Why do a small number of party members get to choose our next Prime Minister? We actually elect our MPs - though admittedly its a rotten system - we need fairer voting. But MPs have some legitimacy as some people in the general population voted for them - so why don't MPs choose the next prime minister? It would not guarantee that they chose a good, wise person with high ideals - but at least there would be just a bit of democracy involved, and it would not take many weeks of fighting and no visible government.

I was surprised to learn that my 15 year old tutee has been able to vote, as he's a Conservative Party member.

There's lots of 'helpful' advice out there, including from energy companies themselves in which one is urged to spend a great deal in order to 'save' when in reality it would take years to break even, assuming you had the money in the first place! Particularly upsetting when so many already don't have enough for food and energy.
As for the leadership shambles, polite words fail me!

Loved this thread. I do wonder if Liz Truss will be The Last Straw and people will take to the streets. There were the poll tax riots and that was just one subject. Worryingly, though, Janet S-P on HIGNFY said 43% of Tory voters would like him back.

Johnson on TV today. Telling those with an old kettle to buy a new one for around £20 to save yourself £10 a year on electricity.

No different to those annoying programs showing a family how they could save money! They have a eg £ 800 vacuum but one costing £400 would be just as good saving them £400. No it wouldn't: they already have a vacuum so why spend £400 to buy another. They end the programs stating the family could save £xxxx which is rubbish statement as the expensive items they already own

Analogy or not - a new nuclear power station is going to take 10 years to build and come on stream. There will still be the problem of what to do with the nuclear waste. I don't think there is a definitive, safe answer to that problem yet. Plus the cost which for those of you who believe it, is going to massively increase the "debt" which has to be repaid by your children, grandchildren and maybe even your great grandchildren.

But he might have known that it would be picked up on, and taken out of context.
