Let's face it, with HM's apparent mobility problems, and the amount of walking involved, even as there is a lift that she used last year, it was quite certain that she wouldn't be able to attend.
Watching it now, Prince Charles is doing a fine job of reading out the government's statement.
Nice to see Prince William involved as well.

This was my point - I think she should do it but use a wheelchair. It's not a sign of weakness, of giving in. It's simply practical.

I think they have the situation in hand. If the Queen is physically unwell for a long period necessitating her absence then she could allow Charles to become the Regent. As George IV became was when his father George III was too ill to reign. I think people are being a bit impatient. Standing roles might not be acceptable at this time, and she did have covid. She perhaps is suffering from long covid..or hip problems? They don't release details. She is mentally fit. (unlike George 3rd). It is not a job, it is a cradle to the grave role. She is not one to abdicate.

DH and I have just been discussing this, actually. There are actually very few constitutional duties for our monarch, but delivering the Queen's Speech is one of them. If she can't do it, then why is she persisting in the post?

Well I support the Queen and think she's done a wonderful job over all the years. I really don't like the way this post is going and some of the nasty comment about her. Shameful.

I think it is very sad that people seem to want to abolish the monarchy, they are castigated at every turn and before you all say we pay for them, they have given back much more . I for one am proud to have them .

But I do think that if the Pope can retire, then the British monarch can.
(I’ve said that previously, and someone disagreed, saying that HM was far more important than the Pope)

It does appear that the time for her to retire is now.
The Queen is dealing with things which are extremely predictable, if not inevitable; and there doesn’t seem to have been much forethought going on.

HM has only become so frail since the death of the D of E. I'm sure there is a plan, depending on how exactly she fares.
I for one am happy to see the monarchy continue albeit in a form more fitting to modern times. I'm sure HM understands the need to modernise.

I don't think anyone's saying she can't retire Fanny but it's her decision and no one else's.

As I understand it, The Queen cannot retire entirely in any formal sense as there is no constitution means for her make the choice to do so another than abdication. This would, in effect a renunciation or abandonment of her duties.

Whatever one's view of the monarchy, the Queen has served loyally for almost 70 years in a role that she was not born to do and would arguably not have had to do but for her uncle's abdication and the controversy which still reverberates around that. I doubt very much that she would ever abdicate.

I don’t suppose for one moment that there aren’t discussions going about the future of the monarchy, in terms of accession if nothing else. Prince Charles is already an old man and may not feel physically able to assume all the responsiblities of the position.

My thoughts too. The AGEISM on this thread by 'Grans' is despicable. The self-loathing of older ladies is putrid. We women are widely discarded and invisible and unwanted as we get older and we now believe the disgusting narrative? What happened to valuing the wisdom of the years? What happened to love and respect for our Queen? Many of you disgust me.

He is reading it with authority and dispassionately as befits The Crown. It is not an audition for X Factor.

Perhaps Prince Charles does not want the Queen to stand down just yet. Appointing him Regent after the Jubilee might be the most diplomatic and practical solution.

I agree fanny. If God's representative on earth had the sense to retire when he felt he could no longer do the job then so can the Queen.
She's done her job over all these years time to sit back and relax or are the family such a handful a load of men bickering all the time that she feels she still needs to keep them in check?
Monarchs in other countries do it so why can't ours.

I don't love the Queen. I've never met the woman, but I'm sure she is very dutiful. Maybe she is wise as well, who knows? We don't get to hear her opinion on anything, do we? Allowing the illegal propagation of Parliament in 2019 wasn't very "wise". And she was the only one who could stop it. And she didn't.

What I find "putrid" is the blind devotion, and the belief that anybody who questions the status quo is a woman hating anarchist, or something.

Prince Charles performed the role beautifully this morning.

As I have previously said (am I the only one repeating myself? I doubt it!) it’s time for her to put up the royal feet in front of the racing, with a packet of custard creams.

I agree that the Queen should now stand down - can’t understand why she can’t use an electric scooter as this would be good to raise the issue of disability image. It’s time we decreased the pomp and e Penske of Royalty and Parliament

When she was a child ppl worked until their last breath and yes I believe that is what she believes she has to do. But I know she doesn’t want to use a mobility scooter because she doesn’t want us to see her that way. But I think we all have to except in life we all need help in some way. But I fear she isn’t long for this earth and it will be a very sad day when she goes. and I think they will struggle to survive I know I watch queen royal weddings etc but my sons and daughter inlaws etc don’t. Younger generation don’t see them like we do.
