Rhys Davies, a gamekeeper has been jailed for 8 months, banned from keeping dogs fir 15 years and fined £1800.

In 2009, following finding photos of his activities, the police raided Davies tied cottage in Scotland where they found 5 Patterdale terriers in an appalling state. The injured dogs had severe injuries - some old and some fresh, which Davies had treated with unauthorized medicines, antiseptic sprays and staple guns. One dog had part of its lower jaw missing. They were all permanently disfigured.

All dogs have been rehomed.

I don't understand why this case has taken so long to get into court - 13 years.

I also don't understand why the other men in the Guardian photos have had their faces pixelated. Considering that there are regular calls for villains to be named and shamed, surely these men are a prime example for that treatment.

He sounds mentally insane. You couldn't treat any living creature like that. He should be locked up for life, you will never change that mind set. How it took 13 years well that's a disgrace. Someone hasn't done the job properly. Anyone that hurts an animal should be banned from owning any animal for life and hit them where it hurts, their wallet. It really makes my blood boil.

What a vile specimen. He probably didn’t take them to a vet because a) any vet would realise he’d been badger baiting b) the cost.

I detest cruelty to animals. I read about a little Cocker Spaniel being stolen from a woman’s garden last week, doused in petrol and set alight. I actually cried. I can’t comprehend why anyone would do this and quite honestly would happily see them euthanised and I don’t support the death penalty.

And why only eight months in prison rather than something nearer to the maximum of five years that can be handed out for cruelty to dogs?

As far as I know, the maximum prison sentence for cruelty to a badger (and a fox?) is still only six months, while it is five years for cruelty to a dog. Why, when they are sentient and very social creatures, just like dogs

I've been lucky enough to watch badgers in the wild quite a bit recently. They live in social groups, they play together, share their 'housework' (clearing out their bedding and replacing it with new), and a few evenings ago I was close enough to be able to hear them chattering away to each other as they foraged in the ditch only feet away from me.. They deserve and need every bit as much protection as dogs!

8 months! 8 years would be more appropriate. I hate cruelty to animals, and blood sports whether legal or not.
