National treasures. Who would you choose?
Is this Boris’s latest attempt to divert us all from dwelling on the fact that he repeatedly lied to parliament?

You know full well I didn’t mean the migrants volver but the naysayers on here who just refuse to acknowledge this could be a workable solution. A deterrent.
Which naysayers?
conspiacy conspiracy
your you.
Goodnight all.

So many glum buckets and Eeyores on here. “Oh this won’t work/oh we can’t even try it/oh this is just awful”
Yada, yada....
I dare say the proof of this particular pudding will be the eating of it. Hey - I might even want seconds! Who knows?
Not you, not me.
Let’s wait and see eh?
Is this how things "work" in unicorn land?
Realising that asylum seekers are human beings too and actually reading reliable reports with sources rather than parroting headlines which confirm your opinions isn't being a glum bucket - it's being an adult human being.
Equally Urmstongran you just refuse to acknowledge this could be a particularly cruel way to treat our fellow man. There are many better alternatives mentioned on this thread.
Have a heart, please.

And that, dear UG is a problem caused by the government which is either corrupt or incompetent or both.
Urmstongran
So the refusal rate of asylum seekers is now a mere 28%. Why? It must take months, even years, to do a proper background check on someone from Ethiopea or Vietnam with no papers, and there are 10s of 1000s of them. The former DG of Border Force, Tony Smith, said on GBNews that thousands apply for asylum in several EU countries, and are refused each time, so they end up in Calais with a 72% chance of getting in.
Not bad odds.
Mr Smith needs to get his facts right before he spouts off on national TV.
In 2020, the UK granted asylum to 48% of applicants, compared with the EU's 41%.

... and the installation of fact filters in some people.
Mr Smith was Interim DG of Border Force for 7 months, in the early 2010s.
Guess they found somebody better for the job.

And it was on GB news
The Archbishop of Canterbury will use his Easter Sunday sermon to condemn Boris Johnson’s Rwanda scheme. The policy, he’ll say, cannot “stand the judgment of God”. Utterly damning from the most senior Anglican in the UK.
Perhaps a better starting point would be if our dear government worked with other governments to smash the criminal gangs and root out the people smugglers and money launderers who live openly in the U.K. But that might not be good for tory party funds.
I suppose the Australian model did work in that the 'boat people' stopped trying to enter via those means. Is that not what the proposed new UK model aims for? Interesting that other countries are trying it too.
Other countries tried it and have been told it is inhuman. That it. No ifs or buts. There's no defending it.
Lots of things "work" but that doesn't mean we should copy them.
This is illegal Johnson and cronies know it’s illegal but what better way to win over the Little Englanders than to have their plot turned down then he and she ….Patel can be the heroes
who tried but were beaten by the ‘woke’ brigade For woke read anyone who has an iota of care and heart and compassion
GSM we aren’t a ‘soft touch’ do you know the conditions many refugees here live in for years, detention centres that aren’t fit for purpose
How do you know they don’t speak English, have no qualifications, and don’t want to work or does that just fit your argument neatly? I d swop them for an English person who is ‘too good’ to work in the fields, or to get up early or work long hours oh yes let’s do a swap I bet I could find you plenty but they d need to make sure they have their x boxes and beer and drugs as companions before they swop over
If the UK is such a "soft touch", how come many more people apply to Germany, France and Spain than the UK? Incidentally, the acceptance rate in those three countries is approximately the same as the UK.
Look at it another way- we are a small country with a good standard of living and a big heart.
We do a lot for international aid / international disasters/ wars. We don’t have unlimited space or resources to keep taking in 1000’s each week who come in illegally on the very dangerous boats.
Maybe this will stop some of the channel crossings? Nothing else seems to have worked.
Unless you have a heart of stone you must surely feel pity for people taking such risks, but several questions are often left unanswered by those who say this country is 'doing the wrong thing. '
The migrants are coming from France. Why? They are safe there, and have also travelled through several 'safe' countries.
What is to happen when they get here? I do not believe we have so much empty council housing (I have worked in local authority housing departments) and an earlier poster has spoken of the crowded tower blocks etc.
It is easy to talk the talk, but when it comes down to the practicalities, how can we honestly absorb 1,000 people a day without this small island becoming an intolerable place where people are struggling even more to find a home, a doctor, and a school place? I shall duck down behind the parapet now while I am called an ignorant unfeeling racist, but we do need some answers to those questions.
I'm not going to get angry any more.
I'm just going to be really sad about the "we're a small country, we're doing lots already, illegal arrivals" stuff.
I'm going to put it down to lack of understanding, and fear. Can't think it's anything else, or I'd go mad.
but we do need some answers to those questions.
They've been answered several times on this thread alone. You've obviously not bothered to read it.
You won’t get the answers here Rosina. Those are some of the unpalatable truths which those who insist we are a rich country with plenty of room will ignore.
