It seems that the Home Secretary is willing to send people who having spent their recent lives escaping war are now to find themselves forcibly transported to a country now at war with its neighbour.

What is the matter with Patel?

RichmondPark Mon 13-Jun-22 18:25:53

I don't have a relative getting rich making human rights claims, but I'm sure if I did and wanted to help them I wouldn't be doing so via the medium of posting on Gransnet.

I've always kind of imagined that most human rights lawyers went into it for reasons other than getting rich quick.

Why can we not establish centers to investigate these people while they are in France?

Too obvious a solution biglouis.
Then we could offer support and welcome to refugees that need it and filter out the “rapists and murderers” that so many people seem to think want to come here…

It’s an obvious solution…but seemingly not obvious to our PM and ministers

jumping the queue and getting here by illegal methods

It is not illegal to enter the UK to claim asylum. Under international law, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country.

Have you noticed how some posters when they haven't got an answer just start calling people names, what a sad bunch they are.

Perhaps they have relatives who are getting rich making human right claims for the illegals or perhaps for some warped reason they approve of the smuggler gangs getting rich off the backs of the desperate.

Can’t say. Have noticed that…er “what a sad bunch”

And your second paragraph Is in Prince Charles’ words ..appalling

Surely it is extremely unfair to people trying to enter this country legally and who are spending months if not years in refugee camps waiting to have their applications processed, when they see others jumping the queue and getting here by illegal methods and apparently being able to stay one way or another. How unfair is that?!

Perhaps you would be so kind to outline exactly how asylum seekers are entering the U.K. through safe routes.

Not ok = calling people names
Ok = calling people 'a sad bunch'

That's why I asked the question GrannyGravy13.

Not all leave voters hate refugees but did all refugee haters vote leave?

No idea and unless you know all of the 17 million plus folks who voted leave neither do you.

Good point Richmond - “setting up and staffing proper channels must be cheaper”and it’s more humane.

^Nobody every answers the question - why do we want to deter these people who could if the proper channels were available benefit our economy given the opportunity?^

Why do you think, RichmondPark?.

Why did all the refugee haters vote leave? Same reason for both... it begins with 'xen...

Your sweeping statement is incorrect.

This leave voter is neither xenophobic or racist and definitely not a refugee hater

Bombs have dropped on this country in the past and no one I've ever heard of attempted to cross the Channel in order to escape tbem.

That is probably because the people dropping the bombs were occupying France and bombs were also falling across most of the rest of Europe.

No other country would tolerate these endless appeals. Going forward ‘the vast majority’ will be on those planes as the government will be mindful where the loopholes are. They will select future migrants that align in circumstances with the 11 going tomorrow until that happens.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Jun-22 17:58:13

RichmondPark

Such a small percentage of the number of people originally destined to be on that plane are travelling. The message will be that the vast majority will get through. Do you really think it will work as a deterrent?

Nobody every answers the question - why do we want to deter these people who could if the proper channels were available benefit our economy given the opportunity? Surely setting up proper channels can't be more expensive than the torrent of money being poured into this Rwanda plan.

They simply want to appease the racists, and it is clearly working judging by the comments I’ve seen on social media.

Jaberwok Mon 13-Jun-22 17:58:07

Totally agree with Urstongran and others. If this policy can deter these mostly fit young men and the evil traffickers then it must be a good thing. Bombs have dropped on this country in the past and no one I've ever heard of attempted to cross the Channel in order to escape tbem. If this imaginary bomb were a nuclear one, then escaping wouldn't be an option whichever side of the channel you lived!!

Why can we not establish centers to investigate these people while they are in France?

Because the idea is to "punish" them.

I’m a bit confused as to what has actually happened. Is the plane going tomorrow or is there going to be another appeal? It all sounds very complicated.

The plane is flying tomorrow (allegedly a Privilege Style from Stansted) with 8 refugees on board, unless any more have tickets cancelled in the next 24 hours.

Farzanah Mon 13-Jun-22 17:29:54

Imagine a scenario where a bomb is dropped on the UK. Not widely beyond’s the bounds of possibility at present, and we and ours are fleeing in boats across the Channel only to be met by the French equivalent of Patel?
“No! You are not members of the EU. we do not want you immigrants. Off you go to Rwanda…….
