Is this appropriate?

I think it makes him look political. I can see some of goodwill people seem to have for him leaching away as a consequence.

But I dislike both the monarchy and Truss, so recognise I’m a tad biased.

Yes that is correct.

Truss was strongly advised against her plan to troop around with Charles and in the best tradition of the Tory government

I really don't think it's a good look. There is far too much work to be done here that has been delayed for far too long by the leadership contest.

I think it's unusual but not inappropriate. I think we will a lot of new ways of doing things. Some will work some wont. At the moment everyone is trying to do their best.

I totally agree. It's time people stopped living in the dark ages and started modernising some of these old practices.

I'm not a liz truss supporter but I have no problems with this whatsoever. Has anybody ever thought that she might be doing it because she has been invited by the King.

But why is she doing it? She has a mountain of work, a lot to get through in a shortened Parliament and both Energy, Finance and Health (to name just the currently obvious) are in crisis.

Why does she feel the need to add to that? It is not her job. It can only be for self-aggrandisement unless you have another reason to offer. She needs to get on with what she was sponsored, by her party, to do.

What people are overlooking is the constitutional separation of powers between the legislature - parliament of which Truss is part and the executive which includes the monarchy and government.

However monarchy must be seen to be politically neutral, (revolution might happen if he is seen as biased) and Truss has been advised to keep her nose out.

I've read it isn't true! That news of it being untrue came from no 10

Did anyone hear the Australian man who said they would far rather keep the Monarchy than have a Putin or a Trump?
A commentator on TV a few days ago said that the 'Grand Tour' for the King, Queen and Prime Minister was because they were all new, and it seemed appropriate to meet the people. Why is it assumed that this will influence anybody's politics? Seeing the PM and the King together wouldn't make me vote differently.
As for the table arrangement - what a fiasco! Whoever chose to put the inkwells at the bottom edge of the table, when they should have been at the top, above the document, wasn't thinking about trying to sign and potentially knocking the inkwell on the floor or worse still over the document. Bigger table needed, inkwell at side of document - I could have set that out in a far beter way! There - that's several matters off my chest - I'm off for lunch with my DD.

Startingover61

I agree with all those in favour of Liz Truss accompanying the King on this forthcoming tour.

Who has actually said it is a good idea?

DaisyAnne Mon 12-Sept-22 13:09:12

DA distasteful is right.

Whenever are the Tories going to actually govern!

Wasn't that what she promised to do? She has a totally different job, and she needs to get on with it. Silly PM.

Usernametaken Mon 12-Sept-22 13:02:22

MaizieD. Agree with you 100%. So much nastiness. And if we didn’t have a Monarchy, can you imagine having a President!!!!
Millions of people grieving for her majesty tell another story.

Nannina Mon 12-Sept-22 12:46:48

It’s wrong and blurs the Royal/politic divide. I don’t think it will do either of them any good

DaisyAnne Mon 12-Sept-22 12:43:59

Thank you for the link "OldRose". It seems that Truss's team (and Truss) have made a complete hash of things - nothing new there then.

Ministers have started tentative conversations about whether to cancel parts of the party conference recess in order to make up time for parliamentary business – including passing the new energy bills relief package.

Truss will face a nightmarish schedule for parliamentary business in the days after the funeral on Monday 19 September, with parliament set to rise for recess on Thursday 22 September.

Why, oh why, is she going at all other than jumping on the Queens/Kings bandwagon. It really rather distasteful.

That seems very odd. What is she going to do? According to that report, it sounds like she’ll be a third wheel while the King and Queen (how very strange to write that) meet people.

I don't think she should be there. I'm sure that she's doing it for reasons of self-egrandisment and it just isn't appropriate. She should be getting to grips with the job of PM, not swanning about with anyone.
(Travelling with someone like Truss is my idea of hell in any case!)

Nusgranny Mon 12-Sept-22 12:38:37

Eezybee you said "Of course the monarchy and the government should mix. Parliament will be in recess I believe during the official mourning period, presumably until the funeral, so what better to do than to tour the country and meet, and listen to, people.
Not junketing around, not touting for popularity, but work."

Just because Parliament is in recess doesn't mean the work of government stops. Truss is jumping on the bandwagon. She should be in Downing Street doing her job.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 12-Sept-22 12:38:14

This won’t bring her much popularity. Her new S of S for business etc. has made this recent announcement

JRM "It's very hard to believe that the
right to paid holiday is an absolute
moral right"

Says the man who avoids paying income tax and is able to do so because of his wealth.

Keekaboo Mon 12-Sept-22 12:36:48

I also think this is Wholly inappropriate
I agree with others it makes him seem political.
Truss must be rubbing her hand in glee.
I like King Charles but can’t stand the new PM she is just a Maggie Thatcher clone.
Even if it was another PM from another political party it would still be inappropriate.
Waken up King Charles !

Casdon Mon 12-Sept-22 12:32:52

I believe Liz Truss is trying to win over the other nations, that’s why she wants to go to the services in all the UK nations, riding on the goodwill towards the Queen.

Not appropriate in my view. Monarchy and politics should not mix. Bias springs to mind.

Liz Truss said and supported many hings which were quickly abandoned for her to climb the Tory pole

grannysue101 Mon 12-Sept-22 12:24:40

Probably too late to change plans but I totally agree. It's completely wrong.

henetha Mon 12-Sept-22 12:23:41

I've always liked Charles, OldRose and am glad to share your view that he will make, already is making, a fine king.
