Leader election £300,000

I don't think so. Some will have backers and others won't. The idea is that they are supposedly on a level playing field. The spend can be scrutinised though.

I have a vague recollection of there being discrepancies in the Tory election campaign, but I can't remember the detail.

So do they have to declare where the money has come from?

I think it's the maximum spend (that they declare, that is). It is meant to stop rich candidates who can afford PR companies, glossy brochures and the like having the advantage over someone with a few mates and an inkjet printer.

In principle it's a good idea, but not when you factor in influential friends who can do favours and an ability to hide one's funds where the eye doesn't see.

It might be the total amount donated over the past year to help with election campaigns. DH saw the figure mentioned on tv. That’s why I’m querying it. There’s so much going on at the moment that I’m losing track. They were discussing severance pay in parliament yesterday but I still didn’t understand who is eligible.
