We seem to have neglected actual war news from Ukraine for a while, though thanks to twitter and an excellent series of mumsnet threads I'm keeping up, more or less.

The good news is, that, from last night, the flagship of the Russian in the Black Sea is conducting a special operation from the bottom of said sea. Apparently Ukraine has very effectively used long range anti ship missiles which seem to have been newly acquired.

This means that Russia will be highly unlikely to attempt to attack Odessa from the sea, which will make Ukranian defence of the port much easier.

It's also a humiliation for Russia, which actually announced that the ship was 'on fire', apparently an unusual move in this 'special operation'.

Will it further dent Putin's image as a 'strong' leader and make regime change more likely?

Will it provoke him to further atrocities?

Also being said is that two thirds of the money supposed to be for maintaining Russia's navy has disappeared into private pockets. The same was said earlier about the army's supply and maintenance budget.

My question was actually a rhetorical one. I also think that the residents who are left and the armed forces who are in Mariupol will either all, or mainly die. They will starve to death in the underground cellars and catacombs, or they will be murdered and dumped in a mass grave. It’s too awful to contemplate. My heart feels like breaking when I think of this.

Callistemon21 Fri 22-Apr-22 23:01:26

What will happen to the remaining residents and armed forces?
I heard on one news programme that many are underground and he plans to block them in where they will die.

Just barbaric and still he lies and calls it "liberation".
It's mass murder. The man is demented.

The remaining military are determined to stay till the bitter end maddyone
How much longer can the world watch the Ukrainians begging for more weapons?
Germany says it hasnt enough to protect its self, so it wont be sending any from now on.
I think they will provide financial assistance still though.

Boris was in India, trying to pursued them to stop sitting on the fence maybe?
I know they are going to buy the Russian oil that Europe wont be, and they already buy Russian arms.
You may be right mokryna

It is so very sad for the Ukrainians and Ukraine.
If Europe doesn’t do something for a counter attack other counties will be invaded.

I’m feeling so saddened by these events. This morning I watched the report on Mariupol and the whole city is devastated. Apparently about twenty thousand of it’s residents are dead. And now Putin says his troops must make a ring of steel that even a a fly can’t penetrate. What will happen to the remaining residents and armed forces?

According to Sky News President Putin is threatening to use nuclear missiles if Sweden and Finland join NATO…

No, he’s not threatening to use nuclear missiles - he’s threatening to deploy hypersonic and nuclear missile systems in Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave - between Poland and Lithuania. This would effectively end any thought of a nuclear free Baltic, as Russia has said it needs to ‘restore the balance’ and keep NATO away from its’ borders. It’s intended to intimidate Finland and Sweden into abandoning ideas of joining NATO as they would then have to live with nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles close to home as a result.

This was sorted at the beginning of this thread?

Thanks MaizieD interesting

Link to the latest mumsnet thread started on Saturday.

I'd suggest going straight to the last page and then going back 3 or 4 to get the latest info they're sharing.

It looks as though the Ukraine Army is doing well with cutting supply chains.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4531511-ukraine-invasion-part-21

Just random things I've seen ⬇

There is some chatter about the Russian army being under strength and Ukraine hampering the build up of forces for a Russian offensive in the south; rumours of forces refusing to fight.

And, irony, it is rumoured that the packages of looted goods which Russian soldiers have been sending off to their families have been stolen by Russian postal workers...

Please accept my kindest thoughts as well grannyactivist

nadateturbe Mon 18-Apr-22 10:10:36

So sorry Grannyactivist. flowers

I'm going to avoid the news for a while, have had two really anxious nights sleep with bad dreams.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 18-Apr-22 10:00:09

grannyactivist (((hugs))) condolences on the loss of your son-in-law.

We were one of the lucky ones, our son came home, but those who returned will never forget those who did not, please take what little comfort you can in that ???

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Apr-22 09:52:25

I am worried about the next month. I so hope Putin doesn’t achieve his ambition.

This is the ship that was sunk. Even more impressive when you see it.

DH ex RN Warfare Officer , says Russian Ship tend to be top heavy, this was an old ship, she has been around since the 1980 's.
Russia says she was on fire, unless the crew filled her with too much water she shouldn't have sunk, (per DH)

We will find out as there was USA spy plane flying over the area (seen on flight radar)

This sinking has probably escalated the Russian attack, far more worrying for those poor Ukraine people.

It was a 43 year old cruiser - ironically built in Ukraine in the days of the Soviet occupation.
Launched in 1979 so, yes, it was an old ship.

I am still impressed by what the Ukraine forces managed to achieve. I'm not sure why being "old" matters. It seems to have been the pride of the Russian fleet. That, of course, asks questions about that fleet but not about the achievement in taking out the flagship of the Russian Navy.

Yammy Mon 18-Apr-22 09:22:37

Two British soldiers captured or who had to surrender to the Russians are on social media. No one knows anything about where he is or the state he is in, not even his wife. It seems he might be being used for Russian propaganda.
They will not be the only two poor things. Not a happy Easter for them.

I’m sad to say I have been unable to keep up with the news from Ukraine. ?

I’ve been having some really awful nightmares, so I’m afraid all the news is being filtered through my husband at the moment. I haven’t even read this whole thread in case there’s something disturbing that will either set me off crying or give me bad dreams. Next month it will be 12 years since my son-in-law was killed in Afghanistan and I can’t really cope with war news at the moment.

nadateturbe Sun 17-Apr-22 23:09:18

I've just sobbed watching the news. Those poor innocent children. And young men and women fighting for their country. Alone.
Heartbreaking.
While we all go to our comfortable beds.
Putin will have to be stopped sooner or later.

mokryna Sun 17-Apr-22 18:31:00

How long are these promised weapons going to take to get to the heroic people in the south?

maddyone Sat 16-Apr-22 11:24:55

Yes Whitewave, you’re absolutely right. I have the feeling that this latest war will go on for a while. I hope not, dear God I hope not. We find it hard, but we know how much harder for them. It’s being unable to do anything except donate that’s difficult too.

This morning I had to turn off the news. It’s the first time I’ve done it because I feel compelled to keep up with it normally. Turning it off seems so disrespectful somehow. But the sheer heartbreak of bereaved citizens of Ukraine this morning, I just had to turn it off. I’m really not turning the other cheek, but not watching feels like I am.

I find so much is now making me tearful.

Tbh we have had such a bellyful over the past few years I think that it is beginning to be more difficult to cope.

A company supporting Putin

“Dyson - the Conservative party donor technology company - has reiterated its support once again for Putin’s regime by refusing, not just to stop trading with Russia, but also to keep all its customer sales and support business going in Moscow.”
