"Lib Dems win Tiverton and Honiton with swing of nearly 30%
The Liberal Democrats have achieved a stunning swing in taking Tiverton and Honiton from the Conservatives.

Their candidate Richard Foord overturned a Tory majority of more than 24,000 on a swing of nearly 30%.

It's the party's third gain from the Conservatives in just over a year, after victories in Chesham and Amersham and North Shropshire. The Lib Dems now have 14 MPs."

"Labour have won the by-election in Wakefield – taking back a so-called "Red Wall" seat they held for 87 years until it was a Conservative gain at the 2019 general election.

The turnout was 39%.

It’s Labour’s first by-election gain in almost 10 years, when they took Corby from the Conservatives in November 2012.

It takes the total number of Labour MPs in the House of Commons to 200. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s majority in the Commons will fall to 68."

Ironically when he was in Devon the week before he posed on this beach right in front of the cliffs where we get rockfalls and massive landslides.

And a good analogy! ?

Are those more of his children that he mislaid in Devon, Joseanne?

He's full of meaningless soundbites, DaisyAnne, nothing in fact is achieved.

Please, please, don't show me your pecs.

Ewww. That is very close to the idea of Johnson putting his arms around his latest cause, Care Homes, NHS, the poorest in our society, etc. It is so unappealing.

Firstly I cannot think of anything physically worse. Secondly, I would feel Johnson would only put his arms around any group to pick their pocket.

Thank God, he appears to have kept his clothes on, thus far..?

But, he's given us all his thoughts and views on pay rises for public service workers, (but not, obviously, MPs, as they got a big pay rise recently):?

"Boris Johnson warned yesterday that there is ‘no point’ in giving workers bumper pay rises because it would push up prices even further.

Teachers, nurses and doctors have threatened to go on strike unless they are handed double-digit salary hikes.

But the Treasury has told public sector workers they should instead expect rises around the 3 per cent mark.

Asked if teachers, nurses and doctors should only get 3 per cent rises, he told ITV News: ‘At a time when you’ve got inflationary pressures in an economy, there’s no point in having pay rises that just cause further price rises because that just cancels out the benefit.

‘So I know that people will find that frustrating but I’ve got to be realistic with people about where we are.

‘I think – I’m pretty certain of this – that our inflationary pressures will abate over time and things will start to get better.’

Mr Johnson added: ‘We’ve got to make sure that we’re taking the sensible and responsible decisions to have the strongest possible economic recovery.’"

"I want to deliver as much as I can for the British people"
How lovely, how thoughtful.

Well obviously he had to be in Rwanda. It was CHOGM. One of the things he has to take responsibility for is going to CHOGM. But he could still have visited Tiverton and Honiton, and Wakefield, last week.

Well done Boris for being in Rwanda for the Commonwealth meet up with Prince Charles. An important venue. Networking. Soft power and all that.

Shame he had to fly and apparently went swimming after a sinus op, when he would have been given instructions that both were off limits.

Both were probably safer for him than travelling to Tiverton or Wakefield.

growstuff Sun 26-Jun-22 21:17:17

Actually, from something the Tiverton and Honiton Conservative candidate said, I suspect Johnson might have been told that his appearance might not have helped her campaign.

Wasn’t he in hospital for a planned procedure?
Sinuses ... apparently (cough, cough).

And Johnson didn't visit any of them...

Yes, it was strange he didn't visit Tiverton as he was only 30 minutes away at the family farmhouse on Exmoor a week earlier.

I’d guess there are very few constituencies where it’s not a direct choice between Tory and either Labour or Lib Dem. That bodes well.

^we're voting Lib Dem next election cos we're in a tory safe seat and want to get him out^
It didn't work here.
Not sure about next time with all that's happened since then.

Apart from once, I've always voted LibDem anyway because their policies are the closest match to what I would like. It doesn't matter anyway because the Conservatives have such a huge majority, but I'd vote Labour if I thought they had a fighting chance.

It isn’t about ‘bringing Boris down’. Many of us believe 12 years of Tory misrule is destroying our public services. Johnson’s credibility and history of lying just adds to the horror
PR?

PR won't happen before the next GE, so voters have to grit their teeth and vote for the candidate they think will best be able to achieve what they want (which it would appear to be to send the Conservatives a message they want change).

Urmstongran Sun 26-Jun-22 20:56:05

It was telling however that Labour high command didn’t visit Tiverton & Honiton! Did Ed Davey visit Wakefield? Not sure. Bet not...

varian Sun 26-Jun-22 20:47:02

In both the recent by-elections there were Labour and LibDem candidates . No one "stood asise "

The voters chose to back the candidate most likely to beat the Tories.

Says something doesn’t it about Labour and the Lib Dem’s when, in an effort to bring Boris down, they have to field candidates? I’d be miffed if I were say a Labour voter (or a Labour MP let’s not forget!) in a constituency and I had to ‘stand aside’ to let in a Lib Dem ‘for the common good’.

I do wonder if, in reality, the voting public will be entirely happy with this cosy arrangement?

What do you think?

Yes, I think they will be very happy indeed if it keeps the Tories out at the next election. As a Labour supporter living in an area where it’s a choice between a Tory or Lib Dem MP I’m used to it.

I lost respect for them in the Clegg years and also with that woman who wouldn't let her party support Corbyn as a temporary prime minister Jo Swinson, cos thats what gave us the hard Brexit we have. She lost her seat. Anyway, I'm happy that they're through that now & I like the informal pact with labour to get rid of tories, we're voting Lib Dem next election cos we're in a tory safe seat and want to get him out
