Our rights are hard won, we should not be giving them up. www.theguardian.com/law/2022/jun/21/uks-new-bill-of-rights-will-curtail-power-of-european-human-rights-court?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
This would be bad enough if those in power were trustworthy.

The human rights act only seems to help the wrongdoers in our country how many criminals are using the act to stay in our country

OK! So how many criminals have used the Act to stay in the UK? What's the answer?

sandelf Thu 23-Jun-22 12:13:41

No - The supremacy the local law is one of the pillars of independence that define a country.

You mean like the Hillsborough families and the victims of sex predator John Worboys? Both groups resorted to using the Human Rights Act.

That's because they are the only cases that get any publicity in the right wing press.

The latest judgement, which prevented the Rwanda deportation flight did not involve a criminal.

It’s very concerning that rights and liberties are being eroded without seemingly most of the population having a clue, understanding, or some even caring.
We won’t wake up one morning and find our democracy has disappeared, it happens gradually, and we are on the pathway.
We don’t learn the lessons of recent history (or perhaps some do!)

Grantanow Thu 23-Jun-22 12:03:44

Disgraceful. Raab is pandering to some real knuckledraggers in and out of the Commons. It's a very similar ploy to playing the racist immigration card. I hope he loses his seat next time. The occasional blocks to deporting criminals that the extreme right scream about are very minor in comparison to the benefits of the ECHR. And some politicians and journalists confuse the public and wind up the Brexiteers by failing to make clear that the Court is NOT based on the EU.

Perhaps we should call it "Klingon". ?

No it doesn’t worry me. We have our own Supreme Court. We will still be part of the European Convention.

Totally agree. We have our own Supreme Court. Why should a European court be allowed to override ours

You mean the "European" Court that we set up, that has UK people sitting in it? The one that prevents our government attacking human right abuses and pretending its legal?

It's the word 'European' that does it, volver. It's a real dog whistle. And look how well it works...

All of them no doubt. After all, the greasy piglet is still in office. No limits to human folly

Everything about this government worries me.

Jackiest Thu 23-Jun-22 07:51:11

I have a lot more trust in the European Court upholding my rights than I have in this lying government.

growstuff Thu 23-Jun-22 03:31:31

I've read through Raab's statement yet again. It's pure propagandist double speak. This Bill of Rights is nothing to do with giving citizens more rights. It's about taking away rights, but will keep the ERG and the UKIP-types happy - until they want even more. A few years ago, I would never have believed my country could have sunk so low. I agree with you Rameses.

Rameses Wed 22-Jun-22 21:45:53

It bothers me as much as does the many other things this so-called 'government' is doing and changing to fit their own agenda.

The ERG have a stranglehold on the parliamentary party and Johnson is nothing but their stooge, either complicitly, or he's too dense to realise he is being used.

We are, in fact, witnessing a very British coup and it is dangerous.

Can’t promote anyone that might be a threat to the ( add your own term for our great leader)….

And to think he might be a contender for Tory leader - God help us.
Apart from his politics, he doesn’t even seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer or even particularly diligent (remember how he was still sunning himself on a beach while Afghanistan was supposed to be evacuated. )
angry

Instead of being reprimanded for this he was made Deputy PM. What a despicable bunch Johnson and his Cabinet are.

I also think that parliament itself needs a complete overhaul. All the filibustering and jeering is an anachronism. It might be pure pantomime but, at times of crisis it’s just a diversion.

I think that all MPs need a lesson on the Separation of Powers and the roles of the Judiciary, the Legislature and the Executive.

They need a history lesson, too. To remind them of why Charles I had his head chopped off...

We need top to bottom constitutional reform.

I suggest all politicians should be excluded from the process and citizens juries should guide the reforms.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Jun-22 16:45:37

Much of the constitution is written. It simply isn’t codified.

We desperately need a written constitution. It would make it much harder to bin the legal protection of human rights, and stop the wrecking of the GFA, or indeed ignore the written constitution between Westminster and the devolved countries.

A written constitution would also pin down the separation of powers,, preventing a rogue government from trashing this vital separation.

I agree. But we don’t want THIS government writing it!

True

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 22-Jun-22 16:16:38

Richmond Park, I agree. Remaining would have given us some protection from the steady erosion of rights inflicted on us by any government with an agenda of its own.
Where do we go from here?
