Who votes these ar**s in?

A Tory MP has been widely condemned after suggesting people use food banks because “generation after generation” of people in the UK cannot cook or budget properly.

Ashfield MP Lee Anderson told the House of Commons there wasn't a “massive use” for food banks in this country.

Why are we are third in the obese table if according to some they hardly have any money to eat. I've never seen so many obese people young and old and I travel all over the UK and don't tell me they can only afford junk food.

He looks well fed too. I’d like to see his menus for the week.

Anyway, is this the mp who was in trouble for facebook posts about someone's "knockers" or something?

The one and the same:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/29/tory-caught-staging-doorstep-chat-is-odious-sexist-says-anna-soubry

In Crick's video, a lady accuses him of being a misogynist, which is why he was reprimanded by the Labour Party. Anderson accused the woman of being a member of Momentum, which wasn't true. Anna Soubry then complained to Brendon Lewis about his sexist "knockers" comment. Nice man! hmm

Lastly (thank god!)
If I followed the advice given on here I would need to go to a food bank next week.

As it is, I'm expecting to be able to last a month due to my stock cupboard and ability to use a bit of brain power.

And here endeth the first lesson...

Budgeting isn't about buying the biggest stock of wonky veg.
It's about stretching what you have, what's available, what is good value and fairly nutritious, and being in inventive enough to make a passable meal out of it.

MissAdventure Wed 11-May-22 23:27:23

Lentils rely on a decent stock of things to add to them, and as marvelously cheap as porridge is, sometimes there just isnt any milk or sweetener/sugar/fruit.

MissAdventure Wed 11-May-22 23:24:10

A lot of what is said on these threads is pretty bad advice, in terms of budgeting.
In fact, frozen and tinned veg are better for you than shop bought stuff that is leaching out the vitamins each day.
A sack of potatoes isn't a good buy if you end up not eating them all - which is often the case.
Batch cooking is useless without the means to freeze what's cooked.
Not everybody has a car to bulk buy a big shop, wasting money o bus fares is false economy sometimes, when money is very tight.

With everything people expect to be taught in school, I'm surprised they have time for maths and English lessons. ?

Were they ever?
Lots here from all walks of life have said they made cakes, and set out tea trays.

But they'd have made excellent parlour maids in the "big house". hmm

growstuff Wed 11-May-22 23:18:46

Why aren't children taught to cook and budget at school.

Because they have other things to learn.

Because most of them will forget what they've learnt by the time they need the skills.

Because there's no one way to budget.

I'm shocked and surprised at Lee Anderson. He was always well thought of and helpful when he represented the Ashfield district .Obviously since he went over to the Conservatives he has forgotten where he came from . Why aren't children taught to cook and budget at school.

volver Wed 11-May-22 23:11:48

I heard Anderson on The World Tonight a little while ago. He's really not the sharpest tool in the box, is he? Anyone who comes to "his" foodbank is obliged to sign up for a budgeting course and a cooking course. B*****y cheek of him.

Granmarderby10 Wed 11-May-22 23:09:39

Yes, when it boils down to it, all my problems stem from my failure to be wealthy.

I don't know why some are so focused on phones.
It's not even as if they're expensive these days.

My having a mobile has meant I have been able to earn a living for the last 4 ish years.

Or is that "wrong" somehow?

Perhaps we should go back to the days of queuing up to use phone boxes and putting in 4d to make a call as I had to when I was young.

Mobiles are essential now and landlines will be phased out before long. Communication these days is vital for many reasons.

DaisyAnne Wed 11-May-22 22:49:19

No MissAdventure, it's not wrong. It's just there is a lot of ignorance around, sadly. And of course, the MSM plays to this and their readers repeat the propaganda lies back as if they are God-given truths.

MissA we deliver in those situations , but, sorry we can't guarantee that the deliverer will praise your eyes....disappointing I know.

Galaxy Wed 11-May-22 22:13:29

My mobile phone is cheaper than my landline. What is the weirdness about mobile phones? I have just applied for a new job, without a phone and a laptop I would have been seriously disadvantaged compared to other applicants.

MissAdventure Wed 11-May-22 22:12:07

I'm not well enough to get to one these days, except by taxi.
Imagine the furore? smile

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 11-May-22 22:09:56

MissA I enjoy the company of the people at foodbank- volunteers and clients. No folk who matter would view a foodbank user differently from a volunteer.
You might find your nearest one quite good fun . One of my clients told me on Monday, that I had beautiful eyes- in Italian! You don't that in the supermarke queue.

MissAdventure Wed 11-May-22 21:52:33

At least some people have the good grace to realise there are angles they have never considered.

As I've said, I have been offered refferal to a food bank, but I wouldn't even consider it, now that I know how people view the folk who visit them.

Plus, I don't actually need to use one, because I am excellent on a budget - contrary to how some would view me.

It's just that I quietly get on with doing all the things that others feel the need to trumpet about.

It's patronising, to say the least.

It feels pretty uncomfortable to say these things, but I figure why not?
Nobody else holds back on singing their own praises.

growstuff Wed 11-May-22 21:43:53

I find it increasingly hard to stomach them, too.

Having read your "diary", I'm not surprised you feel like that. I've been there too, so I know how it feels. You don't even have to have experienced it to give people credit for knowing more about poverty than these dismissive posts do. It's obvious that those who pontificate haven't a clue and couldn't care less about finding out.

Dickens Wed 11-May-22 21:36:36

This blaming the poor for their problem has been the get out of so many selfish centred people since time began. Read Dickens, his books are full of such people. Scrooge in A Christmas Carol is a classic example.

Dickens had an understanding of how the poor lived that most of his class knew nothing about. He often undertook evening walks venturing into some of the most deprived areas of London and saw the foul, grinding poverty first hand. That's why he wrote about it so well. And was often criticised for it because people just didn't believe such poverty existed.

History repeats itself.
