Is this appropriate?

I think it makes him look political. I can see some of goodwill people seem to have for him leaching away as a consequence.

But I dislike both the monarchy and Truss, so recognise I’m a tad biased.

I don't know how you think the whole thing works FarNorth but if she has said she wants to go I don't see how he can stop her.

Hopefully, others will intervene.

Completely inappropriate.

She is politicising the King's tour.

I'm really surprised that he's allowed it.

If he didn't want it, it wouldn't be happening.
She can't just tag along.

I'm not sure it makes him look political. I imagine he will be able to deal with that. The article says it is Liz Truss's choice. So, just when we think we have got rid of one, we get another "all about me" politician.

The main work of the Royals is to act as an ambassador for our country. Whilst they need to understand politics, the role is basically apolitical. I think Truss is out of order. Having said that she will learn by being with him.

(No doubt the Republicans would want us to vote for Ambassadors too.)

Well done Charles a new monarch and a new era he is our leader now let him lead and join with the government. Apparantley this is for the people so let him start the way he means to go on.

I am presuming a note of irony here!

One thing is certain. Whatever our new Prime Minister does or does not do, she will be heavily criticised.

I'm with Grany.

I am amused at the thought of Truss meeting Mark Drayford,
she called him ‘ a low energy version of Jeremy Corbyn’

Of course this has been planned and decided over many years. The King and the Prime Minister have different roles. I don't see how it "politicises" anything. They both represent the people of the UK and should be present at the ceremonies and/or services which will be taking place in different locations.

As they are both unelected heads of state, neither of them
" represent" the people.

I wasn't born when the Queen acceded the throne, but all my recollections in history books were of Churchill accompanying her pretty much everywhere at the time.

Ailidh Sun 11-Sept-22 09:06:59

I'm not old enough to remember when the Queen acceded to the throne, so I assumed that the visit to the four countries accompanied by the Prime Minister was just a ceremonial that was always done.

Joseanne Sun 11-Sept-22 09:02:34

I'm guessing this was all decided many moons ago, along with all the other meticulous planning. Its pointless saying it was Truss' idea. If it had been Cameron, May, Johnson or Corbyn at the time, the PM was going to be included whoever, whatever the timing. King Charles can hardly now say, "No, not that one thank you."

The trouble with the Telegraph links are you can’t read them unless you pay for them
But from the headlines alone it seems very strange indeed

This works.

Ginny42 Sun 11-Sept-22 08:46:23

I couldn't have expressed it better Luckygirl3.
I can also envisage a scenario in which many people who might want to wish the new king well setting out on his new life's journey, may also wish to demonstrate against Ms Truss and the effects the cost of living and energy prices are wreaking on their lives. There could be unpleasant consequences of this 'jolly'.

We have been without an effective PM for long enough now. Ms Truss should be at work with her colleagues in the Government, working hard to mitigate against the worst effects of the crisis we are in.

Zoejory Sun 11-Sept-22 08:42:44

Why take Starmer? Surely it's just the PM.

Luckygirl3 Sun 11-Sept-22 08:38:39

If he is actually going to do this, then he needs to take Starmer too. He needs to demonstrate political neutrality.

Truss will gain benefit from the goodwill and sympathy that people feel towards the bereaved king - it is utterly unacceptable.

Luckygirl3 Sun 11-Sept-22 08:22:49

What!? - just what!? Unbelievable poor judgement on behalf of the new king to agree to this. What a start to his tenure! It bodes ill for his judgement in the future.

The monarchy is supposed to be outside politics. Taking a party-aligned politician around with him and giving her exposure and a connection with the king is just basically and fundamentally wrong in every way.

Hopefully his advisors will have a word with him.

Giving Truss this exposure and approval via association is a threat to our democracy. I feel very angry about this. Surely someone will make sure he knows this is wrong and change his mind.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:55:52

Ms.Truss is the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, why on earth would she not visit all parts of the Union with the new Monarch during the time of National Mourning?

Zoejory Sun 11-Sept-22 07:49:19

I'm sure she didn't ask to go. I'm no fan of the woman but do feel a bit of sympathy. Baptism by fire

BigBertha1 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:32:31

I think it's unusual but not inappropriate. I think we will a lot of new ways of doing things. Some will work some wont. At the moment everyone is trying to do their best.

rosie1959 Sun 11-Sept-22 07:12:46

Funny old world Boris was critacised for not being where he should be. Now in a time of National mourning the PM is attending services of relection across the four nations
This is very unfortunate timing at a time of economic crisis that is affecting the country but will these attendances stop her dealing with parliamentary matters probably not

Whitewavemark2 Sun 11-Sept-22 06:56:30

Totally inappropriate.

Governing doesn’t and shouldn’t stop, Truss should be getting on with her job. The four countries have seen enough of her over the past months.

We need major decisions and action to deal with the price crises and coming recession.
We still have no idea of how the price cap is going to work, and whether she intends to tax the consumer or supplier.

eazybee Sun 11-Sept-22 06:45:34

Of course the monarchy and the government should mix. Parliament will be in recess I believe during the official mourning period, presumably until the funeral, so what better to do than to tour the country and meet, and listen to, people.
Not junketing around, not touting for popularity, but work.

Chestnut Sun 11-Sept-22 00:18:59

biglouis Truss should be busy organizing the fuel crisis problem and not getting involved in a side show. Ok there are some ceremonial bits she had to be involved in but her job is to govern the country and not to junket around.

Absolutely spot on! There was a national crisis before all this happened and there still is, so she should not take her eye off the ball.
