Vandalism of the countryside

I am signed up to a range of conservation/wildlife organisations, all of them are protesting on this issue, its quite unusual for some of them to make a stance against the government in such an explicit way.

Guardian today (extracts)

“Conservationists and wildlife trusts etc are considered part of the “anti-growth coalition” by Truss.

Rare plants and animals are to lose their protection when Truss gets rid of the laws protecting their environment.

Species are at risk from the investment zones, when planning will be trashed, which means that their habitat will be destroyed by building.

Truss has given no assurance that national parks, sites of special scientific interest and nature reserves will receive protection.”

Everything it seems is up for sale to the global economy. Money, money, money

Supporters of the environmental groups are in excess of 10 million voters, and “it beggars belief that Truss has chosen to pick a fight with the public”

The RSPB have had a great response from their appeal to their supporters to contact their MP’s to voice their concerns. As Rory Stewart has said in his podcast, the Conservative Party is full of people who treasure the British countryside so I think Truss has shot herself in the foot yet again.

So what are people going to do? Truss can do a lot of damage in two years.

Good for them

The vast majority of people can see that trashing the environment in the name of growth is a bad thing. What sort of people are these Conservative MPs who want to frack, tear up the countryside and destroy habitat of endangered species?

Their greed must be all consuming. They just cannot hold dear the same kind of things that make living in Britain so wonderful for most of us.

Did anyone else watch years and years on BBC? She is Emma Thompsons character in it, isn't she?

A farming friend of mine has a planning application for a Solar Park the number of objections is just astounding, hundreds, some local most from hundreds of miles away, a few overseas.

So what are people going to do? Truss can do a lot of damage in two years.

Everything crossed that she will be stopped by her MPs. Gove is opposed as are a number of senior Tories.

The leafy shires simply won’t tolerate it.

C.P.R.E. are actively involved in this and other countryside erosions of course.

I live in Bucks and wherever I go in the county, habitat is disappearing. HS2 is ripping the countryside apart and towns are doubling in size. A small village near us has now 3000 new homes swallowed into part of a ribbon development on a new ring road around what used to be a beautiful market town. This is now a vast sprawl of identikit housing estates with few being social housing. I know the population is increasing but at this rate? I am puzzled. How can prime agricultural land be released for such developments?

I can see both sides of the argument here. I live in Kent, once known as the Garden of England. Unfortunately, for many years now, we have had massive housebuilding, motorways and high-speed railways all taking away our lovely countryside.
I do quite envy those of you who still live, and enjoy, counties that have Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, that will probably never see such development.
However, with continuing immigration, on a large scale, and young people trying to get on the housing ladder, where are they all going to live?

If Truss wants to change the agenda she needs a public mandate. Take it the electorate. I support the NT all way on this. Speaking as a member too.

I support any organisation[s] that want to stop desecration of the landscape. So many houses being built now [they're not cheap either] but no shops in these new areas [not everyone can go online] and a severe lack of doctors', dentists' surgeries. It's awful - as is LT!!! Telling the King what to do I think is shameful. I note that she was on the back row of representatives from other countries in a group photograph - usually the UK PM is on the front!!!!

It's not just desecration of the landscape, it's loss of habitats, trees, and endangering threatened species and biodiversity.

I know we need housing and business spaces, but planning offers some protection.
