Poll: If there were a General Election tomorrow, which politic party would you vote for?" Labour lead of 10

Just that. I can only imagine that, if Truss carries out her promises to give tax cuts to the rich and ignore those struggling, the Labour party's lead would increase.

If she has been saying this to gain power, and we have another liar in office, I don't know how usually Tory voters will react. They seem to accept the most outrageous of lies so they may stick with her. There still seems to be a tranche of Trumpian style supporters sticking to Johnson; they may transfer allegiance (and all common sense) to Truss.

You can see the chart here

I will vote for whichever candidate I judge has the best chance of ousting the sitting Tory - nothing against him personally, only his politics.

Sadly the various opposition parties who will stand do not appear to have the wit to field one candidate between them - the vain desire for power outweighs the need to remove the Tories. Rather pathetic really, and why we still have this useless corrupt shower.

CatsCatsCats Sun 04-Sept-22 17:34:24

I wouldn't vote for any, as usual. They're all as bad as each other but in different ways.

Fleurpepper Sun 04-Sept-22 17:30:44

Exactly, even in you live in mainland UK, your vote would never count if you live in a Constituency that does not represent your political view. Mine has never ever counted in main elections.

varian Sun 04-Sept-22 17:09:29

It should matter Feather

You are a citizen of the UK and if we were a true democracy like all the other democratic countries and voted by Proportional representation, then every vote would count, including yours.

Feather Sun 04-Sept-22 16:56:59

Doesn't matter what I vote living in Northern Ireland.

Fleurpepper Sun 04-Sept-22 16:06:09

As said, brave and to be respected. But I am confused, it Truss is weak and lacking in gravitas and her economic policies are widely questioned. why would you vote for her (as she is very likely to be our next PM).

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 04-Sept-22 09:09:40

Yes Fleurpepper, GN isn’t the place to admit you’re a Conservative voter, but I’m always honest. I don’t agree that both candidates for leadership are ‘just so bad’. I would prefer to see Sunak win as I think he is the better candidate by far but that seems unlikely. I think Truss is weak and lacking in gravitas and her economic policies have been widely questioned. We shall see.

Lol again clumsy fingers 12 years not 22 of Tory rule. ? Tired fingers. Off to bed now. ???

BrightandBreezy Sun 04-Sept-22 00:28:09

Correction ...3 full terms of Tory cuts. Fingers got the wrong placing there ?

BrightandBreezy Sun 04-Sept-22 00:27:04

It will be Labour for me. We have had 4 full terms of Tory cuts and it is seen everywhere, especially in the NHS and in our schools.
The problem is that if Labour do win the next election people will expect miracles in reversing the last 22 years of Tory rule. This can't be done in one political term and when things don't happen fast enough people will say 'typical labour' and revert back to Tory again with more cuts. One term in office, with discontent raging over pay, energy price hikes and a massive recession isn't going to be enough to reverse the issues with an NHS on its knees ext.
I will vote Labour but for me there is a big problem with my choice. That is the Party's current stance on the Trans issue.

No sorry, I don’t.

That kind of points scoring, where winning the argument is the most important thing doesn’t appeal. It doesn’t really seem to change anything and nobody is listening to each other.

Even if the ruling party was bringing in something really good the opposition would oppose it regardless. And even if the opposition was making a really good point about some proposed legislation the ruling party would try to put them down. Just to be top dog rather than genuinely exploring the issues.

Fed up with adversarial politics☹️

Actually not true, because had you been watching you would know that on key decisions in Covid management and the Ukraine war, the opposition have been supportive of the government. However on other issues where the parties differ in approach I’m interested to know what do you think the alternative to opposing a motion is Lathyrus?

Daisymae Sat 03-Sept-22 23:02:12

Labour. The last government in the last decade and especially the last few years have been shameful. The country needs to rebalance.

I agree Lathyrus they clearly need to spread the message far and wide that they have policies which will benefit the population at large.

They will spread the message. There were other things to do after the last disastrous election. Remember most people are not as interested in politics as those on these threads.

I will be very interested to see how KS deals with Truss in PMQs.

What other things. Genuine question.

Because Labour has seemed almost nonexistent in the last three years, to me. Internal stuff?

I would like any government that could act for the common good and make rational, considered decisions.

If that’s Labour it’s not coming over to ordinary people who just want a good ordinary life.

Gloriany doesn’t even think we exist?

Can I just ask if you watch PMQT on Wednesdays when parliament is sitting and, if so do you not think that Starmer has been out performing Johnson for a long time?

M0nica Sat 03-Sept-22 20:39:49

None of them, or possibly Monster Raving Loonie party.

Fleurpepper Sat 03-Sept-22 19:53:53

I voted for labour under Tony Blair. Since the demise of Blair and Brown I have reverted to voting Conservative and expect to do so again as things currently stand, but we don’t yet know what any of the parties’ manifestos will look like, nor which personalities would be likely to form another government.

You are very brave saying this. And of course it has to be respected. But just do not get it, after 12 years of this debacle, and with the 2 candidates being just so bad.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 03-Sept-22 19:01:20

What we should remember is that this is not a Tory country. The majority of people do not vote for a Tory government.

The trouble is that the vote is split, and to get rid of them we must unite and vote tactically. Then I think we should do everything to ensure PR of some sort.

varian Sat 03-Sept-22 17:55:20

The tactical anti-Tory vote is the sensible vote.

We have got to work together to get rid of them.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 03-Sept-22 16:32:56

If needs be I would vote tactically to get Tories out, but I don’t need to.

Labour.

Bridie22 Sat 03-Sept-22 15:15:25

Another vote for the sausage roll, I have no idea at all who I would vote for...but it won't be a Tory.?

Blondiescot Sat 03-Sept-22 14:59:02

SNP

Philippa111 Sat 03-Sept-22 14:56:43

I'm an SNP voter and also locally also voted Liberal Democrat.

The astonishing thing now is BJ seemed like an almost benign option when you see what it to come ,in the form of Liz Truss!

Listen here to Mairi Black on the tories and where they are already headed

youtu.be/nVZ3QwA5wy8

The tories have almost no presence at all in Scotland. The voting system needs to change but as long as they are in power it won't.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Sept-22 14:37:06

I was never a supporter of Johnson but wasn’t ‘turned off’ (from voting Conservative) by his lack of acquaintance with the truth. Lord knows what Liz Truss will be like - she definitely wouldn’t have been my choice, but not being a party member I have no say in the matter.

DillytheGardener Sat 03-Sept-22 14:36:41

Lib Dem, as sadly they are the only ones likely to get in this area.

I despair, having a grandchild seeing the worsening effects of global warming is terrifying, I’d like a government that would take some major and unpopular steps to combating it.

MiniMoon Sat 03-Sept-22 14:34:07

I usually vote LibDem, so they would get my vote. I live in a very rural part of the country which always has a huge Conservative majority. I know it's a wasted vote, but I live in hope.
