Before I head off into our garden for BBQ with DD & GC I have a serious question for the political experts here.

As I have turned away from Mr. Johnson and the current Conservative Government am I now a Champagne Socialist ?

I must be mad- I have just agreed to hand out how to vote cards at our election on Sat. Helping a friend out but I’ll be voting a different way to the ones I will be handing out.

Durif for me. Especially as we head into Winter here.

WWM2- spot on ! And your wine choice is good, too - Chapel Down is an award winning Kent vineyard.

So my ideal government is

One presiding over a capitalist economy

One that supports a strong democracy.

One that is strong enough to control the exploitation of resources by this system, which is inevitable in the pursuit of profit, underpinned by a rule of law.

One that provides a rule of law, with an independent judiciary, to which the entire population have access

One that provides a safety net for all the casualties that inevitably arise from the economic system in its normal pattern of peaks and troughs, or for health reasons.

A fair tax system used to generate a society that does not have extremes of inequality.

A government that recognises the right of access to a good available to all health system.

The right to a good tertiary education in all its forms.

The right to housing

That’s a start. ?

Maybe!?

Dom.

Perhaps the Don was more interesting than the drink smile

Have you had a bottle of sparkling rosé already ???

Cheers ?

I should only do one thing at a time, gg. And remember to flipping proof read.

And I agree with your last post.

I am partial to Laurent Perrier rose, but for special occasions it has always been Dom Perignon. If out to lunch with girlfriends it can be Prosecco or Cava, some are better than others.

We are trying English sparkling, will look into your recommendation Whitewavemark2

That should be Camel Valley btw. We always have their stuff for special occasions.

Also if you are feeling flush have a look at Chaple Down they have some couer de cuvee that sounds good. I haven’t tried it as it is expensive but if it is ok be nice for a very special occasion.
Kent vineyard I think.

I’d call myself a gin and tonic middle-of-the-road. That’s in the summer though - in winter it might well be an Amontillado sherry.

Mamie Sun 15-May-22 08:12:19

Don't take that the wrong way. Just an observation based on umpty tiddle years of virtual acquaintanceship. ?

Mamie Sun 15-May-22 08:03:09

That is interesting Baggs. I have always thought of you as a libertarian, right from the beginning of Gransnet. ?

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:31:43

Yeah, well, anyway. Universal safety net – absoultely.

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:31:07

Universal credit?

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:30:49

UC?

Sorry, been out for the day with work colleagues and am now pretty brain dead (tired). It was LOVELY in Oban. So normal. I heard several foreign languages, it was busy and the weather was FAB. So good to see Scotland open again.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 14-May-22 21:27:45

I think I am a Libertarian at heart, but I do believe that the safety net of UC should not have more holes than Captain Ahabs net.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 14-May-22 21:24:58

I could vote for you Baggs

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:23:39

Because of lockdown and the latent authoritarianism that has unveiled in so many quarters, I have been surprised to find how much of a libertarian I am at heart. It has been a shock. If I start a party it will be the "Politicians get the hell out of my life Party".

Meanwhile - I got my new specs on Thursday.
So why did I mistake an Australian red for a Villa Maria white, put it in the freezer to chill down to drink this evening?
DH thinks I should go back to the optician's.

My favourite champagne type is Camelford Valley.

I could quaff that very happily, and I’m loyal to my birthplace.

I haven't tried that one

GrannyGravy13 Sat 14-May-22 20:43:14

Just in from the garden, thank you for your replies.

Politics and Government are so rubbish and divisive at the moment I just wanted a thread to unite us ??

I know that there are many disillusioned GN posters at the moment
