Why Diana Ross?

Why is Diana Ross headlining the Platinum Jubilee Party and not a British singer as this is a very British event?

And I also thought it was odd to have Tom Cruise the other evening.

Passé but then so is the monarchy.

On the other hand, maybe like ballet, the monarchy is never passé. It endures forever! grin
Though I do have trouble with the leg turn outs going from front to back.

Same here re Tom Cruise, OP. Can’t stand him!!

mokryna Thu 19-May-22 13:39:51

I also say the same about Tom Cruise popping up on Sunday giving a speech, (he probably doesn’t care that much about our Queen) when the Uk has so many well loved British people give a more heartfelt one.

MissAdventure me too I can’t stand Diana Ross - far too whiny and diva-ish.
Give me Aretha Franklin any day (not possible I know)

Glad to see there is another one like me.
I always feel awful saying I don't enjoy Miss Ross.

Full line up

That's a good line up.
Personally I love classical ballet, though it does seem a bit incongruous along with all those acts.

?

Then she'll dedicate "I'm Still Waiting" to Charles.

Petera Thu 19-May-22 13:24:22

Maybe she'll sing "You can't hurry, love"?

It was an American friend of mine who expressed surprise that in the UK we didn't think we had any suitable singers. She pointed out that in the US they don't have a British singer at the Super Bowl, for instance.

We could have had Ed Sheeran, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jack Savoretti, Elton John to name just a few, even Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey whose voices have held up.

2002 was U2 (Irish) - a tribute to the victims of 9/11
2003 was Shania Twain (Canadian)
2005 was The Rolling Stones (UK)
2006 was Paul McCartney (UK)
2010 was The Who (UK)
2016 was coldplay (UK)
2020 had shakira (Colombian)
2021 had The Weeknd (Canadian)

So, your friend is wrong.

Also, did you know those performers all pay to play at the Super Bowl?

Glorianny Thu 19-May-22 12:02:10

Isn't Sheila Ferguson the one Charles fancied? Maybe Camilla vetoed that one!!

jaylucy Thu 19-May-22 11:54:58

Has she got a new album out or something ?
I will be upset if at the very least , they don't roll out Cliff, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Elton John . I think all of the others that seem to make an appearance have all passed away!
Rather than Miss Ross, Sheila Ferguson from the Three Degrees is still singing well, I believe and what about those many bands from the sixties and seventies that are still performing ? Maybe Bros and Take That could do a one off ?

Sam Ryder! Sam Ryder will play too!

Surely we're all happy about that?

He seems a lovely chap and very appropriate to have him as he virtually won Eurovision. He was only beaten by the war!

Joseanne Thu 19-May-22 11:02:41

My claim to fame ... I just now had a chat with Martin Clunes (about dogs!) But not dorgies!

Kandinsky Thu 19-May-22 09:15:57

(I'd say killing two birds with one stone-but perhaps that's not an expression to be used here!!!)

? ( sorry, I’ve got a terrible sense of humour )

volver Thu 19-May-22 09:11:54

Is this going to turn into a thread about "look how thrifty the RF are with our money"?

Glorianny Thu 19-May-22 09:07:21

Maybe it is just because Glastonbury have booked her so there won't be any travel costs. (I'd say killing two birds with one stone-but perhaps that's not an expression to be used here!!!)

Kandinsky Thu 19-May-22 08:42:42

They just pick a good mix of oldies & younger artists. Plus people who will appeal to an international audience as it’s being broadcast around the world. I’ll watch as it looks like a really good line up.
It’s not a private function purely for the Queen as she hasn’t heard of half of them,
I’m sure she’d rather be watching ‘only fools & horses’ with a cup of tea.

Kalu Thu 19-May-22 08:33:56

The Stones! They have definitely still got it.

I saw them in the 60’s and again in Glasgow in the 80’s. Fabulous.

Dignity? The last jubilee concert had Grace Jones with a hula hoop. shock

How do we know the Queen doesn't like Diana Ross, but she'd like a bit of light classical?

We don’t, obviously. I’m just thinking of the likely tastes of her age group. The only thing I have heard about her musical tastes is that she enjoys military bands, marches etc.

I don’t remember the last jubilee concert, don’t think I saw it.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 19-May-22 08:31:19

Duran Duran, Queen, Adam Lambert, Rod Stewart are also going to be performing.

I will probably have it on in the background, as I rather enjoy Rod Stewart and Adam Lambert has a good voice.

Maybe because she is Supreme and the Queen would identify with that.

Grandma70s Thu 19-May-22 08:14:25

I’d have expected light classical music at a concert like this. Something with a bit of dignity. Who is it for? The Queen, or the public? I shan’t be watching….or at least, I shan’t be listening.
