That’s it really, just Edward and Sophie are on tour. I saw that a planned visit to Grenada has been pulled.

Amid a global reckoning over the history of slavery, one institution has remained silent: the British monarchy. slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/07/british-royal-family-slavery-reparations.html?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=traffic&utm_source=article&utm_content=twitter_share… via

Slavery reparations campaigner ‘disappointed’ at royal Grenada trip cancellation

The Romans and Vikings made slaves of us but I don’t hate them for it. And the royal family were rich and privileged even before America and the West Indies were discovered. Surely what’s important is that we learn from history because we can’t change it. I don’t actually know what we’re expected to do.

I may have this wrong but I think that the senior working members of the RF are going to visit every Country in the Commonwealth during The Queens Jubilee year.

why are they going to the caribbean ?
didn't the other two go there recently.
if they have to go on tour, why isn't it to somewhere less visited ?
seems a bad use of resources, human and logistic.
and p.r.

Royal tours should be stopped. They serve no purpose.

Grany Sat 23-Apr-22 17:14:31

But still this tour same responses

Wow. Damning letter, responding to what's been dubbed the 'goodwill-don't-leave-us' tour:

"We know that the British Crown - both as royal family and as institution, is historically documented as an active participant in the largest crimes against humanity of all time."

Full text of the open letter sent to Edward and Sophie from the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission:
“…..We know however that everyone in your family continues to live in the splendour, pomp and wealth attained through the proceeds of the crimes….”

I don’t understand why they are going to the Caribbean so soon after William and Kate.

They are visiting different Islands

Ninanana Sat 23-Apr-22 16:39:39

It's still quite chilly here.

Harry was not born Duke of Sussex , he was given the title when he married, Megan could not have the title Princess
Megan, same as Diana couldn’t have the title Princess Diana

What’s wrong with H trading on his title? It’s his title- he didn’t have to do anything to get it other than be born, same as the rest of the family. None of them should have a title imo, it’s all just anachronistic fluff. I doubt if anyone in those islands has a clue who Edward and Sophie are.

Only the fact that he said he wouldnt

The RF lacks wisdom in every department now it seems. Maybe Harry had the right idea after all?

Harry and the word Wisdom don't belong in the same paragraph. Bless him. grin

I am a royalist but these foreign tours should be a thing of the past.

I've never really understood the usefulness of the Commonwealth. Some one posted up thread that Prince Charles may well change things when it's his turn.
In truth, if they are an invited guest then the host should pay for their visit.
If it's on behalf of the UK then I imagine the tax payer pays.
Paying for Royalty to visit goes way back to before the middle ages.

maddyone Sat 23-Apr-22 13:38:50

I don’t know why the Queen has thought the Commonwealth is so important. Does anyone else know? These tours still smack of colonialism which in my opinion makes them distasteful.

So much for saving the planet.

Only if he stops trading on his title

Parsley3 Sat 23-Apr-22 13:10:49

I think that the importance of the Commonwealth to the monarchy will disappear when Charles takes the throne. The Queen has given it prominence in all her speeches and so has kept the idea that it is a good thing afloat. Times will change.

I do wonder why the younger Royals want to make the tour to the Caribbean. It has been well documented that many of the West Indian Islands that were governed by the British colonialism have /wanted to take back their own Islands affairs.
Was it Barbados that recently done that and no longer come under the British rule of our monarchy.
When William and Kate had their tour they had to miss out two of the places they were due to visit because of demonstrations and now Edward and Sophie are touring and they have been advised to miss out Grenada.
It seems the general thinking that the promoting of colonialism is offensive to some and British Royals no longer
have the status in these places they once had.
I think in future times the visiting of Royalty will not be wanted in the Caribbean and those sort of tours should be scaled back.

Who pays for these tours?
Are they self funded?

I notice these tours are never to anywhere grotty and cold.

The country they go to pays RF pays for nothing just take take take.

Yes, they’re in the Caribbean. I don’t know which other islands they’re visiting.
