Just spoken to my NDN who is a sort of high-earner and asked him jokingly when he was going to contribute to the 'trickle-down'.

He made a gesture of one hand-giving and the other taking-back.

Apparently he'll use his tax cut to service the increase in his monthly mortgage...

I think Truss will have an easy ride next week compared to her return to parliament.

Whitewave I do wish that Sunak, Davis, Javid and Stride would not boycott the conference and do go in order to challenge her.
Althugh I suppose if Sunak did that, it would be put down as sour grapes by some.

I think it is organised in a way that doesn't allow people to do that - other than in interviews to the press.

I am unclear why an accent should make you unfit as an MP!

What accent does make you fit? Most MPs have an accent. It is all such ignorant nonsense, and sheer snobbery.

It's not how you speak, it's what you say that matters.

And no-one outside the UK would even know that she had a regional accent. We all sound the same to them...

When I worked in Norway, it took me years before I could distinguish one regional accent from another, though I was assured they were very different. But not to my foreign ears.

The only way I could detect where a person originated was by a particular phrase or word that would be used traditionally in one region but not another.

My parner who is Swedish though fluent in English has been here 40 years and can only now detect accents - sometimes.

I believe it's true - we do all sound the same to a foreign ear. No-one on the 'world stage' is going to say "Oh goodness, listen to her accent..."

If I recall correctly, the Tory party conference is scripted to within an inch of its life and there is no challenging or questions from the floor, so those 4 being there would require them to stand in the front row and clap enthusiastically. Much better not to be there at all and make their point that way.

Truss gives me the impression that she is not very bright and gets mixed up with facts, she can rehearse her lines but answering questions accurately is a challenge, Starmer is going to have fun at PMQ.

Yes, I watched HIGNFY last night, too, and forgot it was Economic History he has a PhD in. My memory could do with some re-education!
