Is this appropriate?

I think it makes him look political. I can see some of goodwill people seem to have for him leaching away as a consequence.

But I dislike both the monarchy and Truss, so recognise I’m a tad biased.

Ah I get it now DaisyAnne this is just another Tory bashing thread. If Starmer was PM would that be OK? They're just following protocol.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 11-Sept-22 10:36:20

Well said Maizie and DaisyAnne.

I think Truss is out of order. Having said that she will learn by being with him.

Learn how to act like an aggressive child?

What happened to maintaining dignity at all times, as the Queen did?

I think that a tiny incident is being grown out of all proportion here.

That table arrangement was very poorly thought out. Every single little detail should have been thought through and rehearsed, including the fact that it had to accommodate people signing from both sides of the table, to ensure the ceremony went without a hitch. Charles indicated that the inkwells and the tray of pens were in the way. What would you have liked him to do? Pick them up and pop them on the nearest windowsill? That would have really messed up the ceremony, wouldn't it?

Well said Maizie. There are far too many people who get their jollies pulling other people down for no good reason or even because they make up their own truths.

Sometimes I despair about the innate nastiness on here.

DaisyAnne Charles could have said no.

And you know that how?

You are making it all about you and how it suits you to see it. It would be equally possible to think the man has had a very sad, trying time and is very tired. Or do you expect people to be superhuman? Do you have no compassion?

There really are some horrible people in the world and I don't mean King Charles.

Farzanah Sun 11-Sept-22 10:22:44

Wrong on so many levels.

Aveline Sun 11-Sept-22 10:22:00

Zonne Sun 11-Sept-22 10:19:40

Interesting that some think there will be anti-govt demonstrations. I think the opposite; I think respect for the Queen will prevent that, thus making it appear that Truss is more popular than she is.

I would, incidentally, feel the same if the PM who was doing this was of any party.

I don't know who's idea this was. I suspect it wasn't Truss's. If it was Charles's idea I suppose no one is wanting to say no to him right now. Equally if it was a political suggestion he could have vetoed it as no one would want to disagree at present. He's looking old and distressed. It's a massive overwhelming time for him. I'm sure he's being listened to.

The article, which is all this thread is based on, says it was Truss's decision.

Fabulous, a great new beginning and bonding between political and monarchy. Really pleased they are doing this tour together

As above.

And it shows a certain 'thriftiness' regarding the security forces which is to be commended.

There shouldn't be any 'blending and bonding' between the political and the monarchy. The monarch is apolitical.

Attending memorial services would be fine. In fact, one would expect the leaders of all the political parties to be doing this. Anything more than that is unnecessary.

Charles is a highly experienced 73 year old, very well accustomed to carrying out royal duties. He certainly doesn't need anyone going along with him to hold his hand. What is more, he should be the focus of the tour, the PM is completely irrelevant in this context.

I would say that I'd like to know more detail about this proposal; it's very sketchy at the moment.

biglouis Truss should be busy organizing the fuel crisis problem and not getting involved in a side show. Ok there are some ceremonial bits she had to be involved in but her job is to govern the country and not to junket around.

Absolutely spot on! There was a national crisis before all this happened and there still is, so she should not take her eye off the ball.

I don't think the King will be junketing around, it's not a jolly.

However, I agree that she needs to be getting to grips with her own job. We've been long enough in limbo without a PM visibly in charge.

She shouldn't be traipsing around the country, she should be getting on with her job sorting all the things that are a problem at the moment.
Surely if Churchill went with the Queen it was because she was a very young woman, not really prepared for the role she was thrust into.
Charles has had many years to prepare and doesn't need Liz Truss to hold his hand. Oh, won't she enjoy the limelight while the country worries about the energy crisis etc?

henetha Sun 11-Sept-22 10:06:04

I've wondered that, snowberry. I worry about his health too
at times. And he does have a very red face sometimes.

CatsCatsCats Sun 11-Sept-22 10:04:45

It won't last long, this budding friendship, if there is one. Their views on the environment are too far apart.

snowberryZ Sun 11-Sept-22 10:03:05

Off topic a bit.
But does anybody ever look at King Charles and think
Rheumatoid Arthritis?
A family member had hands exactly like his and it was RA? It's very debilitating and painful during a flare.
Either that or he has some other auto immune condition.

If he has chronic health conditions he might have to share a lot of duties with Prince Willian going forward.

I am with you on this one Calendargirl

What would happen and all the protocols in the event of the late Queens death would have been decided on many years ago, whoever was/is the Prime Minister of the day.

The Queen will lay in state in Westminster Hall according to tradition, the heart of the U.K. government, isn’t that a symbol of the relationship between Government and The Crown?

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 11-Sept-22 09:59:12

Whatever I think about Truss and the appropriateness, she is the head of His Majesty’s government Luckygirl, appointed by his mother, and the colour of the PM’s politics is irrelevant to the monarchy.

Chestnut Sun 11-Sept-22 09:58:34

Ginny42 has said it well. There is a great deal of anger about the cost of living crisis and demonstrators will almost certainly appear if Truss is around. Do we really want the new King's tour sabotaged by angry people?

I’m in the minority obviously as I thought nothing wrong with Liz Truss accompanying Charles, especially as they are both new to their respective jobs.

I naively assumed it was a good chance for them to get to know each other at a very momentous and sad time,

I would have felt the same if it had been Keir Starmer.

Whether it is Truss or Keir Starmer they would have a job to do and should be getting on with it. Obviously, she is unaware of the difficulties we have in this country. First, she aspires to be Margaret Thatcher now who does she think she can be? She has an important bit of self-knowledge missing.

I am amused at the thought of Truss meeting Mark Drayford,
she called him ‘ a low energy version of Jeremy Corbyn’

Do you think he'll nod off while she's talking to him?
?

"Oh sorry! What was that you were saying? It can't have been that important."
