Sir Graham Brady has just announced them. Wonder who will win? First voting tomorrow.

Liz Truss didn’t beat about the bush, as every other mp did, about what a woman was. When Nick Farrari asked her what she thought about the university student who got cancelled for saying women had vaginas she just answered. ‘ Women do have vaginas Nick.’ You wouldn’t think that was radical would you except it was the same week that Starmer said that some men had cervixes.
And yes she did wave a stick at Putin good for her.
And yes she was annoyed when she got to Oxford to find her new peer group no brighter than the Leeds sixth form she had left except they wouldn’t get to Oxford like the Oxford intake as they were all privately educated. That’s what made her angry.
Rishi Sinai was a disaster on Today this morning.
Penny mordaunt was angry when the Lords overturned the change in language from ‘birthing people’ back to ‘mother’. She shouted at the dispatch box ‘Transwomen are women’ . Now she’s desperately trying to back pedal. Not at all to be trusted for safe spaces for girls and vulnerable women.

Liz Truss said she came from a red wall area , when she comes from a nice part of Leeds. She rubbished her comprehensive school, which offended them as it’s now Ofsted outstanding , and can’t have been that bad if she got to Oxford. Which surprises me as she comes across as a dimwit.

Jeepers, same people that picked Boris, are now picking a new leader!!
Surely a clean sweep means a change of government, get rid of the whole corrupt lot. Not one of them has talked about helping people struggling with cost of living, or the fact that there are a whole lot of people that rely on food banks, all they have mentioned is tax breaks for their rich friends. Shocking

People voted Tory in 2019. You pays your money, you takes your choice. This is how the current Tory party behave.

We don't get to change the rules of the game after its started.

I have doubts about Liz Truss after she made some remark that made me flinch because it was poking a stick at Putin. I can’t even remember what she said but it was bloody stupid, especially from an experienced politician.

Anniel Thu 14-Jul-22 14:43:22

Well how disappointing. All i learned from this thread is how most of you hate the Conservative party. No one who is voting will have changed their minds about who is their preferred candidate..

Neilspurgeon0 Thu 14-Jul-22 14:41:47

My insensible and unmeasured opinion does s that Suella Braverman, who may well have the support of the ERG, because they feel they can direct and control her, is just about as much use as a psychic pig, driving a broken down motorbike with a chocolate ashtray on the steering wheel ! ?

According to Marcus the psychic pig the new PM will be Suella Braverman.

My unsensible and unmeasured comment is that the PM could not be called Suella! Penny doesn’t have much gravitas either ( though her initials are right!)

Liz Truss was a Liberal Democrat, a republican, and voted remain - basically an opportunist whose beliefs change with the wind.

Affairs seem not to be a handicap these days so that's unlikely to go against her.

I find her very weak and over-promoted, can't imagine what her supporters see in her.

DaisyAnne Thu 14-Jul-22 14:23:29

I don't know much about Penny Mordaunt but have just watched a clip of her appealing to her electorate.

Johnson had an interesting relationship with the truth. So, it seems, does Ms Mordaunt. She was expounding about her ability "as a member of the Royal Navy" ... . Now, that is not strictly a lie. However, it does not give us a view of the truth either. If I were a member of the RN, I would not be best pleased.

Naval service
Mordaunt is a Royal Naval Reservist. From May 2015 until April 2019, she had no annual training commitment and received no remuneration from the Navy. She was made an honorary commander in April 2019, and an honorary captain on 30 June 2021. As of 2022, she was the only female MP in the Royal Naval Reserve. (Wikipedia)

Elsewhere, The Independent did say, "In one sense, Mordaunt has talked more bollocks than anyone else in parliamentary history.", but that was on her insistence to carry on the culture wars, in this case against trans people. After listening to her, I feel they may be right on other points too.

I'm intrigued to know what has boosted Penny Mordaunt's "approval rating" so quickly.

I'd also like to see a side by side of what they say they believe on various subjects. Telling me that one used to be a magician's assistant and one wants to cut taxes isn't a helpful comparison.

I have no say in the matter, I'd just like to know.

Penny Mordaunt has Defence Ministry experience and is an RN reservist, so she may be the woman of the moment, with the problem of Putin - I don’t think he will stop at Ukraine.
She has put forward helpful ideas, cutting fuel tax and raising thresholds for low and middle income earners.
Not eye-catching but we need good sense.
I don’t like Liz Truss who was nearly deselected by her local party when they became aware of her affair with a married man. I know the men do it and seem to get off scot free, but for me the question is whether that was an indication of integrity

Mamgujane Thu 14-Jul-22 14:16:48

My sister has come up with some great nicknames for the whole sorry bunch. She only wishes Nadine Dorries was running so people could shout, “GoNads! GoNads!”
We’re solidly pro-Corbyn, in case you hadn’t guessed!!

polly123 Thu 14-Jul-22 13:56:29

Tom T. seems ok to me but not sure about Mordaunt as she is said to have changed her public view on gender change. Does she really know what a woman is? I know what she has said but..... It is a snake pit and the supporters are self serving and tactical in choosing who to support. They are all hoping for a cabinet post of course.

Iam64 Thu 14-Jul-22 13:30:21

MayBee70, I’m with you on Tom T as the best candidate for the country. He’s no chance though, he’s far too sensible and has great life experience to bring

List if candidates announced grin

He he! Is Rowlf going to replace Dilyn?

MissAdventure Thu 14-Jul-22 13:16:10

I'm outraged that Sunak would even be considered, in light of partygate.

MayBee70 Thu 14-Jul-22 13:13:11

I still find it hard to dislike Tom Tugendhat. They’re missing a trick by not choosing him imo ( they won’t because the leader has to be a brexiter).

If Sunak wins there is a chance that we will have to wait for a GE in 2 years time. If any of the others win they will be disastrous and we could hope for a vote of no confidence and maybe an earlier GE.

Sunak will be serious at PMQs but I think the others can be made mincemeat of by Starmer and Rayner.

That’s my opinion too Dinamho.

Despite some of their qualities it is a depressing set of choices. And Labour and the Lib Dems are similar. Not enough really good people going into politics these days.

I do hope Boris is remembered for his successes and not just where he failed to take charge, with the parties/gatherings, and his failure to deal swiftly with the horrible Pincher which ultimately was his downfall.

Politics is a nasty business and I can’t help feeling that there was a lot of jealousy involved in the downfall of the PM.

I have no doubt at all that were political jealousies and point-scoring and all the rest of the stuff that goes with politics here.

But the basic problem was that BJ was a dishonest person, who lacked integrity and respect for the rule of law - it is not possible to sustain someone like this as PM for very long, and I am glad he is going.

However, we then have to confront who might replace him. Frankly, none of the options are good ones. It is deeply deeply depressing.

If only the electorate could make the connection between failing public services and Tory dogma, then there might be some hope for the future.

Maudi Thu 14-Jul-22 08:57:18

Well I'll take a bet our next PM will be a woman, but which one?

Iam64 Wed 13-Jul-22 19:39:31

Asking for or quoting a friend doesn’t take us further. My political leanings are no secret but I’m not tribal in the way yiu suggest

Prentice Wed 13-Jul-22 18:56:13

I always find political contests exciting, and of course there will be a new PM at the end of it to celebrate.
Iam64 my Conservative voting best friend says similar things to you, but about Labour Ministers, oh, such and such is useless or clueless and so on, because they have different politics to her.I know, lots of people do this, but I always point out that there are many able people on both sides.
It is easy to denigrate on social media without really knowing the person.
