Liz Truss has told King Charles not to go to the COP27 meeting next month

This is what I have just heard said on the BBC 9am news. And yes, they used the word 'told'.

It isn't on their website. It's considerably toned down on the Guardian website. The mirror is even stronger - 'Liz Truss orders King Charles not to attend COP27 climate summit."

What the hell is going on here?

mokryna Mon 03-Oct-22 13:09:14

Could the Prince of Wales take up the baton or he is under Truss’ orders also?

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 12:56:29

Shall I do my shouty bit again?

What if there is a national disaster and many people die? Does he have to ask Lizzie before he comments?

What if there is a fire at St Pauls, and it burns to the ground. Does he have to ask her if he can go to see the wreckage and speak to the firefighters??

So a person with 70+ years of experience has to ask an arriviste politician what she advises? We so need to get this sorted out...

Charles will always act on the 'advice' of his Ministers because he is a constitutional monarch. He may have things to say to Truss in private audience but that is as far as it goes.

The King has already said that he will no longer be able to get as involved with matters close to his heart as he used to, as king he’s not allowed to express opinions. Personally I hope he does continue with his environmental work and I’d like him to go to COP27. I feel it’s important for us to be represented by somebody who genuinely cares.

I'm going to shout again, apologies in advance.

THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD AND THE ENVIRONMENT IS NOT POLITICAL.

Absolutely Volver! How dare Truss dictate to him!

Applegran Mon 03-Oct-22 12:13:56

As a constitutional monarch he has to accept the advice of the PM - but she could celebrate his known commitment to the environment and encourage him to go! Thank you to the earlier poster who gave a link to an article about Liz Truss' belief system and copied this sentence:
Our destiny, according to this belief system, is to turn nature into money.
If this is what our Prime Minister believes - we have to despair or speak up - email our MPs at the very least. Charles is now unable to speak up as he used to - but we can.

They all put it differently: King Charles will not attend Cop27 as Liz Truss denies making order

Charles is sound. Truss is disgusting... nuf said

Alie2Oxon Mon 03-Oct-22 11:16:16

Actually, if it isn't too much of a digression, I'd like to comment that if I was the King, I would have had so much to deal with over the last few weeks that I wouldn't quite know which way was up!

Maybe shrewd Miss Truss caught him at a moment when he felt that going on a yet another trip, to Egypt, could be avoided? The pictures do look as if she's trying to sympathise? (I'm guessing here.)

MawtheMerrier Mon 03-Oct-22 10:44:09

I had hoped that Charles would not be a pushover (still think so) and that he would put Truss in her place - still hope so.

Alie2Oxon Mon 03-Oct-22 10:27:09

Yes, that one - thanks volver.

Could others on this world stage feel that the UK may be withdrawing its support at COP27...?

I will do the same as last year, and stick a noticeboard in the front garden with current info, pictures and comments!

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 09:37:28

This one?

Alie2Oxon Mon 03-Oct-22 09:29:58

To start today here - could someone find the picture from the Wikipedia of the play about King Charles, posted about earlier, and upload it here? Great illustration.

Global warming is a PLANETARY issue and not the business of political party in the world theatre.

The UK along with the EU and others has led the environmental agenda, while the big manufacturers have largely ignored the issue, China, USA, S Korea even Germany have been burning coal while we phased it out.

All we have achieved is to export the pollution caused by our own consumption.

Our consumption in the UK has not reduced, we still want ever more cars, electrical goods, clothes and cheap trash, produced overseas with poor regulation. We feel good that the UK will become carbon neutral soon while ignoring pollution caused by our demand for cheap goods.

Quote from the Queen's speech at COP26. Seems like Truss and the King don't agree with that.

"I for one, hope that this conference will be one of those rare occasions where everyone will have the chance to rise above the politics of the moment, and achieve true statesmanship."

EXACTLY!!

Katie59 Mon 03-Oct-22 07:32:27

King Charles must not get embroiled in political controversy
part of the Truss plan is to reduce the environmental regulations in several ways. The Kings views are well known, his best course is to say nothing because this could get political very quickly.
Truss is a walking catastrophe, her own MPs will probably clip her wings she could not have done worse in her first month.

Allsorts

It's quite wonderful how a few posters know the intimate working of the security services in this country.

????

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 07:16:33

They are backing down on the 45p tax rate cut. Maybe they'll back down on this too.

As they say where I come from, "bunch of chancers."

Whitewavemark2 Mon 03-Oct-22 07:15:03

The question you need to ask is, why did Truss not want the King to attend?

Allsorts Mon 03-Oct-22 07:13:25

He was advised not told. That is her job. He is King, he took advice. Very sensible.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 03-Oct-22 06:33:02

Queen acted as head of state as the King will, when he attends.

Truss is unconscionably stupid.

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 05:07:15

The Queen was due to attend the last one but couldn't go due to ill health. Her speech was recorded and played to the delegates.

Anybody complain then that she was being political?

nanna8 Mon 03-Oct-22 00:42:16

No ,he shouldn’t go. It would be seen as political whether or not it actually is. He needs to be very, very careful to preserve the monarchy and this would give many people mud to sling.
