Is this appropriate?

I think it makes him look political. I can see some of goodwill people seem to have for him leaching away as a consequence.

But I dislike both the monarchy and Truss, so recognise I’m a tad biased.

Fabulous, a great new beginning and bonding between political and monarchy. Really pleased they are doing this tour together

Grany Sat 10-Sept-22 21:41:11

Yes I agree not appropriate

I am biased too I want a republic

While we are being told by many people 'now is not the time' surely there is no better time to discuss monarchy and republicanism than with the passing of the longest reigning monarch in British history and in a period of great uncertainty for many people in Britain? Yet this is the one discussion that you will not see or hear in the British media, or in public discussion by politicians, or public debate. Instead, we are treated with the absolute assumption that all of us want the monarchy to continue and that there are absolutely no issues with the hereditary principle, which denies the democratic principle.

That seems very odd. What is she going to do? According to that report, it sounds like she’ll be a third wheel while the King and Queen (how very strange to write that) meet people.

Barmeyoldbat Sat 10-Sept-22 21:49:10

Not sure why they are doing this, it does seem strange

BlueBelle Sat 10-Sept-22 21:53:33

The trouble with the Telegraph links are you can’t read them unless you pay for them
But from the headlines alone it seems very strange indeed

Not appropriate in my view. Monarchy and politics should not mix. Bias springs to mind.

It looks to me as though it was Liz Truss's idea. - "The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said she would travel with the King to Scotland on Monday, followed by visits to Northern Ireland on Tuesday and Wales on Friday.
“The Prime Minister believes it is important to be present for what will be a significant moment of national mourning around the United Kingdom,” the spokesman said.

Sky and the BBC are also reporting it, I believe.

MaizieD Sat 10-Sept-22 22:55:53

Completely inappropriate.

She is politicising the King's tour.

I'm really surprised that he's allowed it.

LauraNorderr Sat 10-Sept-22 23:09:32

As a Conservative and a Monarchist I too find this idea wholly inappropriate.

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 23:12:26

I think it's inappropriate too.

Are they trying to economise or has Ms Truss muscled her way on to these Royal visits?

I’d rather abolish Liz Truss, personally.
The only comfort I gain is that King Charles is not going to be a pushover in those weekly audiences.
He may not be allowed to express an opinion, but those raised eyebrows can be very eloquent and leave Ms Truss in no doubt as to his sentiments.

Zonne Sat 10-Sept-22 23:46:02

I’m glad others agree.

I can’t work out how their advisers ever thought this was a good idea. I assume she’s hoping for some kind of reflected popularity, but I think that will backfire. And apart from the political element, smuts as if she thinks she’ll be some sort of comfort to Charles. But he is a 73 year old, who doesn’t, surely, need this kind of handholding.

Smuts = it seems. I have no idea why my auto-correct is so illiterate.

When I spoke to my nephew yesterday he said "Its a good day to bury bad news sor of day" and what are they trying to sneak past us while our eyes are off the ball?

Truss should be busy organizing the fuel crisis problem and not getting involved in a side show. Ok there are some ceremonial bits she had to be involved in but her job is to govern the country and not to junket around.

Absolutely spot on! There was a national crisis before all this happened and there still is, so she should not take her eye off the ball.

eazybee Sun 11-Sept-22 06:45:34

Of course the monarchy and the government should mix. Parliament will be in recess I believe during the official mourning period, presumably until the funeral, so what better to do than to tour the country and meet, and listen to, people.
Not junketing around, not touting for popularity, but work.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 11-Sept-22 06:56:30

Totally inappropriate.

Governing doesn’t and shouldn’t stop, Truss should be getting on with her job. The four countries have seen enough of her over the past months.

We need major decisions and action to deal with the price crises and coming recession.
We still have no idea of how the price cap is going to work, and whether she intends to tax the consumer or supplier.

rosie1959 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:12:46

Funny old world Boris was critacised for not being where he should be. Now in a time of National mourning the PM is attending services of relection across the four nations
This is very unfortunate timing at a time of economic crisis that is affecting the country but will these attendances stop her dealing with parliamentary matters probably not

BigBertha1 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:32:31

I think it's unusual but not inappropriate. I think we will a lot of new ways of doing things. Some will work some wont. At the moment everyone is trying to do their best.

Zoejory Sun 11-Sept-22 07:49:19

I'm sure she didn't ask to go. I'm no fan of the woman but do feel a bit of sympathy. Baptism by fire

GrannyGravy13 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:55:52

Ms.Truss is the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, why on earth would she not visit all parts of the Union with the new Monarch during the time of National Mourning?

Luckygirl3 Sun 11-Sept-22 08:22:49

What!? - just what!? Unbelievable poor judgement on behalf of the new king to agree to this. What a start to his tenure! It bodes ill for his judgement in the future.

The monarchy is supposed to be outside politics. Taking a party-aligned politician around with him and giving her exposure and a connection with the king is just basically and fundamentally wrong in every way.

Hopefully his advisors will have a word with him.

Giving Truss this exposure and approval via association is a threat to our democracy. I feel very angry about this. Surely someone will make sure he knows this is wrong and change his mind.
