Johnson’s trip to India
Apparently telling the press on the plane that he hopes to offer visas to Indians. The intention is to fill all the vacancies left by the Europeans.
Can’t see that going down well in the red wall seats. Immigration appears to be a major issue in those areas.
I am wondering what he will throw on the table next?
He has to do something to get the focus away from himself once again. I would have thought that he is running out of options, although Brexit hadn’t been brought up for months and months, in fact he appears to have forgotten it entirely.
Whatever he says, nothing will come of it of course. Nothing he announces ever does get completed, because he is no good at detail, and the work that is involved in good governance.
Brexit still isn’t “done” so perhaps that will be next weeks dead cat.
Michael Gove has been quiet lately …..
The photos from India look like he’s on some kind of royal visit. Why isn’t he dressing up? I agree the gigs up when Tory MPs stop backing him. This idea that he’s doing a great job with Ukraine -he’s signed off on sending them missiles- does anyone believe no other person in the whole of the U.K. could do better? I think of the current crop of talentless Tories I would go for Ben Wallace.
Excellent post, which has nailed the issue Dickens.

You haven't annoyed me Urmstongran. Saddened me perhaps. It's not about Carrie. It's not about the cake. It's about the assumption rules don't apply if you are Johnson and it's about the lies, upon lies, upon lies to us and to Parliament.
It's not about Carrie. It's not about the cake. It's about the assumption rules don't apply if you are Johnson and it's about the lies, upon lies, upon lies to us and to Parliament.
This is the point, isn't it?
As his former Eton Classics Master said in a report to Johnson's father, Stanley, "he thinks he should be free of the 'network of obligation that binds everyone", and further condemned him for being "affronted when criticised for what amounts to a gross failure of responsibility"
... and that's exactly it... that's how he behaves still when he's being held to account - how dare we have the effrontery, why should we criticise him....
He has no sense of 'the other', of other people. He is the true Ayn Rand hero - she admired people who felt no obligation to consider anyone else, or anything else but self-interest.
Yes, the misdemeanour is small beer in comparison to Ukraine - but that's not the point is it? It's the way he's lied, tried to baffle and confound.... his complete and utter lack of integrity.
"He's apologised" say his supporters. Well of course he has... now - because he's been caught out and has no option other than to apologise.
We deserve better than this. I'm beginning not to care who replaces him, as long as the person who does has a modicum of integrity and honesty. If you cannot have faith in, nor trust, your PM, because he continually lies, then democracy just becomes a joke. And maybe to Johnson, it is. He has no respect for it.

I do agree the wheels on Boris’ bus do seem to be coming off. I bet Carrie rues the day she ordered that surprise birthday cake, delivered to his office in a Tupperware, between back-to-back meetings. Said cake allegedly remained in the container.
I’m not sure Boris will survive this. I imagine the Tory party will wait to see which way the wind blows after the council elections on 5th May. I bet possible contenders for the top post are being discussed now at the very highest level.
These are very strange times. After a few good days of people discussing the issues, it seems we are once again back to gossip about personalities. What a shame.
You’ve lost me. What gossip? What have I said to annoy you now?
varian
Would that be the bus with the £350 million lie on the side?

the imaginary bus, you silly people
The police aren't going to issue any more penalties until after 5 May. More delays.

But the fact is the culture in Downing Street at the time meant that Johnson’s wife thought it was perfectly acceptable to do that when the rest of the country wasn’t. The rest of us knew we shouldn’t behave in that way because the PM himself told us so.

If I hear about Partygate mentioned again I will scream. ?
Boris did wrong, apologised, now I want him to be able to concentrate on stopping that tyrant Putin.
At this moment the War in Ukraine is the most important event IMO. Please let Boris deal with that.
I see Johnson is in India with his mate Lord Bamford, one of the Tories’ biggest donors, to publicise Bamford’s company after his bulldozers were used to flatten Muslim settlements in Delhi - the legality of which is under investigation by India’s supreme court.
The campaign group Amnesty India tweeted: “In the backdrop of Municipal Corporation of Delhi using JCB bulldozers to raze down shops of Muslims in north-west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri yesterday, UK prime minister’s inauguration of a JCB factory in Gujarat is not only ignorant but his silence on the incident is deafening.”
Just to remind people that In January 2019, Johnson, while a backbencher, received a £10,000 donation from the firm three days before giving a speech at its headquarters praising its business acumen.
Apart from explaining why this PR exercise is in poor taste, please say how this is "Boris dealing with Ukraine"?
I'm also interested to know how Johnson hopes to persuade PM Modi to stop buying oil and arms with Russia when his own political party is awash with Russian money?
Why does this make me think of the Johnson government selling arms to Saudi to bomb Yemen and then giving aid to Yemen?

“honesty, integrity and telling the truth matter in our politics".
They sure do, Sir Keir. Remind me how many Labour MPs promised that they would honour the result of the EU Referendum ...... and then reneged on it?
???As I said earlier Casdon “upholding democracy”?
Really?
Explain to me what relevance you believe that has to do with Boris lying and breaking the law Urmstongran? Labour are not in power, and MPs are at liberty to voice their opinions and that of their constituents about Brexit. Public opinion is changing as I’m sure you’re aware.
www.statista.com/statistics/987347/brexit-opinion-poll/
There was no obligation for anyone to 'uphold' the result of an advisory referendum.
Particularly when the government subsequently admitted that, because of the cheating and illegal funding of the leave campaigns, it would have been declared void had the result been mandatory.
I am curious to know how many out of the Labour MPs in 2016 actually said they would 'uphold the result'. Do tell us, Ug. you clearly have a crib from somewhere...

Scream away if you must NanKate, but it won’t help. He’s yesterday’s man. Nothing is more important to the future of this country than upholding democracy, and the new PM will be competent to deal with Ukraine, without lying in parliament or to the public.
oligarchs
It might not be "Boris" dealing with it if he had not been propelled into Downing Street by Brexit backer Vladimir Putin and the generous funding of his poligarchs to the Conservative Party.

I wanted Brexit done.
Boris (cast your minds back folk) was the ONLY politician promising to get it over the line and deliver it.
On the whole I don’t much care now whether he stays or not. If he goes I hope a Remain voter doesn’t step into his shoes.
What will be, will be.
I’ve been impressed on the big issues with Boris. Sourcing out vaccine procurement to Kate Bingham (not NHS England) was stellar. He’s doing a grand job on the world stage with Ukraine.
But if the Tory party come against him heavily, fair enough. Not my circus not my monkeys.
My thoughts exactly. If Boris goes I hope we get a general election. It is clear the British public voted Boris in to 'get Brexit done' - unfortunately the Tories got in with him. Boris goes, they should all go and we start with a fresh government for post-Brexit Britain.
Has Brexit been done? It may have been officially, but as some would say, it’s an utter Horlicks! Just an instance- a local, very popular restaurant, is closing. The two chefs can barely get any staff. They have to do any number of shifts and barely see their children. Their work/life balance is hopeless. So that’s it. I know several other pubs and restaurants in this area which have reduced their hours and even reduced their menus. Johnson has allowed our country to become a dismal 1950s backwater. He should be ashamed.
