This ?

We must wait and see.

Russ Jones

I'm hearing 54 letters have been handed in, and a confidence vote in Johnson is likely in early June. Rumour. But solid source.

If so, I suspect Johnson will push for the confidence vote immediately, so it happens before by-elections. And he'll survive. Weak. But survive

Happygirl79 Tue 31-May-22 15:32:55

I pray to God he goes

Whitewavemark2 Tue 31-May-22 15:27:00

Oh I thought I’d read he’d re-instated himself. Obviously wrong.

I do think though that the worse case scenario really for the Tory party is if Johnson wins the vote, as there is nothing at all to suggest that his performance will improve or that he has any form of coherent policy, economic, social or foreign.

I don’t think so WWM2. On 27 May, Bryant tweeted:

I have summoned a meeting of the Commons Privileges Committee for Tuesday 7 June to dispose of its outstanding business, namely a report on the powers of select committees, to follow up our earlier (May 2021) report on which we have been consulting.

That done, a motion to replace me on the Committee with another Labour MP will go before the House, then the Committee will meet again to elect a new chair and start its inquiry into the conduct of the Prime Minister, in which I will take no part as I have recused myself.

I think many of the MP's have been talking to their constituent committees and now have a good idea of how people feel about Boris's behaviour.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 31-May-22 15:13:19

Chris Bryant has reinstated himself I think.

Apparently Johnson is phoning around promising the earth to anyone who will support him.

They must be idiots to believe anything he says.

He may well win the vote of no confidence, but we still have the privileges committee to investigate him. Not that he would resign as is is not a person of honour.

How ever it is looked at he is a lame duck and will never command any respect.

Well if he does escape/win a vote of no confidence, with the 79 majority he can still basically do what he wants until the next GE unless there is a back bench revolt and they begin to vote against his proposals/bills.

He doesn’t care/need anyones respect, just their vote…

OakDryad Tue 31-May-22 15:11:37

Have they even found someone to chair the Committee since Chris Bryant recused himself?

I see Dominic Cummings is talking about the Abba party. Like or loathe him (latter) this had the ring of truth and the Met need only have asked people who were in the building:

It appears that Tory MPs are now acknowledging what many of us have thought for some time - that Johnson is a loose canon and a liability, and if he remained as PM, would likely lose them the next GE. Personally, as others on this thread have said, I’d be prepared to hold my nose and have him stay in order to get the Conservatives out. Give Johnson enough rope, and all that …

Leadsom is criticising him now. Strange though. She’s supported him for the past 7 or so years knowing exactly what sort of person he is and how devoid he is of any loyalty or morality. Might it be that she’s just worried about her own political career? Surely not.

TBF other than MPs who have defied the whip and been expelled they are all culpable.

Leadsom won a huge majority in 2019 election. The council for her constituency did not have a local election this month so nothing to test the mood there.

I doubt she would stand in a leadership contest. I remember her last leadership campaign: from her soppy “I’m a mother” argument; deeply unpleasant racist remarks on her personal blog - hastily removed but not before journos had spotted and published them; her very wealthy family’s offshore tax arrangements and some nasty and idiotic social media posts by her entitled children. This will all come up again including her brother in law Peter de Puton's financial interest in fracking.

All MPs worry about their careers.

I think that those who have sent their letters in are finally reading the room

It’s what so many on GN have been screaming for for the last few years, now there are complaining and questioning why it’s being done…

Mr.Johnson needs to go ASAP

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 12:10:10

That’s absolutely brilliant FarNorth grin

And I agree with you; he has to go ASAP.

I want a Labour government as much as the next person (unless that person is Maiziesmile)
but it’s beyond party politics.
It’s personal now.
He’s out of control…

Well, would you bloomin’ believe it, we need to take back control

FarNorth Tue 31-May-22 12:02:54

This thread needs some light relief

FarNorth Tue 31-May-22 11:14:59

The way it's going MaizieD we shouldn't chance it.

winterwhite Tue 31-May-22 10:53:36

I think we should want MPs, including Theresa May, should do what they know is right, not what they think is expedient.

And let's hope they do it before the Prime Minister unilaterally changes the rules to make it 74 letters.?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 31-May-22 10:35:38

Just saying that no previous Prime Minister has ever sent in a letter if no confidence. If May does it would be massive apparently.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 31-May-22 10:25:50

Ben Wallis is the post popular cabinet member

MaizieD Tue 31-May-22 10:23:20

I think we're in a horrendous mess already, FarNorth Will 2 years make any difference?

Of course, we may have had riots by then...
