It seems that the Home Secretary is willing to send people who having spent their recent lives escaping war are now to find themselves forcibly transported to a country now at war with its neighbour.

What is the matter with Patel?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 02-Jun-22 10:35:38

? this
Tens of thousands of Rwandans are being forcibly displaced as a result of war with The Congo and rebels. Rwanda now has a huge refugee problem of its own.

Remember when she said “As the daughter of a migrant, I know the sanctuary, welcome and opportunities that Britain provides. Regaining control of our borders does not mean slamming the door shut.”

She's apparently forgotten.

I can't think of one occasion where this lady has shown any compassion.

Patel’s intention of transporting the first tranche of asylum seekers has been at least delayed and hopefully prevented by judicial query.

If any government ministers, particularly Home Office ministers, give interviews about the Rwanda flight being “stopped by lawyers“ please ask the question: were you advised by your own lawyers that the policy would be unlawful?

Riverwalk Thu 09-Jun-22 10:51:16

It will be a national disgrace if this flight goes ahead - I hope the lawyers can prevent it.

Riverwalk Thu 09-Jun-22 10:53:05

The right wing tabloids will be demonising lawyers and judges again... labelling them enemies of the people.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Jun-22 13:14:02

UN lawyers have told Patel that the plan is entirely illegal.

“ Home Office has spent >£50,000 on PR for its Rwanda immigration plan.

Including £14k+ hiring a comms firm to develop branding and messaging for the policy and tens of thousands on social media ads.”

An obscene waste of money

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Jun-22 18:04:31

I see that the government lied about the UN, when they said that the UN said that the U.K. government was acting legally.

No surprise I suppose.

It’s shocking given not so long ago there were accusations of dreadful atrocities. Why Rwanda anyway. Am I right thinking it has recently joined the Commonwealth? Unusual given that most countries have left, but I may be wrong.

Well she’s got the ok to send the first refugees next week!

Even Prince Charles has complained about it according to The Times online:
“He said he was more than disappointed at the policy,” the source said. “He said he thinks the government’s whole approach is appalling. It was clear he was not impressed with the government’s direction of travel.”

For once, I agree.

NotSpaghetti Fri 10-Jun-22 21:38:29

Ww2 you are right. It’s horrible.

J52 Fri 10-Jun-22 22:01:45

It takes something for Prince Charles to comment about the government! ( if the source is true)
The whole thing is disgraceful and inhumane.

Framilode Fri 10-Jun-22 22:02:00

I don't recognise this country any more. We used to be known for fairness and decency. The whole thing is heartbreaking. I feel ashamed.

DiamondLily Sat 11-Jun-22 04:40:27

Whatever the rights and wrongs, Prince Charles should stay right out of it.

He should take a lesson from his mother - do not involve royalty in government decisions.

As a side issue, has Charles offered up any accommodation to help with all this? ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Jun-22 06:00:58

Whatever happens in the court case, the truth is that looking ahead this crises is going to get a lot worse as the earth heats up and starvation drives human populations to seek shelter.

FannyCornforth Sat 11-Jun-22 06:04:40

Charles has neither confirmed or denied that he called it ‘appalling’.
His people insist that his is ‘politically neutral’.
The Times and The Daily Mail are both claiming the story is
‘exclusive’.

Disgusting disgusting disgusting
Im ashamed of my country
I m overwhelmed with dislike and distrust for Patel
I can’t say any more
This government have totally ruined the country and it won’t recover in my lifetime

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 06:39:29

Re Prince Charles. Not one named source here. Just the word 'appalled' in quotation marks. For all we know, he could have been saying, he was appalled at having to go to Rwanda on (23 June)at a time when the Left have portrayed that country as a backwater.

Just heard this confirmed on BBC news.

DiamondLily Sat 11-Jun-22 07:07:21

Yes, all news channels are confirming it now. He should keep it zipped, or stand for some sort of election.?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Jun-22 07:08:42

Don’t let this detract you from the real and evil issue.

FannyCornforth Sat 11-Jun-22 07:12:53

I’ve heard (radio phone in, so could be bobbins) that the arrangement is reciprocal; in that the UK will be receiving some of Rwanda’s immigrants.
And that it’s nowhere as simple an arrangement as we’re led to believe.
Has anyone heard similar?

Does Rwanda have asylum seekers? I would not have thought so in any large numbers.

FannyCornforth Sat 11-Jun-22 07:18:24

I know! It sounds mad, but the chap sounded very plausible (from what I could hear over the kettle)

I wouldn’t put it past Patel to have made an even bigger balls up of it.
