Poor Boris ?. Nothing's ever his fault.

HousePlantQueen Thu 05-May-22 14:55:40

The only 'Elsie' I know is actually Laura Claire....LC. Sorry, as you were.

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 14:25:31

Okay smile I’ve pmed you ?

Callistemon21 Thu 05-May-22 14:20:31

Sorry!
It's been a busy and rather odd morning.

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 14:19:10

No Callistemon I didn’t think that she was ‘ancient’, at all, I said thought she was around 70
I do hope I’m not being accused of being ‘ageist’.
I’d better tell DH.

I think that I need to apologise. I didn’t actually see Elsie - I only heard about it all on the radio.
I assumed that she was around 70 years old.
(And you know what assume did…?)

Ancient then! ???

I'll let my 78 year old auntie know that her middle name is just non-U any more.
On the contrary, volver, she may be thrilled to know it's very fashionable again now.

My school friend's mother was Elsie but she insisted on being known as Elise.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 05-May-22 11:59:59

We have an Elsie in our family, she is at primary school, so not particularly ancient…

growstuff Thu 05-May-22 11:58:15

Is working for the Conservative Party - and hence an activist - also considered derogatory?

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 11:51:31

volver

Quite.

Do you always have to have the last word! wink

No grin

volver Thu 05-May-22 11:50:23

We know nothing of Elsie's politics. Unless someone has anything that shows otherwise?

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 11:50:14

I know Elsie’s real, however even she had just been planted and used to illustrate the position hundreds of thousands of older people will find themselves in, it showed the PM up for what he is - that is the material point.

Dinahmo Thu 05-May-22 11:47:19

It's strange that so many people think that if someone lives in a big house they shouldn't support the LP. Tens of thousands of people who live comfortable lives support the LP or other left leaning parties, the reason being that they care about those less fortunate than themselves and want to try to improve their lives.

volver Thu 05-May-22 11:46:25

Quite.

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 11:45:12

No. No, it’s evident I haven’t given it (or Elsie) as much thought as you have

volver Thu 05-May-22 11:42:01

Fanny, this has got nothing to do with "disliking" the PM. It's to do with the press and the political commentators who try to undermine the "opposition" (I don't mean Labour) and suggest that everybody is out to get poor old Boris.

I doubt that the Good Morning Production team are perfect, but can you imagine how Elsie is feeling? People saying she's not real, people saying she's a "plant", people saying she's a liar, people saying she should move?

I just think people, should consider what they are saying about a real, live person!

Here's Elsie.

www.ageuk.org.uk/westminster/about-us/news/news-articles/2022/the-impact-of-befriending/#

This is the original page before Guido Fawkes got their hands on it and decided to "edit" it to support their lying.

I'll let my 78 year old auntie know that her middle name is just non-U any more.

There is a concerted effort by right wing commentators to pretend Elsie isn't real. Don't facilitate them by believing the lies. C'est tout.

What's wrong with being an activist for Age UK? It's hardly the Revolutionary Workers' Party of North Korea! And Elsie doesn't look like much of a danger to society! hmm

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 11:35:56

volver I’m a member of the Labour Party.

It wouldn’t surprise me if I disliked Johnson even more than you.

I’m was doubting the practices of the Good Morning production team - nothing else.

You don’t half polarise stuff sometimes.

I’ve said nothing to merit your ‘disbelief’!

I don’t think I’ll comment further on this thread.

volver Thu 05-May-22 11:29:40

Well ignore the non-U bit. I just got into the house and couldn't believe what I was reading. Make it "old fashioned and probably made up" instead.

It never occurred to me that Elsie was made up. They had video of her during the interview, and after. Then rumours start to try to undermine her and the story, and people who haven't watched the interview come up with comments along the lines of "I imagine it was all made up for effect".

That bolsters the comments from last night about being a Labour activist and how she shouldn't be complaining if she lives in a big house. It's all to do with undermining the story and taking the heat off our poor, beleaguered Prime Minister. angry

FannyCornforth Thu 05-May-22 11:24:17

Thank you volver

But I don’t understand your comment about names.
Non U means ‘not upper class’

I thought that it was clear that I was generalising.

I’m not ‘believing any lies ‘;
I was sharing my own thoughts

I had my qualms about Elsie.
Her name seems all too perfect for a fictional hard done by older person (about two or three decades ago).

I can’t imagine that there are too many Elsies about now.
Far more likely to be a Pat, Wendy, Alison, Sue etc

I just look it up out of curiosity, there were at least 1000 babies named Elsie born every year until 1950, so there must be lots of them around still. Callistemon21 you’re right though, it’s more popular now for babies than it’s been since then, with about 1000 every year for the last few years.
