Galaxy, I think you may have got it the wrong way round? The ripe language on MN would make a docker faint, let alone those on GN who have a fit of the vapours at the mention of vulgar vegetables ?

vulgar vegetables.....lol here

HousePlantQueen Tue 26-Jul-22 22:44:50

My favourite is "two cheeks of the same arse" grin

MawtheMerrier Tue 26-Jul-22 22:05:56

Sorry - other GN members smile

Just looked up Welsh for carrot. Spot on. grin

So many of us have had to look it up, perhaps we should all be joining another member in Duolingo Welsh lessons? ??????? grin

Among the various bons mots coming out of this so far, I have liked two cheeks of the same arse, Truss would be out of her depth in a bird bath and now today determining the lesser of two weevils gringrin

MN might be happier with swearing but in terms of racism sexism etc they are much more strict or report more. Also MN is quite high profile in terms of womens rights discussions so they often have people who lurk who report threads. Or troll the threads, happens quite a lot on discussions of prostitution for example.

What I am wondering is which contender would Sir Keir Starmer like to deal with best?
I think he would prefer Rishi Starmer. I cannot see him wanting to cross swords with a woman with such relish.
Also I think that Liz Truss is more of a worry for the Labour Party, as she seems to be saying things that appeal to the red wall voters.

Hmm, Rishi Starmer might just unite the country? grin
Or is that wishful thinking on your part Prentice ?
I think Truss is a dead cert to hand the country to the Opposition on a plate at the next GE
That is if there is any country left to hand over.

Maw ?

Thanks for your post at 19.49 today Lucca. I find Liz Truss’s dismissal of her comprehensive education irritating at best. Her family background was privileged, just the kind of family where children are exposed to politics, to society in a way that encourages them to think to analyse and make decisions. I haven’t heard her thank her parents or her excellent school.
Sunak praised his parents
Something strange happening here, I’m defending the shouty man against the irritating, wet female

Farzanah Tue 26-Jul-22 20:15:34

Interesting article by Nesrine Malik in the Guardian about the game Truss and Sunak are playing discussing their “humble” roots.
She suggests it is a way the more privileged use to establish their status, that it has been earned and not bequeathed (by comfortable backgrounds) and thereby reinforces the class mobility mythology.
It is a very important ideology for Tories that however humble one’s background, anyone can succeed with hard work and determination. Unfortunate for several years this has no longer been the case and is indeed a modern myth.

Apparently there's a petition of Tory members to get Johnson's name added to the vote. So maybe it's not over till it's over!

What is the matter with them?

They're Tories.

???

Medical issue apparently but not affecting the two candidates

Woukd it be unkind to suggest the presenter passed out due to boredom? Or shock at the participants’ porkies?

varian Tue 26-Jul-22 19:53:10

In other words she lied about her school. Has Sunak lied or just tried to mislead?

Tory Party members, until recently supporting Boris Johnson, seem to be happy to be led by a liar

Iam64 Tue 26-Jul-22 19:51:38

Carrots indeed ?. I looked it up as well.

I’m repeating previous comments but - Liz Truss looks I’ll. she looks like a woman under great stress, which of course she is. I honestly don’t think she’s up to being PM. Not that my view matters, I’m not an old white man in Surrey not a party member or even voter. If I was, I’d vote Sunak.

I also was sickened by Truss's dismissal of her childhood; she was raised in a comfortable middle class area, her Father was a professor, her Mother a teacher and she attended a good school under a Tory administration. Her attempts to paint her upbringing as challenging are appalling and patronising, her childhood was hardly a misery of DH Lawrence proportions. I would be very hurt if I was her parents.

I think her school will feel affront too. After all they presumably encouraged her Oxford University application.
Politicians often try and either play down their roots or even make up alternative ones. This does not fool many people, especially nowadays when facts are easily checked.

I’ve said this a few times. Her school was and is an excellent school.

LadyGracie Tue 26-Jul-22 19:44:27

I think anyone would have looked shocked, but Ms Truss did appear to be walking towards the presenter who had fainted.

Farzanah Tue 26-Jul-22 19:42:42

For research purposes just popped into MN.
Plenty of ripe language floating around there!

I actually felt sorry for Ms Truss, she looked like she got a fright. Hope everybody's OK.

Farzanah Tue 26-Jul-22 19:22:47

Really Galaxy?

Galaxy Tue 26-Jul-22 19:03:53

MN is moderated much more than GN. I cant believe the stuff that stands on here. It would disappear in seconds on MN.

Ailidh Tue 26-Jul-22 18:47:37

I'm happy to call Liz Truss a carrot. ?

Following the debate on the BBC news app, and there appears to have been some trouble at the studio. However carrotty I might find some people, I hope they're OK.

Farzanah Tue 26-Jul-22 18:33:07

Why are we moderated differently to MN anyway. Is it because of our delicate sensibilities?

I've just looked up the Welsh for carrot. Tee hee.

My curiosity got the better of me grin.
