I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

I don't think the English pinched him MaizieD as such. He was off down south quick as he could and never came back! ?

Mixed race? No, the same race but different nationalities.

Indeed! They're all members of the human race.

growstuff Wed 14-Sept-22 17:07:41

I discovered yesterday that Queen Elizabeth was the 27 x gt granddaughter of William the Conqueror, who was descended from the Viking Rollo - just saying!

And he was Scottish wink

Like his French and Welsh/English/Norman French etc. etc. grandmother & great grandmother...

These flipping monarchs are so unbelievably mixed race... grin

I find that threads that accuse people of being like terrorists never end well.

Highly doubtful there’s been any precedent so more puerile posting.

What I can say with certainty is that any threads on the Royals that you take part in invariably end up being removed by GNHQ. fait accompli

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-Sept-22 16:51:32

merlotgran I think The King appears to be holding it all together along with the rest of the family.

Let’s hope they have time between now and going to Wales to rest and gather their thoughts. Then the weekend to mourn in private before the funeral.

Actually James V1th of Scotland, as a g.grandson of Margaret Tudor, elder sister of Henry Vll1th by her marriage to James 1Vth of Scotland was Elizabeth 1st's legitimate heir. The Hanoverian line after Queen Anne, same problem, no living children, also originated from James V1th of Scotland /1st of England through his daughter Elizabeth.

Yeah.. But..

I'm reading volver as saying "James VI was a Scottish king and the English pinched him..."

Which I find quite amusing, having never really thought about it like that before...

(And I knew all the genealogy bit)

volver Wed 14-Sept-22 16:46:57

And he was Scottish wink

My point, which I'm sure I did not explain clearly, is that the late Queen and now King Charles are not monarch of Scotland because Scotland is part of the UK, but because they are monarch of Scotland as a separate entity. Just as, for instance, they are monarch of New Zealand, or Australia.

There was some announcer on BBC yesterday who didn't know why the Royal Standard is different in Scotland. This explains why.

GrannyGravy threads about the royal family are always the
same , wasn’t always so

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-Sept-22 16:34:17

This thread has meandered so far from the OP

I really wish we could have at least one thread without arguing, rudeness and insults being thrown around, unfortunately this is not that thread.

Sir Winston Churchill too in 1965 ReadyMeals

It's strange that when all the TV commentators are talking about past experiences with lying in state and the public filing past, they all say it's not been seen since George V1. They seem to have forgotten that it happened similarly for the Queen Mother.

volver Wed 14-Sept-22 15:47:06

Apologies, I should have been using the past tense when referring to the late Queen. I did not mean to offend and hope no offence was taken.

volver Wed 14-Sept-22 15:41:01

of course she was their Queen as Scotland is part of the United Kingdom

Just a little point of pedantry, not particularly aimed at anyone.

She is the Queen of Scots because she is descended from James VI. I think a better way of describing the situation of the monarch in these islands might be..."she is Queen of the UK and particularly England because when they ran out of royals down there they were able to ask Scotland to provide one for them."

HTH.

I'm afraid tickingbird when posters accuse me of sounding like a terrorist and irrationally telling me I use ethnicity to characterise people unfairly, I don’t feel that I have to be nice to them. ^C’est la vie.^

You did make use of ethnicity, volver. You tried to show the Queen Mother was not ethnically at least part Scottish. It was a very political move and I find that worrying. Obviously, you do not but, none the less, I am allowed to say I do. I will try and explain once more.

An Idiot's Guide to Ethnicity.

Just think of America. I know it's very different as the majority are comparatively recent immigrants or descended from immigrants. That makes it simpler to understand. They will describe themselves, for example, as African (or Black) American, Italian American, Native American, English American, etc. In each case, they are describing first their ethnicity (I doubt they would go into detail on the percentage) and then their citizenship.

Again, for example, in Venezuela, you might be African (or Black) Venezuelan, European (or White) Venezuelan or Amerindian Venezuelan.

In the UK, you might, in a similar way, describe both your heritage and your citizenship. It is, of course, less common here. We, too, are all descended from immigrants. However, it is so much further back in many cases that people don't always use both descriptions although they exist in the same way.

You do not get to choose your ethnicity; it simply exists. Citizenship is bestowed on you by your country. Writing people out of either is not possible. If the Queen Mother is thought of or described as Scottish British, because she has Scottish ancestry, I can see no reason why anyone would argue with that. For as long as you seem not to understand I will continue to explain. It is, quite obviously, my duty to help someone who seems so confused. You seem to think that you can metaphorically beat people into submitting to your beliefs. Perhaps, by this very tedious measure, I can convince you that will never happen. Persuade - possibly. Bully - not.

You also put me down as a supporter of the Sussexes. For the nth time…I am not.

But thanks for partial apology anyway.

No one would expect you to be nice! No excuse for such deeply unpleasant posts directed at those that don’t share your views. That’s not life that’s nasty!

Oh whereas…..

Exactly … accusing someone of acting like a terrorist or thinking like one is not on - no matter how their views differ from yours or annoy you.

Lucca I do apologise, having just seen your comment, because I thought you either Scottish or living in Scotland, as you are neither I can see why you would not like this.
as I did say, I think I mixed you with another poster on this site.

The crowds were certainly out in force in Scotland to honour the late Queen as they knew that she enjoyed her times at Balmoral, and of course she was their Queen as Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, and long may it stay so.

I would like to say to Grany that I respect her/his Republican views although they differ from mine and that her/his comments are always polite to other GN posters and never ever unpleasant or rude.Grany is exactly the same on the subject of politics too, so well done Granyfrom me.
