This smacks of Nazism and the Madagascar Plan.
One wonders why and how Rwanda had been chosen:
Already densely populated
History of genocide
A mostly rural population
Economy primarily subsistence farming
Little opportunity for economic advancement
Not enough water
Not enough food
Poor sanitation
Low life expectancy
High rate of communicable diseases
Poor record on human rights
You have to be desperate to take the risks these migrants do. Priti Patel thinks that migrants may think twice before crossing the Channel if they think they may end up in Rwanda. Double standards of the most heinous kind. What if the UK had taken this approach when her own family came to the UK from Uganda and became prosperous as a result? What a despicable woman she is.

Sending U.K. refugees to Rawanda
(759 Posts)Is this Boris’s latest attempt to divert us all from dwelling on the fact that he repeatedly lied to parliament?
Rosalyn69
Unpopular opinion I know but we can’t possibly keep on allowing huge numbers of illegal immigrants into the country.
But we are prepared to send them to Rwanda which is a small country and the most densely populated country in sub-Saharan Africa.
Emigrating to better your circumstances is common. How many people took themselves off to America in 20th century from UK seeking a better life? I am guessing that some of our MPs and ministers are the children of people who came here for a better life.
I do not blame these economic migrants, although it is clear that those fleeing war and persecution will be further up the list.
It is the word genuine that troubles me - I am sure that everyone seeking to come to UK has a genuine reason.
But the solution to the debacle in the channel is not to send them off to Rwanda - I cannot begin to imagine how anyone might come up with such a barmy and inhuman scheme.
£120 million could be used to speed up the processing.

We do have a lot of job vacancies so yes, people should be processed more quickly.
One thing about economic migrants is that they will be keen to work. Some may have qualifications from their home countries but I know for a fact that it's not so easy for someone from another country to just walk into a job in the NHS (they may need additional qualifications and language skills) and that's right in some cases.
However, just because someone has good qualifications doesn't mean they won't be willing to take on lower paid jobs in the meantime if given the chance.
Lots of the care staff we employ for my dd's service are trained nurses in Africa. They work in social care here whilst topping up their qualifications to nurse in the NHS at some point. It works very well. At the moment I have two trained nurses, someone who was a healthcare manager so is at university a couple of days a week and one girl (who isn't African but isn't British, who is going into medicine) It works well for us and will work well for others when they are all UK qualified. These are all female economic migrants. I doubt this is is unique to our care service.
The government's minister for refugees said just a week ago there was "no possibility" of removing asylum seekers to Rwanda, it has emerged.
Lord Harrington's comments came just seven days before Boris Johnson announces plans to send refugees seeking asylum to an offshore processing centre in the landlocked African country.
Asked on 5 of April whether he could justify such ameasure, the Home Office minister said he was not aware of any such plan.
"We haven't sent any refugees to Rwanda... is that a rumour?" he said when asked about the possibility of the policy during an appearance on LBC Radio.
When it was put to Lord Harrington that the policy might be applied to people crossing the Channel on small boats, he said: "If it's happening in the Home Office on the same corridor that I'm in, they haven't told me about it. But we're having difficulty enough getting them from Ukraine to our country – there's no possibility of sending them to Rwanda."

Callistemon21 has just answered your question GSM
It is the history of all time that economic migrants will take any work and then work their way up via hard work and education - sometimes across generations. If people are poor, disenchanted by the system, unable to work and have no occupation then things go wrong and I guess that's what you witness in your town.
You must admit that if these guys could work it would solve many of our country's current problems.
Unpopular opinion I know but we can’t possibly keep on allowing huge numbers of illegal immigrants into the country.
While there are some awful dehumanising comments on this thread it's such a relief to see the support shown other human beings
The lack of humanity shown by a few on this thread is breathtaking in its callousness.
I’m in full agreement with Urms and Maudi. There’s a huge difference between refugees and economic migrants and a great many of the young men arriving here via the Channel (*6000 yesterday*) are the latter with no family in the UK. If they have no trade or profession and don’t speak English how are they going to fill the jobs spoken of upthread? In my nearest city we have gangs of them, chucked out of the hostel for the day, intimidating people and shoplifting. Are those the actions of people who would be an asset to our society?
I hope this policy goes ahead and vastly reduces the influx of economic migrants as word gets back that they will be sent to Rwanda. It’s not a fascist policy. These people are not UK citizens, do not have permission to be here and are not being sent to the gas chambers. Let’s concentrate on genuine refugees, not economic migrants seeking benefits.

