Sir Anthony Gormley whose mother was German has just applied to become a German citizen and of course an EU citizen. He tells the truth about brexit. It is time more public figures told the truth about this self afflicted disaster.

scrap tariffs on goods coming from outside the EU

The scrapping of all tariffs or trade taxes will from New Zealand's exports of lamb, beef and butter to the UK will almost certainly mean ruin for British farmers. Do we want that for all our industries?

Well I wish those people would speak up on the forum Urmstongran as it would be good to hear differing opinions. Many of us who don't support Brexit find it hard to understand those who do. There is so little evidence that Brexit has any merits it would be wonderful if people who support it could point the merits out to us.

On your "I am baffled by people in this country who still want to be part of the EU. Do they have no self-respect? Or do they have a freakish liking of being disrespected by serial Brit-haters?" I feel more disrespected by our own government who seem to have so little care for the sick, poor and ordinary people of our country than I ever do by Macron et al.

MaizieD you might be surprised at how many p.m’s I receive on my Brexit stance from members who don’t like to get involved by posting, yet fully support what I say on the subject. The silent majority we hear about.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Jul-22 09:33:52

I like how GB News invites people from both sides of any debate, does not interrupt them (that’s a rarity in itself, some other channels just can’t help themselves - I’m looking at you Kay Burley and you Murthy) and then viewers can be impartiality informed.

Re Brexit:
Messieurs Darmanian and Macron - two justifications right there for Brexit. I am baffled by people in this country who still want to be part of the EU. Do they have no self-respect? Or do they have a freakish liking of being disrespected by serial Brit-haters? It’s time the UK stood up to be counted. They keep pushing, we cave. I wonder - is the time coming to invoke Article 16? We have been very patient as a country but eventually if no progress is forthcoming something needs to be done to make headway with Brexit.

Brexit isn’t done. Covid got in the way. It’s been a long drawn out process. Some reports tell us the civil service mandarins are against it and drag their feet or put up obstacles. I don’t know. But I really believe the next 18 months to a GE will see tangible progress. Not before time in my opinion.

I know I’m a lone voice on here but GN and Twitter are not the centres of the universe. Many voters are silently waiting to be properly unshackled from the EU. Some say unless we decouple from the European Court of Human Rights we have little chance. I know Blair had something to do with this. Again, the likes of Suella Braverman will crack on with it now. There’s a momentum building and Brexit WILL be delivered. We’ve been patient long enough. Red tape to be scrapped and scrap tariffs on goods coming from outside the EU will see progress and bring dividends.

Keep trying, Ug

Regarding the European Court of Human Rights:

I watched Farage on GBNews recently where he was talking to a lawyer who was a supporter of the ECHR (and a member of the Tory Party). Can't remember his name unfortunately.

He stopped Farage in his tracks when he pointed out that should a Brit be in prison in say Spain the UK has no jurisdiction or say in what happens to you - you are under the jurisdiction of the Spanish, AND the European Court of Human Rights!

We should all remember that.

Bookings of UK musicians at top EU music festivals hit by brexit Red tape

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-red-tape-musicians-elton-john-b2127653.html

The EU offered accommodations for touring artists during the negotiations of the TCA but the UK turned them down.

The ineptitude of our negotiators and their perverse determination to harm our exporters of goods and services is utterly staggering. But then, we all know the famous saying 'F*ck business*. Well, they certainly did.

Apologies if it’s been mentioned earlier but Steve Bannon is in big trouble in America. This is a man who was instrumental in getting Trump to the White House and brexit. Is there anyone behind brexit that hasn’t been found to be totally corrupt?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 22-Jul-22 08:56:08

Dover has declared a “critical incident” because of the huge delays.

Brexit dividend?

We cannot deny the basic fact that it makes more sense to export to our neighbouring countries rather that places very far away.

There’s a world renowned corvid research programme at Cambridge University that is having to close down because it’s lost it’s EU funding which hasn’t been replaced. They’re hoping to find somewhere in another country to carry on research. I’ll try to find the article. I’ve always been fascinated by how intelligent corvids are but I think the research was more into how they communicate telepathically.

Zonne Sun 03-Jul-22 22:27:23

And, as a direct result of UK’s poisonous position on the NI protocol, we’ve now lost 115 European Research Council scientific grants, and the shared knowledge and benefits that come with them.

And before a Brexiter pops up to claim the UK government will replace the money at least, it won’t:

Huh! I remain convinced that, if in power, Starmer could slide us back into the single market without too many voters really noticing. Under the guise of 'a better Brexit deal'. No good the LP mentioning it now, though. The RW press would have a field day. But it really is the only sensible thing to do

Sneaky. Not sensible. And not very democratic. All those who voted Remain would of course be delighted.

I think that you are fighting a losing battle. I've just been looking at a number of polls and haven't found one where there is a majority in favour of Brexit.

Just read a very interesting article in the New European on Facebook about what has happened to the people behind brexit. Apart from Johnson they have all achieved nothing. One of them tried to get a right wing government in New Zealand but they ( unlike us) had the sense to see through it and voted for Jacinda instead. None of their predictions have come true either. Isn’t the money that Johnson is giving Ukraine partly because they need to be financially viable to join the EU? No one seems to be asking him why Ukraine think it’s so important to join the EU. I wish they would.

Both Brexit and covid have damaged our economy but many analyses have been carried out and all that I have seen have found that Brexit has had an even more devastating impact than covid chestnut not the other way round.

British Businesses are re-locating or opening up branches to Europe in order to survive.

The revenue of course goes to Europe .
