Scotland produces more green energy than in needs and the surplus is transported via the Grid down to England. BUT the way the grid works it appears that all Scotland's energy is transported to London and then has to be sent back up to Scotland. Thus we Scots pay more for the fuel - produced on our doorsteps - than householders in the south of England. It's Madness.

Don't get me started Granny23!!

Update on France - electricity capped at 4% increase and gas at 0% for 2023. There are two things here, nationalised energy companies and early investment in nuclear.

I found it laughable a few weeks ago when a poor MP thought he was finding it difficult to manage his salary + the inflated expenses.

Has he any idea what the serfs have to live on? I am lucky to have a work as well as my state pension but many others are not so fortunate.

Many have never had a job before becoming an MP and I would think few would know the price of a loaf of bread.

We are not all chauffeured around.

Our son who lives in Spain is staying with us at the moment and he says their government is cutting the price of rail travel heavily to encourage people off the roads.

RichmondPark1 Tue 09-Aug-22 12:07:44

Why can our government not just immediately reapply the cap?

The Conservative government seem out to grind ordinary people into the ground and ruin this country. Their actions are so outrageously contrary to achieving the common good.

However the main item on the French news at the moment is that the price of a baguette is going up 5 cents. Includes lengthy vox pop in boulangeries.

Head of the CBI has today called for Johnson to act immediately. The country needs some leadership in this current crisis but they are either on their jolly hollies or having a spat at the hustings.

I've just been able to catch up with this thread and watch and read what was said. Well done Ed Davey - he has a plan. When did we last have one of those? I agree about political will Whitewave. To do that, I believe we need a group of parties willing to work together on the most urgent areas. Goodness know what will be found after the next election.

I still worry about nationalisation even though I think utilities should be 'not for profit'. I will be interested to hear more from Mr Davey.

In particular people living where the renewables are generated are paying higher standing charges supposedly because of the cost of supplying remote areas...

More from Ed Davey:-

Tory leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have come under fire from the Lib Dems for failing to come up with a plan to tackle the looming energy price cap rise. Sir Ed Davey, the party’s leader, has accused the pair of being in a “parallel universe” as he called on the Government to “cancel the October energy price rise”.

It is feared the price cap could soar to £3,687 in October – almost double the current rate of £1,971 per year. Experts warn the rate cap could balloon to over £4,000 by January 2023 – in what could spell disaster for households already struggling to make ends meet. New forecasts from Cornwall Insight mean a typical household is now predicted to pay the equivalent of £4,266 a year.

As a result, the Lib Dems have said they would cancel the rise with the Government subsidising the difference. Discussing the issue on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning, he said: “We all know that energy prices are going to go up dramatically in October, but we’ve heard nothing from either candidate of the Conservatives for prime minister. “They’ve got no plan, it’s almost as if they’re living in a parallel universe.”

He repeated this message on Sky News, and said if the Government fails to take action, “we are facing a social crisis, a catastrophe”. “If we are going to avoid a cold hungry winter for millions of people we have to have a bold plan,” Sir Ed added.

The Lib Dem leader called on the Government to recall Parliament and announce an emergency budget to deal with the cost of living crisis. He said “cancelling the energy price cap rise” should be at the budget’s core.

Sir Ed is echoing calls by former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown who has urged the Government to take “immediate action” as low-income households face losses of £1,600 a year. He said the current support package offered fails to sufficiently compensate poorer househoulds.

“Pensioners will be paying 45% of their pension in energy.”

Can’t be done can it?

Words just fail me, I mean I worry about our energy bills being in their hundreds, but thousands well it’s just not possible for the majority

Daisymae Wed 10-Aug-22 09:48:25

The logical conclusion is that people will default. Can't get blood out of a stone. On the other hand maybe Sunak and Truss each have a workable solution to steer the country through this crisis. confused

Our country is in the grips of a cost of living emergency - like nothing that has been seen in generations.

Millions of families and pensioners are being forced to choose between heating and eating. And millions more are worried about how to pay their bills this winter, with another staggering energy price rise just around the corner.

But the Tories have barely lifted a finger. The two candidates to be Prime Minister are living in a parallel universe, with no grasp on how to tackle the real issues people are facing.

Liberal Democrats are standing up and calling on the Conservatives to outright cancel the October energy price rise - saving £1,600 on average.

Let’s be clear - this rise isn’t inevitable. It’s a choice the Conservatives are making. But there’s still time for them to choose a different path. They must choose to act.

We’ve thought this through. We know how we’ll pay for it. And we have the legislation ready to go. So it’s time for the Government to recall Parliament to deal with this emergency.

Every day that goes past without any answers from the Conservatives creates more anxiety and worry about how people will pay their bills this winter. Don’t let them take you for granted. Stand up and take action today.

Ed Davey MP
Leader of the Liberal Democrats
