It sounds worrying, doesn’t it?

Caleo Thu 08-Sept-22 18:00:38

I remember her since she and He sister Margaret Rose were the Little Princesses known from newsreels , the BBC and pictures in newspapers and magazines

I was five when the King died. I couldn't understand why my mother was crying or why she took me up to the nearest phone box to phone her mother. This involved ringing her mother's next door neighbour who had a telephone (!!!) Then the neighbour had to fetch my grandmother so they could talk. After all this we had to get on a bus and actually go and see my grandmother. I never did really understand why all the fuss, but it was fun the following year when we were all dressing up at school for the coronation.

I think the next coronation will be much lower ket.

"Calendargirl", I too believe that the Queen died a few hours ago when Nazim whispered in Liz Truss's ear during Parliament. After that, all the family members were seen to be heading to Balmoral. I think they are all organising and arranging for the announcement. I feel very sad and tearful. It is the end of an era. So sad.

I'm not sure who you mean by Nazim, sorry.

The PM will be the first person in the Government to be told.

Hopikins Thu 08-Sept-22 17:59:22

I find the fact that all the announcers on TV are wearing black
BEFORE, the Queen's death has been announced.
Why ? I am afraid I find that quite disrespectful, WHEN and IF her demise is announced, should be the time to wear mourning clothes not before.

Rosie51 Thu 08-Sept-22 17:51:47

There aren't reports of the other grandchildren being on their way to Balmoral? I do hope they've all been given the opportunity to say goodbye. A sad time for the whole family.

BlueBelle Thu 08-Sept-22 17:49:48

For crying out loud leave Meghan and Harry alone they are all doing what they consider is right it is not the time for such vitriolic assumptions
Totally agree Jenn and very well put, some people just can’t manage any thread without nastiness and digs
No body know anything…. Harry loves his Gran, leave him alone

hollysteers Thu 08-Sept-22 17:47:32

The Golden Age of Elizabeth I is often cited, but for me, this Queen’s reign cannot be bettered, and I speak as one with a Republican head, but a monarchist heart.
She truly radiates goodness, modesty and duty.
Like others, I’m surprised by my own emotions today.

vegansrock Thu 08-Sept-22 17:44:16

Blimey turned on to watch pointless and there’s more mawkish speculation no news- why are they doing this? She could linger on for days or weeks if she’s not already deceased and we’re not being told. One way let us know or stop it now !

Jaberwok Thu 08-Sept-22 17:42:44

Interestingly, there is 101 years between the birth of the Queens first PM and her last. Winston Churchill 1874,Liz Truss 1975. Extraordinary!

grannydarkhair Thu 08-Sept-22 17:42:20

I’m no Royalist and rarely comment on threads about the Royal family, but please, could this thread not disparage Meghan or anyone else in any way. It’s about the Queen and should remain that way imo.

I don't think that she had died then, Jenn. The Palace would have a set order for notifying people and it wouldn't have been done in that way, pieces of paper passed round in the HoC. If she dies in Scotland, however, the death certificate will I believe state the time of death if known - though it's not impossible for things to be fudged in this sort of situation. However, we won't know until all those who really need to know have been told. I trust Harry will arrive 'in time', or I can imagine the can of worms that would open. His choice I expect to travel separately though - he was in London.

Why do we have to have nasty comments about Meghan on this thread? We are all posting lovely memories about the Queen and how sad it is that her life is coming to an end. Please, please leave all the petty unkindness about Meghan out of this. Harry is the Queen's grandson and he absolutely adores his grandmother, his wife and his two sweet children, this is the life he wanted, love and support and his own family not being the heir to the throne, he wanted his own life away from the "Royal Family" just as his mother wanted. After all, he is the spare NOT the heir. All I can think of at this moment is the sadness of the end of the life of the Queen. She has been a wonderful and dutiful Queen for 70 years. I was born when she became Queen. Let's not sully this thread with unkindness and petty hatreds.

Just to clarify, I didn’t actually say the Queen died a few hours ago, I was quoting another poster.

I really hope she is still alive, not just because I want her to be, but to give family a chance to say their goodbyes,

Here is a helpful account of Operation Unicorn and the events that will follow an announcement of Her Majesty’s death.

I've just sat down to read the thread.
I'm sorry if I upset somebody but I haven't a clue how. It's just my personality to make light of tragedy and I apologise.
My second post was just stating facts as I saw them.

GrannyLaine Thu 08-Sept-22 17:24:08

This will be a poignant time for both Prince William and Prince Harry bearing in mind that they were staying at Balmoral with the Queen when their mother died. Whatever the day brings, this is the day that everything changes for the family, and for us all.

Grandma70s Thu 08-Sept-22 17:21:54

Also, of course, the first day at a new school for George and Charlotte.

It is little Prince Louis’s very first full day of school, so it is appropriate for the Duchess of Cambridge to stay with him.

Daddima Thu 08-Sept-22 17:14:15

I’m expecting a 6 o’ clock announcement.

lemsip Thu 08-Sept-22 17:13:13

Harry on his way to balmoral alone! just heard on news.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 08-Sept-22 17:11:32

I thought I would feel emotional on a day like today but strangely not, though I feel the goosebumps mentioned earlier. I guess that, despite being a monarchist and a great admirer of HM, I see a very long life well lived and for her there is no sadness in death.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 08-Sept-22 17:08:12

I do see what you mean, Dickens, but after the way she has behaved I err on the side of thinking it has been made clear to her that her attendance would not be a good move. I'm not sure she knows what 'diplomatic' means. If she turns this into another publicity opportunity she is unlikely to be forgiven.

The Duchess of Cambridge is of course with her children, quite rightly. There has been no mention of the Sussex children having travelled to the UK.

Jaberwok Thu 08-Sept-22 17:08:00

Have just discovered my first post. I thought it hadn't gone through so apologies for the repeat.

merlotgran Thu 08-Sept-22 17:06:24

WW The Duchess of Cambridge is with her children. The Queen’s death will be a momentous occasion for them, not just because she’s their great grandmother but once protocol kicks into gear they will have a lot to deal with.

I think it would be inappropriate for Meghan to be there and not Kate.
