Was Boris Johnson bullied into resigning?

I was chatting with a friend at the weekend and she suddenly said - "They were horrible to him".
Suddenly, we hadn't been discussing the subject.
I was so puzzled, said I didn't want to talk about it. We could have fallen out.
Explains why he still has so much support in the country.

The reason Boris stood by Dominic Cummings, Owen Patterson. Chris Pincher et al had nothing to do with loyalty, everything to do with him not thinking that anything they did was particularly heinous, in the same way he appointed Chris Pincher, knowing his reputation.

Boris has no sense of honour and integrity and saw no reason why others lacking both, or who even behaved in ways that, at best, bordered on legality, should need to resign.

I'd like to know in what way anyone thinks that Johnson was "bullied"?

From his past history, it doesn't look like he's ever been intimidated by anyone. He just continues in his own, bullish, way, doing whatever he sees fit, and ignoring any criticism.

He's totally ignored all the warnings, brushed aside complaints (and found fault with the complainants), made offensive comments about various demographics, smirks, snarls and jeers at anyone who tries to hold him to account.

... and yet, poor ickle "Boris" is being bullied? Give me strength. If anyone is a bully - it is him.

We cannot say that Boris Johnson was bullied out of his job, he was asked to leave by his own MP’s and Ministers which is quite different.Other PM’s in the past have been asked to resign so not a new thing.I think he has given politics a bad name overall so good that we will have a new PM very soon.

Can't remember who said this recently but the quote was 'the only people who like Johnson are the ones who don't know him'.

Boris? bullied? The man has the hide of a rhinocerus. It is a bit like saying Donald Trump was bullied.

Exactly, Monica!
How anyone can possibly think that Boris has been bullied is beyond me!

People think he 'got all the big calls right', too. I think that there is a parallel universe ?

Good point MaizieD. I’ve been watching various ‘MPs speak in support of their chosen candidate. So many articulate, interesting, well informed people. I may not share their political views but it’s good to see them properly outlined in a calm, strong manner.
Pity we’ve had Johnson dominating for so long.

Seeing the way they discuss things and heckle each other, it's kind of all a bit playground really.

That's just PMQs, which has no resemblance at all to the reality of parliamentary debate. Try watching a 'normal' debate, or a Select Committee session. That's where the real work is done. That's where it looks serious.

Read what people who were at Eton and Oxford with him. He has always been a vicious bully.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jul-22 20:45:40

I’m glad I don’t squabble with friends over politics maddyone. It would never end well. Ditto religion at times. And the Royal Family/not. Doesn’t matter - when out and about there’s plenty other things to chat away with! Only here when we don’t know one another can we be more direct really. Real life is more circumspect.

Iam64 Mon 11-Jul-22 20:39:27

Allsorts, I found your post as quoted by Dinahmo above, absolutely ludicrous. You distorted the facts to suit some distorted view of reality.

Yes I think the relentless nagging and hounding by Keir Starmer, who is not in the least interested in what is good for this country, got rid of Johnson. Boris treated his wives badly and lied to them, they knew the score though when they started an affair with a married man as did Carrie, so they are all as bad, just feel sorry for the children not the wives. the one thing he is though is loyal to this country and works in its best interests. I don’t think Keir does, it was not in the countries best interest for Boris to go, but hey ho that was the only way to get him out so Keir never let up. I think his beer gate every bit as bad as Party gate. I could never respect Keir, he has won the battle but not the war. So let him enjoy his victory with that smug grin while it lasts, they all tell tge truth until they are found out, politics is a dirty business.

I'm sorry but I think that you must live in another universe.

So Starmers curry and beer with his colleagues is the same as the goings on in Downing Street, with or without the PM? I doubt that Starmer had suitcases full of booze arriving at the venue and I doubt even more that empty bottles, other rubbish, vomit etc were left for the cleaners to clear up.

maddyone Mon 11-Jul-22 19:31:45

I agree with some posters that it’s best not to discuss politics with friends. And that includes discussing BJ.

Dinahmo Mon 11-Jul-22 19:25:31

I've no idea whether it's true as I happen to believe that all politicians lie or, at the very least, go back on their word.

But I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. It did sound plausible, and he looked pretty weary when he was saying it.

The number of his lies is legion. If you chose to luck it won't take you very long to find evidence. The evidence has been mentioned on GN several times.

Yes I do think he was bullied, and no I do not think he is a bully. Flawed yes, but a fighter and courageous.
One of his faults was being too loyal, witness Dominic Cummings, Owen Paterson and others; bad judgements that led to his downfall.
Margaret Thatcher was pressured, and resigned with grace; we got John Major, who paved the way for T.Blair, who isn't dead yet.

Not loyalty. They all know where the bodies are buried. No doubt over the next few months mire misdeeds will cone to light.

MerylStreep Mon 11-Jul-22 19:17:43

Talking amongst friends I’m very surprised at the amount of support for Boris in relation to the way he was ditched.
Some of them are life long Labour voters.

Good replies - thanks.
But what I meant to ask was - can a person who has been in this world for many years, has strong moral standards, tries to do the right thing, .....not recognise BJ's complete disregard of morality as a PM.
I'm too oldfashioned.

Jaberwok Mon 11-Jul-22 18:54:05

The witch hunt started for Boris the moment he entered No 10 and has been relentless ever since. Boris has done some excellent things and certainly some foolish ones especially when defending undeserving colleagues particularly the odious Cummings. As for Mrs Mays integrity?! 'Brexit means Brexit '? No it didn't, 'No deal's better than a bad deal' No it wasn't, together with endless calender dates when we would leave regardless of any or no deal! No we weren't, and unsurprisingly didn't! Dates came and went and the EU laughed and mocked. She was I think the most infuriating PM of all time with her constant vacillation, so please not her even for a few weeks! Far better not to discuss politics with friends and family. Politicians are simply not worth falling out over especially with family and close friends. If we disagree, we just agree to differ, and leave it at that. Let's face it we can't alter anything so why fall out?

Oldbat1 Mon 11-Jul-22 17:58:17

Ah poor Didums! NOT. He is and continues to be very much a bully. The cabinet members who are standing to be PM have been complicit in all his lies. They should be banned from standing and also banned from any future cabinet positions. What an utter disgraceful situation.

BlueBelle Mon 11-Jul-22 17:36:26

Well for a bullied man he’s still here
Totally agree AGAA4 it will all be more of the sane with this crew needs a complete and utter change
Humble and Johnson do not go in the same breathe cats the man wouldn’t even be able to spell the word ‘humble’

AGAA4 Mon 11-Jul-22 17:22:35

Whoever becomes prime minister we will get more of the same. Most of them have been complicit in the lies and lied for him.
We need a new party
