Why did I bother to turn the radio on?

Rail strikes
Teacher strikes
Barristers ‘ (even!) strikes
EasyJet cutting 10% of flights

Apart from the fact I fail to see how people can be able to afford flights by EasyJet or anybody else - what a dreadful summer this is promising to be.

Where do you draw the line regarding rights

The right to strike versus others rights
to get to work, education, legal representation, medical care etc?

I mentioned this on another thread, apologies for repeating myself.

Richard "Partridge" Madeley berated Mick Lynch on GMB this morning and asked him if he was OK with people dying if they couldn't get to their oncology appointment. I paraphrase the reply but basically he said its not the train unions who are killing people, its the policies of the Tory Government that are killing people.

We can't expect any group of workers to take on the responsibility for everybody else and let the government off scot-free. We shouldn't blame people who are standing up for themselves.

I used to be an avid listener to the Today programme on Radio 4 but the milking of certain subjects (eg referendum, Brexit, Covid +++ etc etc) and the appalling level of journalism which just wants to seek out the most emotional response is quite tedious and boring. How many times do we hear the same old same old? Why do they bother interviewing politicians?

However, I do enjoy Any Questions and Any Answers on a (Friday evening) Saturday afternoon. Always good for a laugh when a politician lies through their teeth spouting the party line, and when some naive member of the public says what a good job Johnson is doing.

Do you think that the right to strike should be withdrawn then GrannyGravy?

Farzanah

Do you think that the right to strike should be withdrawn then GrannyGravy?

That is what I have been mulling over

Negotiations are always preferable to strike action, I know that withdrawal of one’s labour is the ultimate power of workers but on the other hand I feel for the millions of people who have had their daily lives disrupted by this strike.

Are you saying that public sector workers should not be allowed by law to strike (or take industrial action?) because of the potential disruption to other people that would cause GrannyGravy13? That sounds like the quickest way to grind the country to a complete halt.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Jun-22 13:45:28

I think I answered this as best I can in my post of 13.40 Casdon

The only industrial action that will force the hand of government to right the below inflation rate pay awards given to the public sector consistently since they have been in power is strikes unfortunately. They are trying to bully the unions, and through that the workers into submission, but the mood is militant at the moment. I stick with my prediction last week, I think we are in for a summer of discontent.

MaizieD Tue 21-Jun-22 14:03:43

Maizie you could be right, but I’m not sure.

Well, the Secret Barrister says that, maddyone, and I'm sure, as they are a criminal law barrister, they know what they're talking about...

What Legal Aid? It doesn't exist anymore. I have three friends and one relative that have not been able to get any aid two for divorces and one for a company dispute. Seems to be the only legal aid you can get now is for serious crimes.

Legal aid is only available for criminal cases. Divorces, and most likely the company dispute, are civil law cases. There is a difference between civil and criminal law.

vegansrock Tue 21-Jun-22 14:13:38

What happened to the “Brexit will give us a high wage economy” line??

Iam64 Tue 21-Jun-22 14:43:03

Legal aid is rare solicitors and barristers are paid a pittance for legal aid in criminal cases. In private law involving divorce and child arrangement orders, legal aid should be available where domestic abuse has happened - should be. Many parents represent themselves. It causes huge delays in a creaking system. Good legal advice and support can reduce stress and improve outcomes.
I support the barristers and the train workers. I expect other groups to take industrial action. I expect the government to do all they can to encourage this because they can use it to feed their anti public service rhetoric

Cheer up!

Turn on the TV and just watch the end of the news. It's the summer solstice on a glorious day ?

I remember stopping at Stonehenge many years ago on 21st June - there were several Druids and just a few other visitors.
It was magical.

nadateturbe Tue 21-Jun-22 15:36:01

We've been to Stonehenge, would love to be there at the summer solstice.

We were at Glastonbury Tor on my birthday (21 June) four years ago. Also quite an experience.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Jun-22 15:45:32

We went to Stonehenge for the summer solstice with the school. When you could get close and touch the stones.

Sorry, Happy Birthday nanateturbe

LauraNorderr Tue 21-Jun-22 19:26:07

Legal aid in Australia is paid for through the Attorney General’s Department. The amount paid to criminal barristers is a pittance. Members of Chambers are committed to pro bono work where funds are unavailable leaving many working for less than an average wage.
When I returned to the U.K. I didn’t even bother to register and took up a far more lucrative career as a PA in the private sector, followed by the purchase of a temping agency and finally doing up outbuildings for holiday rentals giving me a greater income for cleaning a couple of toilets once a week. All that time, effort and money wasted.

LauraNorderr Tue 21-Jun-22 19:28:21

Happy birthday Nadateturbe, what a great day to celebrate a birthday.

LauraNorderr Tue 21-Jun-22 19:30:02

Sorry didn’t finish earlier post. I support barristers strike. They will leave the profession in droves and we’d be lost without their specialist knowledge.

Allsorts Tue 21-Jun-22 19:37:51

It’s getting just like the seventies.

varian Tue 21-Jun-22 20:01:59

At the end of the seventies we had a radical change of government. Surely it must be time for another radical change?

Doodledog Tue 21-Jun-22 20:05:01

I really hope so, varian. It's way overdue.

nadateturbe Tue 21-Jun-22 20:14:54

Agree Varian.
