The Speaker very irate!

Sir Lindsay Hoyle nearly had a meltdown yesterday before he ordered two Alba MPs out of The Commons.

I'm afraid he's not a very commanding Speaker - amiable but not up to the job. He threw out those two but did nothing apart from repeatedly yell "Shut up!" to a Tory on his right.

I bet he's looking forward to the recess!

As one of Sir Lyndsay Hoyle's constituents and see him frequently out and about here in Chorley, I disagree that he's ineffectual. All speakers yell at the baying crowd pr have you forgotten John bercows annoying braying?! Even Betty boothroyd used to tell them to shut up! Sir Lyndsay is a great MP balanced knowledgeable and fair which is probably why he took the seat of speaker. The ineffectuality lies with the members who are incapable of putting a point without resorting to insults and yelling threats! They need their empty heads banging together!

Quite frankly the House of Commons doesn't need a louder-voiced Speaker.

It needs to realise that traditions sometimes need to change and that the bear-garden behaviour of the 17th and 18th centuries should be discontinued.

As far as I have experienced, no other parliament in the world accepts behaviour of this kind from its members.

I used to enjoy listening to the Aussie version of PMQs
Rowdy? They often came close to blows and the language was terrible. I can’t seem to find where to listen now.
I believe Bercow had a bit of an international fan club and whatever you think if him he did make himself heard as did Betty Boothroyd.

How about the Iraqis throwing shoes at each other, we might throw insults but shoes?
I would rather Insults than the whole MP's be frightened to speak against the party line as in China and Russia. What a load of puppets.
Betty Bothroyd and John Bercow had the body shape for deep loud voices poor Lindsey Hoile hasn't. he was my friends MP and she said he was a lovely man.

I thought this website was for posting Grandmothers’ problems and frustrations, or even happier events,

... the clue is in the name of the forum "News & Politics".

Grandmothers are not defined purely by their role as grandparents - they vote and take an interest in politics!

And there are forums here for problems - including happy events, under "Chat" and AIBU.

Bercow was blatantly biased and bullied staff.

Bercow was 'biased' in favour of the supremacy of the Legislature (i.e all the MPs in the House of Commons, regardless of their party) over the Executive (the PM, appointed by the queen who represents the authority of the monarch in parliament and MPs chosen by the the PM to make up their government). There is absolutely no reason why the Legislature should kow tow to the Executive, because it is they, the legislature, that is sovereign..

Bercow was found to be a bully. He is in disgrace for that. Whereas Priti Patel, also found to be a bully, is still in the government hmm

Wouldn't have lasted long in a classroom of difficult children.

He's the one who would have been daft enough to get into the pool with them, then got pulled under. Unfortunately, I have seen it happen by a group of 10 special needs children.

It is the MPs who should be criticised, not the Speaker.
Betty Boothroyd and Lord Tonypandy yes; Bercow no, not impartial.

Bercow was blatantly biased and bullied staff.

Bring back Guy Fawkes.

The hole shebang needs to be stripped back to basics and some common sense applied.

No second homes for those living/representing close enough, no cheap meals, no cheap drinks. They sound like a load of 15 year olds who have raided the drinks cabinet.

AngelaGran is asking the same thing on other threads.

AngelaGran if you looks under Forums you will find a list of thread topics and you may find one which suits you.

Why is this on Gransnet?

Because we are discussing News and Politics.

The clue is in the forum title.

AngelaGran -if you aren’t interested in news or politics, stay off the news and politics threads.
You can start a jolly puppies/new grandchild/ anything you like thread, in chat maybe. Enjoy it

Ps
"Oh, shut up" fitted in well with the ambiance .

FarNorth Sun 17-Jul-22 13:36:32

I would hate to be an MP in that environment.
How is it considered acceptable behaviour from adults?
Perhaps if shouting wasn't so usual there, the Alba MPs wouldn't have chosen to shout their protest or, if they did, they would clearly have been out of order.

Disgraceful behaviour from the Speaker.
How dare he discriminate those MPs when others were more vocal and ‘naughty’
He bullied them and didn’t chastise others who were far far worse.
This is not equality and those MPs were only saying what their constituents sent them to London to do! Yes they were vocal BUT others were also vocal and not removed.
Disgraceful and distracting behaviour from a Speaker who lost the plot.
- He could have given then all without exception a drug and alcohol test.
Now that would interesting.

Yes it is.
We have a problem with our Government, politicians in general and we are frustrated that we can do little about it.
Looking forward to happier times when Johnson goes.

Does "irate" need to be qualified? Surely, the word on its own says all.

CBBL Sun 17-Jul-22 12:29:59

I like the Speaker - but I feel that he does need a Whistle or a Horn to be heard and to silence the "mob" of MP's!

They should all be ashamed of themselves!

Whitewavemark2 Sun 17-Jul-22 12:16:49

I have always thought that the Tories couldn’t wait to get rid of Bercow who would stand no nonsense and defended parliament so well.

They voted in a patsy who has failed to get to grips with the government playing fast and lose with the rules of parliament. But then, they knew this is how Hoyle would be,

Prentice Sun 17-Jul-22 12:13:46

That is good Whitewavemark2 as I have many wrinkles.

I forgot to say that the Speaker seems a very nice person but does not like to be in confrontation really, which is of course a large part of his job.

FannyCornforth Sun 17-Jul-22 12:11:55

It appears that Sir Lindsey is a ‘Grandmothers’ problem’ or ‘frustration’!

This is what my son thought too when I joined but I was indignant and told him it was for many serious subjects as well.

Prentice Sun 17-Jul-22 11:53:53

grandtanteJE65 how many do you have experience of?
I have seen many scenes of scuffling and blows traded by politicians in other Parliaments on BBC news and social media.I think our own Parliament is tame compared to that.
Even insults traded are nothing like some other countries.
Am sure you can find many examples of this on Youtube.
