It sounds worrying, doesn’t it?

Tinydancer Thu 08-Sept-22 17:06:08

I'm not even a monarchist but have been shedding tears on and off since I first heard the announcement earlier today.
I am SO sad, especially with the country in such dire straights too. She has always had a steadying hand on it.
God bless her.

It's strange that Harry is travelling alone and that Meghan is staying in London, albeit not attending an event tonight. I hope they are not preparing to make capital out of this, not feeling welcome etc. Not the time or place, but I wouldn't put it past them.

I don't expect we will hear anything until after Harry has arrived and the Palace has informed Commonwealth leaders, assuming of course that the end is imminent as does appear to be the case.

I suppose it is just possible that MM is being 'diplomatic' - knowing that this is a time when it's really not about her?

Who knows?

It would certainly be better on such a sombre occasion if the media attention was not diverted, if you see what I mean...

I’ve just seen that Harry is going alone. Quite right as I found it astonishing that Meghan would attend. I suppose Harry is her grandson but I’m sure it would have been a terrible atmosphere if they were both there. If and when the Queen does due it will be a seismic moment for the country.

I remember the death of George V1 because we were sent home from school at midday, and I remember the photograph of the three Queens, Mary, Elizabeth and Elizabeth, heavily veiled at the funeral. But nothing like the coverage because few people had television.
Inevitable, but still sad.

Jaberwok Thu 08-Sept-22 17:01:44

I too remember the death of George V1th, I was 9 and we all cried. I think Annie's right, we are being prepared for the inevitable. I shall be very sad.

Nicholas Witchell has stated that Meghan might not be warmly welcomed.

And The Duchess of Cambridge? Who is also not attending.

Casdon Thu 08-Sept-22 17:00:50

The Sussexes may have their children in the UK too?

Jane43 Thu 08-Sept-22 16:59:47

Meghan has made several scathing remarks about the royal family in her very recent PodCasts and a veiled threat that she will speak out about them in a recent magazine interview so with that and the fact that she was only a member of the royal family for a very short time I’m not surprised that she isn’t accompanying Harry. Hopefully she will keep quiet for the foreseeable future.

Rosina Thu 08-Sept-22 16:57:31

My daughter told me of the situation at lunchtime - and I wanted to cry. Perhaps because she has been there for virtually all of my life. As a very small girl I recall the death of George V1, and remember the Coronation the next year. God bless her.

V3ra a very sensible decision, but a lonely journey for him, unless of course other grandchildren are flying with him.

I'm not surprised that so many of us are feeling sad and even tearful (I am). Monarchist or not, while we seem to have lived through very shifting times, the Queen had been a reassurance and constant in our lives.

yes Kate needed to be at home for their children, first day at school and Kate is their stability. She needs to tell them before they hear it via media and school friends

It has just been announced that the Duke of Sussex is travelling to Scotland alone

As did William.
Sensible decision by Harry.

karmalady Thu 08-Sept-22 16:49:12

I have just been speaking to my dd who was an army officer and now my eyes have gone prickly and I have a lump in my throat. I vow to thee my country, so apt right now and played at my dd wedding when she and her army officer husband married and walked under an archway of swords

Why are the reporters all wearing black ties and white shirts, if the Queen is still alive?

Seems a bit weird.

HurdyGurdy Thu 08-Sept-22 16:41:38

I am surprised at how emotional I feel today. I'm neither fiercely pro-Royal or anti-Royal, but I have had a definite lump in my throat today since the first bulletin, saying she was under medical supervision.

I don't know her, I've never met her and she doesn't mean anything to me personally, as a friend or relative does, but she's just always "been there" in my life. I just feel sad.

My friend works in "Fleet Street" and says that the newspapers are preparing special editions for tomorrow and an obituary.

I feel for the news broadcasters. Of course they are going to stay on air for as long as this crisis lasts, but goodness, how difficult it must be having to find something to say (endlessly) to fill the time.

LilyoftheValley Thu 08-Sept-22 16:39:22

Very sad. She has been there for my lifetime. I just hope that wretched Markle woman is not allowed to upset her. Her antics have caused enough dismay to Her Majesty.

Allsorts Thu 08-Sept-22 16:38:02

MayBee, she said she wanted to see Boris and Truss, that’s why they went to Balmoral. Her dedication to duty and protocol is part of her character, even though old and frail she makes her mind up no mistake.
She has been a good Queen and had a long life, she’s all most of us know and respect, so it will be be sad when she dies.

Petera Thu 08-Sept-22 16:19:01

Although apparently it's Operation Unicorn because she is in Scotland

GrannySomerset Thu 08-Sept-22 16:18:57

I can’t help wondering how the Sussexes will monetise events in due course.

I was ten when we were summoned to an assembly before lunch, absolutely unheard of, to be told the news and to pray for our young queen. We were the new Elizabethans in a new and hopeful age, and anything was possible. I can still recall how sad but uplifted I felt, and although critical of some members of the family I am still convinced that a constitutional monarchy is a good thing.

GrandmasueUK Thu 08-Sept-22 16:17:59

I’ve just been watching the clip of the Queen and Paddington. Brought me to tears yet again, but such a lovely happy memory with the marmalade sandwich.

FannyCornforth Thu 08-Sept-22 16:17:16

Ah, thank you both.
I remember that Diana had the Queen Mother’s funeral
