Is this Boris’s latest attempt to divert us all from dwelling on the fact that he repeatedly lied to parliament?

Urmstongran's article is from 2014. It's eight years old.

Got any actual, current figures?

Urmstongran Mon 18-Apr-22 10:57:26

Well the problem hasn’t gone away and the situation is worsening. I could Google it I suppose. Maybe later... we’re off out.

JaneJudge Mon 18-Apr-22 10:57:56

Maybe she'd been on the phone to her cousin the whole time

Urmstongran Mon 18-Apr-22 10:59:34

Which illustrates my point Coastpath the UK is a soft touch. Come one, come all. Any number. We don’t send you back. In fact I think we’ve given up. Hence Rwanda as a deterrent.

Who’s she? The cat’s mother?

No no, don't worry. We all know you're far too busy to actually find any real, verifiable and relevant facts.

Coastpath Mon 18-Apr-22 11:05:00

It doesn't illustrate your point at all Urmstongran Have you read any of the news, data or posts above detailing the number of refugees other countries accept compared to the UK. We are well down the list.

Being kind does not make you a soft touch.

We need workers.

But you know all this.

There is a rescued Romanian puppy next door to us, getting free handouts and accommodation.

Send him back I say!!

??? Thank you?

I believe France accepts far more refugees p.a. than the UK. Not quite sure why the British government makes such a big deal about them.

It really doesn't.

I wonder if you can tell me how many refugees there are in the UK? What exactly are the numbers that worry you so much Urmstongran?

I think most of us do know why the British government makes such a big deal about them. These stories distract a certain demographic from the fact that this Johnson administration is breaking the law, that we have a liar in charge, that life is going to get an awful lot worse for a lot of people in this country, but hey if they can convince people that everything is the fault of a few hundred desperate young men with brown skin...

Not so much refugees as it turns out. The majority on here hate some of us saying ‘economic migrants’ but quite honestly I didn’t realise until this morning that many of these dinghy desperadoes have had their applications for asylum turned down by France. So not fleeing persecution then. Who knew?

Fleeing France Urmstongran and who can blame them as we are such a soft touch here putting them up in 4 star hotels whats not to like. Might cost them £3000 for the trip but nice holiday by the sea awaits them here it seems.

Britons are turned away as mini-breaks are cancelled at hotels for migrants: SUE REID examines how Government spends £5million a day block-booking rooms as row rages over deal to send them to Rwanda

JaneJudge Mon 18-Apr-22 17:21:06

There is a hotel near me being used to house refugees or homeless. It was bought by the local authority and has secure rooms that are served by shared kitchen and lounge facilities and no alcohol is allowed on site. It appears to work well but I do feel sorry for the children having to play in the car park. Hopefully they don't stay there long.

It also doesn't sound like the kind of hotel where "disappointed Brits" would go for a weekend break. Unless they are the type who think that prisons are a holiday camp
There is one near me too, bloody middle of nowhere and next to a petrol station on a major road, must be a very depressing place to spend all day every day with little money

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Apr-22 18:01:26

GillT57 although I disagree with almost everything else maudi posts (sorry, maudi) this did in fact happen to a group we were invited to join last year. The week before their long-planned, long-booked reunion was due to take place, their booking was cancelled by the hotel because the Government block-booked it for refugees. It sounds as if the Government requisitioned it.
We weren't going anyway but a couple of friends were.
I think they managed to find another hotel.

It wasn't a 2* star dive in the middle of nowhere btw as I can't imagine the group booking somewhere like that.

But this weekend, the Holiday Inn in Maidenhead, Berkshire, was closed to tourists, outraging Britons who were hoping to stay there. It is now the home of migrants who have sailed across the Channel after paying traffickers thousands of pounds a head for the 21-mile journey.
Visitors rave about the spa and the swimming pool plus the fact that it’s a short hop to Windsor Castle, Ascot racecourse and the moorings of river Thames pleasure boats.(copied from Daily Mail today)

Fair enough Callistemon, very disappointing. Presumably the owners of these hotels are being very amply rewarded.

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Apr-22 18:32:32

Gill

The one I mentioned was a Mercure Hotel - not The Ritz but at £160 pppn not cheap and the photos of the rooms, the pool, the gym don't look at all depressing.
The group weren't told of the cancellation of their 75 rooms until they phoned to check final details the week before. They were lucky to find somewhere else at the last minute and to find a restaurant elsewhere to take them all.

So yes, it does happen.

ps I haven't read the Daily Mail

Yes, I presume so and perhaps they felt they couldn't refuse as the headlines would have been detrimental!

I presume the original group got their deposits back.

Maundi, we may know how many France accepts, but how do you know that those coming over here have previously applied in France and then been refused? Could you quote your source?

No one would 'hate' what you say if you explain your source and back your statements with facts. I doubt they actually 'hate' your posts anyway.

I'm still waiting for Urmstongran to tell us how many refugees there are in the UK? Perhaps you know.
