I thought some of you (but probably not all of you) would enjoy this post from Mumsnet today, posted with no apparent irony:

Well I voted for ending freedom of movement to stop foreigners coming here and taking our jobs and living on benefits. I did not vote to make any changes for me going on holiday.

vegansrock I remember flying into Heathrow, before Brexit, from Australia very early one morning. Everyone had to queue for ages in a stairwell.

vegansrock Mon 25-Jul-22 20:38:48

Let’s hope the commensurate number of staff are employed at Heathrow too. Any tourists thinking of coming to the U.K. will be well and truly deterred.

Once biometric data is collected for the first time, it is expected subsequent EU passport controls for British nationals will be quicker as their passport will not need to be stamped.

I’m happy with this. All countries should know who’s coming in or out. Of course it’s important.

Let’s just hope the commensurate numbers of staff are manning the booths is all.

Did he mention that wolverines make good housepets?

It is expected to be even worse next year as the EU is introducing biometric booths which means people will have to exit their car and enter the booth for checking.

Garage was talking about this half an hour ago with a (retired?) Border Force official. The biometric recognition will be a one off - fingerprints taken - then after that the technology will be smooth and he said ‘amazing to harness’. Comes in next year from the EU and 2024 for the UK. Only problem is, no-one is even discussing the roll out (either side). Garage said let’s hope the teams for Truss and Sunak are listening to this!

volver Mon 25-Jul-22 20:10:07

The point of the booths isn't to speed things up. It's to make the borders more secure. So biometrics to do with the face and with fingerprints.

Gosh - the EU are taking control of their borders and we don't like it. You really couldn't make this stuff up. ?

That sounds crazy. Surely modern technology can come up with something better than that.

That is the modern technology?. Which we are talking about but not got yet.

One person is responsible for this chaos

Yes I think you still need crit'air Joseanne.
We have had to get one with a 0 for our electric car. ?

vegansrock Mon 25-Jul-22 18:19:57

The 90 day rule is a consequence of Brexit. Passport stamping doesn’t seem much of a benefit .

Mamie

As far as I know the passport stamping is a rule for third country nationals. It has to be done to ensure that the 90 day rule isn't breached.
We have to hand over our passports and permanent residence cards so our passports don't get stamped.

To true Mamie I mention this up thread Sat 23-Jul-22 problem for my taxes.

And that’s what takes up a lot of the time.

Joseanne Mon 25-Jul-22 18:09:09

Nothing to do with passports, but talking travel abroad, does anyone know if my car now needs a crit'air vignette while in France? I don't want any pesky fines.

We are now the laughing stock of Europe with the insistence of all passports being stamped instead of seamless travel, and the consequent huge queues. If half a dozen French being late causes such chaos it doesn’t say much for taking back control - the French obviously have control here.

I really don’t think Europe gives us that much thought
Unfortunately the French were late on the busiest weekend of the year just pure coincidence.
I never travel abroad in these days of technology are passports really stamped with ink seems very outdated

We are actually very lucky crossing many borders entail full documentation for the car and payment of a carnet, it could be much worse. Once over the Channel you car won’t normally be checked unless it’s involved in sone kind of accident.

I’ll try that. I had to remove a double screen and the pen I use didn’t work so I used my finger and that worked. I can sometimes do a copy and paste but it doesn’t always work.

Casdon Mon 25-Jul-22 14:55:52

Off topic but it’s a cinch on your ipad*Maybee*. Find the clip on YouTube that you want, but don’t open it up. Hold your finger down on the title of your link, press copy. Then go to your post, and just hold your finger down where you want it inserted, it will automatically give you the option to paste, do that and the link appears.
