Really....shock in my opinion there are more worthy recipients but right now, can't think of one...

Bea65 Mon 13-Jun-22 10:16:10

Order of the Garter for chivalry...hmm...might as well add Boris later..

maddyone Mon 13-Jun-22 10:21:51

I agree Bea.

Blossoming Mon 13-Jun-22 10:25:38

To my mind the Order of the Garter has already been debased by not removing it from Prince Andrew.

DaisyAnne Mon 13-Jun-22 10:27:03

Has this been withheld from any PM forever? If not, then I imagine it was only a question of how long.

It may well depend on how Johnson leaves and what is discovered after he has gone, that determines when and if he ever gets this.

Casdon Mon 13-Jun-22 10:27:42

I don’t think even his strongest supporter would claim Boris is chivalrous. At least Tony Blair only has one wife and as far as we know hasn’t fathered numerous children before divorcing his previous wives.

Tony Blair and Baroness Amos installed as members of the Order of the Garter just when Johnson is at an all time low.

Prince William selling The Big Issue on the day the government introduces it's right to buy scheme.

Prince Charles comment on Rwanda.

I'm not sure the Tory's can count on the royal vote next time around.

I'm still very annoyed that Bercow didn't get his peerage.

RichmondPark Mon 13-Jun-22 10:50:02

I had a spelling and punctuation nightmare there. Please don't judge me. grin

Wee pretendy titles to make idiots feel important ..then they can act superior to everyone else. The "honours system" is just one big bad joke .When will people open their eyes and see its a mediaeval concept that should have been LEFT in the middle ages .

Well, I’m not.

Dinahmo Mon 13-Jun-22 11:04:59

Well, I am.

Smileless2012 Mon 13-Jun-22 11:17:22

Neither am I Calendargirl.

I’m not making a political or royalist comment here!

The Order of the Garter is not an ordinary Peerage, it is given only at the Monarch’s behest. I think there are only 24 max.
One is the Queen and another Prince Charles ( and of course Andrew)
Tony Blair must have done something right for the Queen to award it. Suggestions are that it was to do with the time of Princess Diana’s death.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Jun-22 11:37:50

Yes almost certainly as a result of the assistance he gave to the Queen at Diana’s death. He helped write the speech she gave amongst other things.

He just has to be patient. It will come.

maddyone Mon 13-Jun-22 11:38:35

I agree with paddyann, no one should get these ridiculous honours. They’re not honourable, they can’t be if Prince Andrew has one. They should be done away with as they are mediaeval as paddyann rightly says.

Blossoming Mon 13-Jun-22 11:46:53

David Cameron is not a ‘sir’.

volver Mon 13-Jun-22 11:52:40

I just looked up the list.

Mary Peters is a Lady of the Garter. I always liked her.

Funny old world.

Just tug your forelock and move on.

Blossoming Mon 13-Jun-22 12:06:09

Who me Volver? I’ve never tugged a forelock in my entire life and I’m too old to start now.

volver Mon 13-Jun-22 12:29:16

Not you Blossoming, sorry. Just a general comment. smile

Do you mean he IS worthy as you can’t think of anyone more worthy ?

Casdon Mon 13-Jun-22 13:25:54

All countries, including republics do have honours systems paddyann54. Not as archaic as in the UK, but those with exceptional achievements are honoured.

volver Mon 13-Jun-22 13:30:31

I like the idea of an honours system, in principle. Not so happy about the orders and memberships of the British Empire, and the fact that the Royal Family are the ones doing the honouring. And as for the hats and jewellery...
