We seem to have neglected actual war news from Ukraine for a while, though thanks to twitter and an excellent series of mumsnet threads I'm keeping up, more or less.

The good news is, that, from last night, the flagship of the Russian in the Black Sea is conducting a special operation from the bottom of said sea. Apparently Ukraine has very effectively used long range anti ship missiles which seem to have been newly acquired.

This means that Russia will be highly unlikely to attempt to attack Odessa from the sea, which will make Ukranian defence of the port much easier.

It's also a humiliation for Russia, which actually announced that the ship was 'on fire', apparently an unusual move in this 'special operation'.

Will it further dent Putin's image as a 'strong' leader and make regime change more likely?

Will it provoke him to further atrocities?

Also being said is that two thirds of the money supposed to be for maintaining Russia's navy has disappeared into private pockets. The same was said earlier about the army's supply and maintenance budget.

This is the ship that was sunk. Even more impressive when you see it.

DH ex RN Warfare Officer , says Russian Ship tend to be top heavy, this was an old ship, she has been around since the 1980 's.
Russia says she was on fire, unless the crew filled her with too much water she shouldn't have sunk, (per DH)

We will find out as there was USA spy plane flying over the area (seen on flight radar)

This sinking has probably escalated the Russian attack, far more worrying for those poor Ukraine people.

It was a 43 year old cruiser - ironically built in Ukraine in the days of the Soviet occupation.
Launched in 1979 so, yes, it was an old ship.

There are some very powerful images on the internet of women in Tallin outside of the Russian Embassy, protesting against the brutal rape and torture of Ukrainian women and children.

They have bags over their heads, their hands are bound behind their backs their lower garments are removed apart from some wearing pants, they all have red dye running down their legs.

They were so quiet and standing with dignity something that was an option for the victims in Ukraine.

What a powerful sight that must have been GG13.

Thank you for understanding Namsnanny and flowers for you too. The celebration of new life and renewed life at Easter seems so hollow in the present circumstances doesn’t it?

For those of you who want to keep up I can really recommend the mumsnet threads. They're on thread no. 20 now! Lots of up to date information and intelligent discussion.

I linked to the latest in the OP. It's currently on p.29.

I saw that this had happened on the news earlier today, and I believe it is very good news Maizie so thank you for starting a new thread about it. I find myself drawn to news programmes at the moment in order to follow the latest developments in Ukraine. It’s not good for me as sometimes I become quite upset about it, but I feel compelled to keep up with it.

....^I'm compelled to keep up^
I feel the same way. flowers
As if it's the least I can do.
The press have begun to turn the attention to other things now.
I feel disloyal(?) if I dont at least keep abreast of events.

Thank you for beginning another thread MaiseD

The Forces expert (I'm sure he has a more impressive title) on Sky said the Ukraine forces may have fired four missiles but only two hits. His explanation for the fire on board is that one may have hit one of the tubes on deck - presumably, they are armed.

He also commented that only 100 of 500 crew have been accounted for, by the Russians, to the rest of the world. That may not mean anything, of course. They may just be regrouping and not wanting to put out information.

eazybee me too. Underling male traits will out. Civilisation seems to be a very thin insulation layer in war times.

What haunts me and I can't get it out of my head, are the reports of the rapes, mutilation and murder of women.
Nothing has changed since the Fall of Troy.

Sorry GG13, I certainly didn't intend to imply you were stupid.

The press will use all manner of misleading headlines to generate clicks and draw in the audience.

I’ve just gone back and read the thread thoroughly, having added my comment quickly when I saw the thread. It’s not good news that many Russian sailors have drowned, assuming that’s true. Loss of life is never good news. However I’m still pleased that the Ukrainians have managed to render the ship unusable, probably sunk.
War is so cruel. I’m so very saddened by this conflict with all its horrors.

Moscow has said it will be forced to strengthen its defences in the Baltic if Finland and Sweden join Nato, including by deploying nuclear weapons, as the war in Ukraine entered its seventh week.

I hope they let them join immediately. Russian troups diverted to strengthen defences in the Baltic will then be spread even more thinly in Ukraine.

It's also not as if we expect Putin to hold back on nuclear if he loses the plot completely, so no change there.

MaizieD Thu 14-Apr-22 14:08:19

He's been threatening this for practically the whole of the war special operation.

He could give the order but actually carrying it out depends on a number of people who might not be too keen to see their country destroyed and their families die in the inevitable retaliation. That's what MAD is all about.

I was very worried about it earlier, but not so much now. I think that the most he would do is deploy some along the borders.

Also, one wonders how far corruption in the forces supply and maintenance chain has reached. Why bother with the upkeep of weaponry which has been tacitly acknowledged (MAD) to be unlikely ever to be used?

According to Sky News President Putin is threatening to use nuclear missiles if Sweden and Finland join NATO…

mokryna Thu 14-Apr-22 13:35:12

I think the Turkish sailors were very brave to rescue the Russians in high seas, as there were Russian laid mines to navigate. I hope the Turkish sailors are able to talk to the people they saved.
