Sir Graham Brady has just announced them. Wonder who will win? First voting tomorrow.

Err. Didn’t they vote for the rich privileged Boris Johnson confused last time?

Boris says he’s skint.
Mind you, he soon won’t be. After dinner speaking and all that will boost his coffers.

Braverman is one to watch I think as she will almost certainly have the support of the ERG.

They announced their support for her yesterday.

? MissA it’s not easy keeping up with the ‘runners and riders’ (sick of that phrase now Beth ‘My Sources tell me’ Rigby) at the best of times but there’s a LOT of horse trading going on behind the scenes. Sorry what with that sentence and me wishing I’d placed a bet, it’s all ???

Iam64 Wed 13-Jul-22 18:41:10

I’m not finding it exciting Prentice but I am following closely. I’m Labour but I want the best candidate to win. I was pleased to see Zahawi go (sleaze surrounds him), Hunt is yesterday’s possibibility and his record in Health not good.

I dislike KB. Too right wing, over confident in her limited abilities.
Truss - a light weight, over confident about limited abilities. Support from Dorries and Smug must rule her out

Of course my support for Tom T wins him no votes.

Urmstongran - what’s your vote. What’s your view on Mordant? Another scary right winger for me but, I can see her appeal and she may once Tom goes, be least worse for the country. That’s what matters. (Wanders off humming I vow to thee my country)

Riverwalk Wed 13-Jul-22 18:36:46

If I had a vote, Mordaunt would be out because she uttered that right wing trope of 'Small State' - just what does she mean by that?

We need a police service, an army, a health service, border force, libraries, regulators to keep us safe and maintain standards, a judiciary, and so on. A State has to be big - which country has a 'Small State'? It's just a soundbite.

What we don't need is 800 unelected members of the House of Lords overseeing our laws; and The Commons could do with a bit of cull - do we really need 650 MPs?

Too small?

WTF?

Ignore me.
The old brain (what's left of it!) is playing up today.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Jul-22 18:23:52

Wish I’d put a bet on now!

The Tory party need to be thinking ahead to the next GE. Who can beat Starmer? (shh at the back, calling out ‘anyone really’).

Will Sunak appeal to the Red Wall voters? I don’t think so. He’s too rich, too privileged, too small and started out with a slick, presidential style campaign. Yes the MP’s in their tea rooms like him. But beware MP’s! Vote for him and you’ll lose your seats in the next election. The public aren’t behind him.

I think you are right Urmsongran and the ones you mention will be out tomorrow.
Am finding it an exciting contest.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Jul-22 18:07:06

Are you thinking of Nadine Dorries MissA? Only her preferred candidate is Liz Truss and she’s through to the next round.
?

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 17:21:50

Ah, poor old Sue Ellen.
Lips a-quovering and doe eyes.
Just like in Dallas.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Jul-22 17:16:23

Hunt out of the running. Good.
Ditto Zahawi.

Tugendhat will be next tomorrow, in my opinion.
And Braverman should stand down tonight, she’s muddying the waters.

Annaram1 Wed 13-Jul-22 12:22:26

If only us grans could be elected! We would be better than the lot of them!

Petera Wed 13-Jul-22 12:11:06

DaisyAnne Being charming (I never got that) will not be on the list

There's a scene in the West Wing where the White House Counsel, Oliver Babish, is trying to brief Abbey about something and she keeps trying to distract him with anecdotes.

He says something like "I've never found anything charming in my life". I think about it a lot when the "he is charming" nonsense gets trotted out.

vegansrock Wed 13-Jul-22 11:52:24

If it’s just another cabinet of usual failed hasbeens then I think voters will completely turn off. Unless the new PM cleans the swamp of Johnson arse lickers then thee will be no change. Depressing.

I do hope Boris is remembered for his successes and not just where he failed to take charge, with the parties/gatherings, and his failure to deal swiftly with the horrible Pincher which ultimately was his downfall.

Politics is a nasty business and I can’t help feeling that there was a lot of jealousy involved in the downfall of the PM.

He will be. History will remember him as he is. It's just they may not be the same "successes" as his followers think they are.

Being charming (I never got that) will not be on the list, I think. Nor will the inability to follow through on plans be seen as a success. Ruining the UK's reputation abroad, lying at every opportunity, being economical about where the money comes from and why. I am sure these traits will be remembered.

How far he has managed to trash democracy has yet to be calculated.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Jul-22 11:40:12

The Johnson supporters are encouraging support for Truss to put the knife into Sunak.

There is no doubt that there is a Trumpian element that sees Johnson as being betrayed etc. Truss will pick up those votes

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Jul-22 11:33:54

Johnson is a monster. And yes, there are more scandals to come, most seriously is the Lebedev scandal.

If it gives you comfort to believe that JenniferEccles, you carry on. He will in reality go down in history as the most duplicitous, self serving prime minister this country has ever had. There is undoubtedly more scandal to come.

I just heard on the radio that Nadim Zahawi says that if he is elected PM he would offer a cabinet post to Boris Johnson. Will this nightmare never end?

I wouldn't be surprised if BJ isn't kept on as Cabinet member possibly without Portfolio to follow through with Ukraine war.

In my view, and despite his many faults and mistakes, I still think they have hounded out the best person for the job.
I fear the party may come to regret it.

To an extent, yes.
And as I feel Rishi put the boot in on this, another reason why he would not be my choice.

Joseanne Wed 13-Jul-22 10:34:49

If that's your biggest problem at the moment - lucky you.
Excuse me DaisyAnne. One can still make a light-hearted comment in a dire situation. My biggest problem is that politics is becoming a circus and I feel disenchanted and let down.
I think WWmk2 is right about the final two, and I mentioned earlier why I would choose the one over the other, although still not happy. Liz Truss says the wrong things at times, but she isn't gobby.
But actually the choice is not my problem!
