Is this Boris’s latest attempt to divert us all from dwelling on the fact that he repeatedly lied to parliament?

Mollygo Thu 14-Apr-22 08:21:59

Volver
I totally agree about shameful.

^I live London/North Kent borders, and these economic migrants, generally young men, coming over the Channel daily, are a big problem.^ *DiamondLily^ Thu 14-Apr-22 08:09:28

It was a "big problem" for Johnson to work with the controls he impossed on all of us for Covid. So he simply broke the law. He is doing that again. And that's okay with you?

No, for what it's worth, due to what was happening on one day of Johnson's parties (my Dad having to die without family being allowed there), I am incandescent with rage at it all.?

But, that still doesn't alter the fact that it's never going to be good to keep people holed up in hotels, for months and years, with no one working out how to provide permanent housing.

They are talking about sending half these males, plus the women and children, to a detention centre in Yorkshire, while they wait for a decision - I don't know what the housing situation is like up there, for those who will be allowed to stay.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:27:46

Another dead cat thrown on the table as well. Gets us off the subject of Johnson’s corruption and law breaking doesnt it?

Kandinsky Thu 14-Apr-22 08:30:44

Great idea.
Anything we do to stop the illegal crossings is fine by me.
We haven’t got the room or money for them. How many coming over every week?
Hundreds.

We cannot sustain a parallel illegal system. "Our compassion may be infinite, but our capacity to help people is not."

Exactly Boris.

volver Thu 14-Apr-22 08:33:21

How on earth do you think this is going to stop the crossings?

I've removed the word "illegal" because they're not illegal.

To stretch my handcart analogy too far - now we know who's pushing it.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:39:54

Where are they going to stay. Camps? Concentration camps?

Probably - we were the first to use such places and coincidently they were also on the same continent.

This has got to be against international law.

DiamondLily Thu 14-Apr-22 08:40:13

The people aren't illegal - but the methods of the crossings are. They are being run by people traffickers, earning a huge amount of money,

They cheerfully put these migrants to sea, not caring whether these boats are seaworthy, or who might drown.?

A few thoughts about this dead cat designed to distracted the media today: UK was instrumental in establishing UN policy on refugees which it now intends to break!
The cost of what is being is immense with minimal return. The money could be used far better in integrating refugees into UK society to help them be economic contributors. UK has a great reputation of significant refugee achievement and contribution in UK - look at our NHS!
There are masses of empty housing in UK in every council area. Councils could house refugees in these homes, give them a grant to help renovate the buildings and help the family integrate into schooling and work - and solve a housing problem! Sadly councils are so underfunded they are unable to think laterally to the problem.
People migration due to war and economy is a problem as long as history! Shipping people to Rwanda will solve nothing - just prove to the international community the UK has really lost the plot! A sensible, costed strategy needs working out with our international neighbours to address the base problems of refugees!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:43:25

So a question was asked this morning, but not answered by the government minister.

What if the young man managing to get to our beaches, was an interpreter working for the British in Afghanistan?

JaneJudge Thu 14-Apr-22 08:46:27

I think the biggest problem is the price of housing and the fact housing is seen as a way to make profit, rather than them just being homes sad

JaneJudge Thu 14-Apr-22 08:47:57

and the whole idea of sending people to developing countries is abhorrent. What next? sending those who require social care to Rwanda too?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:50:48

A guide to current events. Ukraine is a country at war used by Boris Johnson as a backdrop for dramatic visits and an excuse not to resign when found to have broken the law. Rwanda is a country in Africa being used by Patel to mount a distraction from Johnson lies and lawbreaking.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:53:47

Cost?

£100000 per forced repatriation.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 08:54:36

I will now bury the dead cat and return to how useless Johnson is.

Caleo Thu 14-Apr-22 08:58:23

Allsorts, re your post, you are right to look at facts squarely, and there is undoubtedly poverty among people who are already citizens of this country, and likely to get worse.

It's not an easy option but is is the right option to accept genuine refugees until we are at capacity. Only then will there be equality among peoples of the world.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Apr-22 09:03:32

Unsurprisingly I agree with the decision. Better weather is coming & the rubber dinghies will be out in force this summer. The present system is no deterrent. We’ve paid France millions to little effect. Stop paying the French. Give that money to finance the Army planes to process the migrants (mostly men, funny that) in Rwanda. They’ve all got smartphones. They’ll tell their mates not to bother coming over. Why pay a people smuggler to end up where you don’t want to be? I think this WILL work.

Apparently it’s costing the UK taxpayer millions every week to house them in hotels in Kent & surrounding areas, feed them, provide medical support and give them £39 a week each ‘pocket money’.

Most of the public are fed up seeing these crossings every day. UK Border Force provide a taxi service. Get them back to the airports where it’s a ridiculous situation.

This is no dead cat. It’s been 9 months in the planning, making it legally watertight so that the lefty lawyers can’t find a loophole. No wonder they’re all up in arms and the various charities! Their Ceo’s and staff derive a good living from the immigration roundabout. Pritti Patel is signing the documents in Rwanda right now. This will be very popular with most of the voting public. Just not on GN (natch).

Labour criticise it. What is their solution though? They just say ‘it’s very expensive and won’t work’. Hmm. Let’s see what the waiting migrants in France think of it eh?

Mollygo Thu 14-Apr-22 09:04:41

As for what they do with them, there is an hotel on the main road near where we are staying which is being used to house immigrants -no idea if they’re legal or not.
The inmates have to leave the hotel around 9am and seem to spend the rest of the day walking up and down the road in big groups. Anyone have any info on what is being done to help them?

volver Thu 14-Apr-22 09:05:25

My prediction - it won't happen.

They are getting close to the end of the parliamentary session and there are lots of amendments to the bill. They also have to get it through the Lords, and so they could run out of time.

Then they will say that they tried to do something about immigration but the toxic wokeflakes prevented them

You heard it here first.

eazybee Thu 14-Apr-22 09:05:57

Alistair Campbell

A busted flush.

You don't really know what "process the migrants" means, do you? Given that, I don't think we'll be trusting your view on migration policy.

Also, Right Wing Bingo.

Maudi Thu 14-Apr-22 09:11:34

It will be a vote winner for Boris if it actually happens. Stop the illegal boat smuggler crossings.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 14-Apr-22 09:13:57

What happens to those folk who we turn down for refugee status in Rwanda?

This is the stuff of nightmares.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Apr-22 09:15:50

So asylum applications will be processed offshore. What are all the Guardianistas here getting so worked up about? The EU’s criticism is we have too many "pull factors". Now we may reduce those and save people from drowning. What's your problem?

Sparklefizz Thu 14-Apr-22 09:17:19
