That’s it really, just Edward and Sophie are on tour. I saw that a planned visit to Grenada has been pulled.

Chosen by the British electorate, as were Thatcher, Cameron,
Johnson

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-Apr-22 12:33:17

But whoever it was would have been chosen by the British electorate, not imposed by accident of birth and vast privilege, and mediocrity.

If we decide they are useless we can get rid of them, not wait for their death.

Or a comedian.

A president will be a politician

volver Mon 25-Apr-22 12:23:43

Or somebody like Zelenskyy might get elected.

MayBee70 Mon 25-Apr-22 12:21:40

It just worries me that if we had a president someone like Farage might get elected. I can’t explain why but I’ve got a real soft spot for the royals. I know it goes against all my political beliefs!

No I do agree but I can see my children seeing the U.K. being made a republic.

I always remember talking to a young French boy who said the difference between a French person and a British person was that the British were subjects with all the connotations whereas the French are citizens. That was years ago but I think he was right.

It is time that we stood as citizens and not subjects.

maddyone Mon 25-Apr-22 12:08:14

Totally agree with you Gill. I would hope we would become a republic Whitewave
but I’m not sure if will be in my lifetime.

I recommend that you read the letter sent to Sophie and Edward Windsor by the Antigua and Barbuda reparations support committee.

That tells me that the arcane institute of the RF really is dead as far as so much of the commonwealth peoples and I suspect will soon be finished in the U.K.

well, hopefully when the Queen dies (not that I wish her any ill, but she is 96), I think/hope that there will be some changes to the old guard at the palace, the old retainers who are stuck in the 1950s and think that everyone wants to come out and wave flags at the royals. The last tour by the Cambridges was excruciating for all, and as umpteenth in line, I can't imagine anyone getting excited about a visit by the Wessex.

Namsnanny Mon 25-Apr-22 11:36:09

You'd look lovely in it Joseanne I'm sure. Especially if you put a different belt with it ?(Oops, should be on the style forum!blush)

I guess family members are carrying out the Queen's wishes to revisit every country when there is a Jubilee year. I think she and DofE did the rounds for the diamond Jubilee in 2012, but I can't see it continuing in 2032 for several reasons.

They go because some out of touch department decrees they do, they are not relevant now.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 24-Apr-22 14:00:39

So that’s where I got it? I noted their contribution to my DNA result. B******s.

volver Sun 24-Apr-22 13:44:05

I had to google that!

nanna8 Sun 24-Apr-22 13:37:41

Dupuytren contraction? Many of us got that from our Viking ancestors.

volver Sun 24-Apr-22 13:12:59

I didn't mean you specifically MayBee70.

But we should listen to what they are asking for. And maybe it won't be possible to give them what they are asking for. But saying that we don't hate the Vikings is minimising their issues.

None of us are currently affected by anything the Vikings did that is making our current lives worse. Many people around the world today are living with the after effects of slavery.

MayBee70 Sun 24-Apr-22 13:07:28

I’m not minimising their issues. I just don’t know what we can do other than learn from it.

The Romans and Vikings made slaves of us but I don’t hate them for it. And the royal family were rich and privileged even before America and the West Indies were discovered. Surely what’s important is that we learn from history because we can’t change it. I don’t actually know what we’re expected to do.

As far as I know, there are no Scandinavians who are still reaping the rewards of slavery from a millennium ago. Far less Romans.

As for what we're expected to do? We could listen to what the people actually affected are asking for, and we could stop minimising their issues.

She gave Forfar to Edward because it's up the road from where her mum and sister were born.

It all makes sense, really. confused

maddyone Sun 24-Apr-22 12:32:43

The Queen believes in all these titles. That’s why she gives titles as gifts to her family when they marry. She wanted to give Princess Anne’s first husband a title when they married but they refused it. She has given many titles as gifts to her family. The Queen and royal family perpetuate this hierarchical system.

Earl and Countess? What rubbish in this day and age. Pass the sick bag …..
