Is this the Labour Party that’s many points ahead of the Conservatives and is now hopefully, going to be facing Liz Truss as Tory leader. So let’s try to rip the party apart so they can be in permanent opposition dreaming about a socialist state that, for some reason, the people who most need it don’t seem to vote for. Maybe those in society that do need the most help need a government full of the urban elite ( which is probably how you’d describe my family) who are prepared ( as we always have been) to be worse off knowing that other people in society will be better cared for.

Or the majority of people think the words urban elite are meaningless.

People (on phone-ins and general comments, not necessarily on here) can't seem to decide what class the LP cabinet should be. Angela Rayner is too 'common', Kier Starmer is a 'Sir' (no matter that he earned his title and came from a modest background) so is 'elite'.

Why does it matter? It should be the policies that count, not the wealth or 'social standing' of the individuals. It's such a regressive way of thinking, and I think it holds the UK back such a lot. It is perfectly possible to be a suitable PM with a regional accent, just as it is perfectly possible to sympathise with the poor without having experienced poverty yourself.

Perhaps that is what the Red Wall recognised that you can have figureheads like Corbyn who stand for left wing policies but the "urban elite" control the party. I still don't see how Starmer will appeal to them.

I am talking of the Labour party leadership when I talk of a party led by the urban elite.

Of which Islington Man, Corbyn, is a member.

Yet we have some people swearing that he spoke to the masses...

Current leader is from (if we have to define it) a lower middle class, aspirational, background. Not at all 'urban elite'.

Tony Blair was definitely 'urban elite' and won a landslide victory.

I can read polls, and analyses of voting patterns too, but I’m not seeing what Monica sees. I’m flattered to be seen as part of the urban elite (sounds cool) even though I live in mid Wales and am a country bumpkin. I’m seeing a working age population who are increasingly disillusioned with the Tories and are desperate for change. I’m seeing a red wall and Labour support rebuilding slowly but surely. I’m seeing cities voting Labour. I’m seeing LibDem gains in previously safe Tory seats. I’m seeing Liz Truss/Maggie Simpson being about as good a PM as a chocolate teapot. Tories I know are seeing the same.

Maybe they’ve just been brainwashed by the press into thinking that they’ve been let down by Labour. Especially as Labour haven’t been in power to let them down for 12 years and the Conservatives haven’t done anything for them. That I know of.

So why should Starmer, who would very much like the LP to be in government after the next election, start scaring the voters off?

The problem is that the overwhelming majority of people in this country, ordinary everyday people doing ordinary everyday jobs, no longer like or trust the Labour Party.

Every poll on politics and policy, and what happens shows that. They may not like the conservatives, but they do not trust labour, the party of the urban elite.

I have no time for either party. But I can read polls, and analyses of voting patterns.

The far left gave us Thatcher and Johnson, centre left gave Labour three consecutive general election victories.

I also agree with Glorianny. The Labour Party under Starmer looks like a milder Conservative party.
I also think that is what a lot of people who say they want to vote Labour are happy with, a more equal country is somehow scary. Equality makes it obvious that those who believe they are "born to rule" are no cleverer than anyone else, and that can be unsettling. (In the same way that Prince Andrew's behaviour was unsettling, because royalty is supposed to behave at a higher standard, or what really are they there for)

You can have real Tories like Boris&Co or you can have Tory lite like Starmer. They not only state the facts, they demand something is done about the rampant profiteering which exists. It's just a pity that there is no political party that supports them and their aims. Taking it back to Corbyn again (sigh). The Red Wall wanted Brexit so they voted for Boris that's easy. But the question remains as profits go through the roof and working people struggle who is speaking up for them? It's the unions. Are they backed by the LP- No they are not. Is Starmer speaking up? no he isn't.

Exactly this. One could almost imagine a new party rising from the Trade Union movement. Oh wait…..
