Shall we have a thread about it?

It will be interesting (I hope)

So much for democracy. Money buys everything.

Farzanah Thu 08-Sept-22 16:02:10

Stinks doesn’t it?

NEW Liz Truss raised almost £420,000 from donors to fund her Tory leadership campaign.

Biggest single donation of £100k came from Fitriani Hay, wife of James Hay, a former BP executive with a luxury goods empire.

News leaking out at the moment re Truss's campaign funds. £100k from the wife of a former BP CEO - apparently she received £420k from energy companies. Anyone accept her reasons for not doing a windfall tax?

Would be grateful for links, please.

It was news breaking on LBC whilst I was listening to James O'Brien - from his political editor who mentioned a Times journalist who had been doing some digging (could be Sunday Times). No further info because it was a break in the coverage of the energy debate. There will be more info later I suspect, although overshadowed by the news about the Queen's health. Doesn't look good.

Truss is losing the argument

Daisymae Thu 08-Sept-22 11:45:41

Her lobbyists were employed by Libya.

Imo this is a government that know they’re not going to win the next election. So they will do everything possible to line the coffers of their rich backers with a view to funding for future elections. If Truss is facing a barrage of problems as PM Keir is going to inherit far more. And the British public are just collateral damage.

Good point.

Call me cynical but I believe it was ever thus Daisymae. We may be under the illusion that our politicians make the decisions but it is major corporations really calling the tune.

Daisymae Thu 08-Sept-22 10:51:19

Trusses chief of staff is a former lobbyist who helped with her campaign. Following the clear out of staff in No.10 a lot of replacements are former employees of the lobbying company. So I'm thinking that policy making is going to be formed/guided by their objectives? I'm wondering who paid them? Freezing the price of energy increases for 2 years will kick the can down the road until after the next general election. But the taxpayer will still pay. Meanwhile the energy companies keep their multi billion windfall profits. Then of course there's fracking, more drilling for north sea oil. So instead of reducing carbon emissions we extract as much as possible under the cloak of the energy crisis. To hell with the future, we're making lots of lovely money.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 08-Sept-22 09:20:21

Truss’s free market credentials shone bright and clear, so do not expect any policies that will curtail the profiteering of the big energy companies.

Any suppression of prices will eventually have to be paid for by the consumer - the supplier will never be expected to lower profits.

Shadow minister had no influence on policy anyway

Well that puts the Labour front bench in its place! ???

vegansrock Thu 08-Sept-22 08:14:57

I would think Thornberry an unsuitable health minister but she isn’t - Coffey is. Shadow minister had no influence on policy anyway. I seem to remember critics moaning when Labour had a vegetarian for Agriculture minister.

FannyCornforth Thu 08-Sept-22 08:12:26

I like Therese Coffey. It’s good to see diversity of all kinds.
I should imagine that there are lots of smokers, and even more drinkers (some of them very heavy drinkers), in the HoC.

I am willing and praying that this cabinet will do the business and pull out all the stops to help the nation.
I’ve never felt like this before about the political situation.

MawtheMerrier Thu 08-Sept-22 08:06:23

I don’t think criticism of Coffey's unhealthy lifestyle ( not just appearance) is because she is female. I would have the same misgivings about the suitability of a man with the same attributes being health secretary.

Just as an aside, were you equally critical of Labour’s Emily Thornberry – when a former shadow health minister who drinks and smokes and shows similar disdain for public health guidelines?
I wonder if she was similarly “fat-shamed” or experienced the nastiness directed at Coffey.

OK let's lower the tone and say that ankle grazer trousers and high heels are not a good look on someone who seems to have trouble walking in heels.

I quite agree. Didn’t mind the trousers, but the heels were ridiculously high and spindly. Liked the blouse and jacket. And before you say anything, I would have criticised a man’s clothes if I didn’t like them, too.

LinFreed Thu 08-Sept-22 05:59:48

I was really impressed. Clear on her policies and answered the questioners with confidence.

Whatever your politics, she has gained gravitas during her time in various ministerial positions.

I think she acquitted herself very well at PMQ’s…

nanna8 Thu 08-Sept-22 00:00:12

I thought she looked very dignified and fairly young to be a PM. Hope she turns out well for you. Give her a chance !

MawtheMerrier Wed 07-Sept-22 23:52:47

I am no Truss supporter but pretty sickened by the petty woman on woman comments so far
Truss’s ankle length trousers and heels? Really? (I hadn’t noticed any problem she may have walking in heels) - but so what ?
Coffey’s weight and that she has been known to enjoy a drink and been seen smoking. How very virtuous her critics must feel.
As it happens Churchill was massively overweight, smoked cigars and started on the brandy at breakfast. (Don’t try this at home, folks), but he did sort of contribute to the Allies winning the war.
Is this the best you can come up with? Hair next perhaps or the colour of her lipstick?