My issue is with the fit young men who have tried to jump the queue
We desperately need workers here in the UK. If we processed people here faster and fairly then we would be able to add to our workforce and all these new, young, fit people could be adding to our economy, working in our social care system and hospitals, qualifying as teachers, picking our veg and fruit and perhaps be joining our armed services.
This is one of the most unkind things I have seen any government do in my lifetime. It looks like a dead cat.
I think the Rwanda idea is wrong.
I don’t claim any expertise for any of these questions.
Perhaps some GN expertise could be sent to whichever government is in power to help them answer these questions.
Fill in the answers and I’ll guarantee to send it to all major political parties.
If it’s so easy to stop illegal immigrants, why hasn’t it been done?
Process them more quickly -good idea.
Where should it happen?
Why does this not happen?
Where do the processed people go?
What happens to them? (Apart from those I’ve seen walking up and down?)
What happens to those classified as illegal immigrants now?
How do we identify them?
How do we deport them? If they don’t have a passport, where do we send them?
How do we stop the traffickers? They aren’t going to give up their source of income politely, so what do we do?
The government haven’t got it right. Agreed!
No other party has come up with viable suggestions so unless they’re saving their ideas till they get into power, which is immoral, it’s likely that they haven’t got anything better.
Now might be a good time for GN to help.
Mahdi, where is the evidence to support your post or the statement ‘they are not innocent victims’
A proportion of these young men will be ‘economic migrants’. Many will be the person chosen by their family to make the perilous journey from some war torn country, with the aim of getting asylum and applying for family to join them.
What happened to humanity
Maudi
They are not innocent victims no one is forcing these economic migrants to pay money to a people smuggling gang to cross the Channel on a dinghy its their choice.
Are you willing to support a fascist policy?

Hwever, I still don't understand why Rwanda
They are not innocent victims no one is forcing these economic migrants to pay money to a people smuggling gang to cross the Channel on a dinghy its their choice.
Maudi
I'm all for genuine refugees like the ones from the Ukraine I welcome them with open arms, mostly women and children and older people, their young men are staying to fight and protect their country, I salute them. My issue is with the fit young men who have tried to jump the queue by paying a people smuggling gang to come here, they are not genuine asylum seekers but economic migrants trying to beat the system. I hope this scheme if it actually takes off will finally stop the smuggler gangs when people see their is no point on risking your life crossing the Channel on a dingy. A vote winner for Boris I think.
So you are willing to follow a fascist policy by inflicting dreadful trauma and god knows what else on innocent victims in order to get at the smugglers?
I'm a bit confused about people not wanting economic migrants in the country. You know there is a list of jobs that have shortages that allow people to have fast track work visas to enter the country? It includes things like working for the NHS and social work jobs. What do you think would happen if these people did not apply for visas to do these jobs?
Masses of empty council housing??? Seriously? Then how come it's a ten year waiting list where I live? You cannot get a GP appointment for love nor money and someone I know has just got an appointment for a consultant, two years away. I feel very sorry for genuine refugees, the Afghan people who helped us and who we owe and of course we need to help Ukrainian people. How we do all this is another story. I really do not know what the answer is as the world and UK is in one awful state.
Remember the Hutu and Tutsi genocide.
Yes
They couldn’t have chosen a worse country if they tried
It's just astonishing.
What are they thinking of? Whose idea was it?

If anyone feels very strongly then house a family, although it may be cramped it's better than turning them away and you will genuinely be able to say, I feel bad about what's happening and this is my contribution
It's not that easy. My neighbour told me yesterday that they put their names down to welcome refugees from Ukraine to their home but are getting nowhere with the process.
I’m upset about this too. I know that as the weather improves more migrants will cross the channel and the situation will become so very serious. Many people have criticised the government, rightly so, for not trying to deal with it. I sincerely hope that those critics aren’t happy with this “solution”. I wish someone could come up with a fair, humane and acceptable idea. Criticism is such a waste of time.
£120 million to Rwanda - why not spend this money on speedy processing to distinguish genuine refugees from economic migrants? That is not to say that I do not have sympathy with economic migrants - who can blame people for wanting to better their standard of living/education?
It is getting seriously embarrassing to be British.
