Should the Coronation be “slimmed down”?

A year ago I would have said definitely we do not want a coronation for Charles anything like Elizabeth’s.
But looking at how uplifting for people across the nation Elizabeth’s funeral was - I’m starting to think differently. I wonder if actually the coronation might be an opportunity to celebrate what Britain does best, solidarity with the Commonwealth, diversity and whatnot.
I don’t know - just feeling it could be a chance for cheering us up - blending some amazing traditions which we only see once in a lifetime with a forward looking spirit - oh I don’t know.
I’d be very interested in what others think.

I think it's not about how much is spent or how much grandiosity is or isn't on show so much as understanding what the royal family actually represents and the beliefs and behaviours it perpetuates.

These people are in privileged positions today because in the past their ancestors used power to oppress others, were extremely callous and cruel and also stole wealth.. ie took things that didn't belong to them.

Obviously they are here now and it's no fault of their own at this point but purely an accident of birth. And as individuals I only wish them good health and much happiness but let them now step down from their ill gotten ivory towers and live lives like others.

I agree with this too.

I think the idea that the coronation will bring in money to the country is questionable. It would need careful costing by an independent agency. Personally I doubt if the overall benefit is that great and even if it is it, will it come back quickly enough to help us with the urgency needed? Plus the fact that such a display is a kind of insult to all those who will be in dire financial trouble this winter. That is NOW and if we are truly civilised we should prioritise looking after the needy. So I'm in favour of slimmed down - strikes a more suitable note.

I personally would do a way with it. We are not having an investiture for William as Prince of Wales.

We don't need a coronation. Charles was sworn in the day after as King in Buckingham grounds. There is no need for anything more.

With millions of people in fuel and food poverty the majority of us having to tighten up because of the cost of living, it isn't needed.

We do pageantry best, it brings in multi millions of pounds, and shows us at our best around the world. After the political twaddle recently, I think we need a good coronation, but whether small of large iveno idea.

Maybe the (slimmed down) Coronation could be in York Minster? Bringing levelling up income to the North.
At the same time King Charles could cancel the title of Duke of York from the records.

A coronation is the last thing we need. I get that the Queen needed a good sendoff after her lifetime on the throne, but why do we "need" a coronation? I agree Eurovision Song Contest could bring people together even more so. Do people want to spend spend money on tea towels and mugs? Alcohol and crisps? They get sold anyway. Do people really need an excuse to get trollied down the pub?

I do feel a bit pageantried-out right now. We had a ginormous jubilee week pageant, a ginormous funeral 10-day pageant and the thought of the same again at a coronation makes me want to go to bed. And would it even attract a load of tourists anyway or are they all pageantried-out too?

Bah Humbug!!!!
I took my grandson to Windsor for the day, we watched the changing of the guard from Windsor castle, there were lots of people from all over the world watching plus a lot of British people, spending their money on hotels, transport, souvenirs, food.
I would not like to see a slimmed down coronation, I believe it showcases what the british do best. It would be uplifting for our country.

As Phillipa111 states 'These people are in privileged positions today because in the past their ancestors used power to oppress others, were extremely callous and cruel and also stole wealth.. ie took things that didn't belong to them.'

This could be said of every country in the world, and looking back through history, cruelty and rich taking from poor or others, went right back to the birth of humans! We should be looking forward, and not dwelling on past cruelty for Britain.

The Royal Family may represent a bygone era but they do a lot of good and I want to keep them!!!

If you want to concern yourselves with callousness and cruelty, you should look at the slavery that STILL happens today in the world and not worry about history. We are happy to buy most of our goods from China, who have appalling record of cruelty.
I am sorry that my ancestors were cruel and callous...no excusing them..... but they were not alone...

Charles will want everything he believes is his due. He won’t be slimming down anything within his extravagant lifestyle.

Geordiegirl1 Tue 11-Oct-22 17:46:32

Agree completely.

Geordiegirl1 Tue 11-Oct-22 17:52:25

A very good point!

I'm a monarchist but I'm happy to have a less ostentatious coronation. A service lasting 4 or 5 hours is just too long. However, I was too small to properly remember the last coronation and didn't get to London to see the Queen lying in state. DH has suggested we go for the coronation and I'm really looking forward to it.

What all the folk who are against a coronation seem to forget is that there are monarchists in all strata of society, from the very rich to the very poor. Even those struggling to cope might like something cheerful to look forward to. And you miserable lot would do us all out of it!

Moreover, the slimming-down of the monarchy started in the last reign. There's no reason to suppose that it won't continue in this one.

So Saturday May 6th it is then. Sadly no bank holiday for the workers but no extra expenses for the employers.

Blinko Tue 11-Oct-22 18:20:23

DH thinks the coronation should be done via Zoom... He is not a monarchist, needless to say.

lemsip Tue 11-Oct-22 18:49:18

Ceremony at Westminster Abbey will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby
Service on Saturday May 6 next year will be eight months after accession of Charles III and the Queen's death
Palace says it will be 'rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry' but also 'reflect monarch's role today'
Charles III will be anointed with holy oil, receive the orb, coronation ring and sceptre and be crowned king .

also happens to be archie's 4th birthday

Geordiegirl1 Tue 11-Oct-22 19:37:04

Only to London.

Nanniejude Tue 11-Oct-22 19:38:07

I’m looking forward to a massive and lavish Coronation with all the pomp and pageantry that us Brits do best!
We haven’t had a coronation for 70 years, it brings pride and pleasure to lots of people. If you don’t like it, don’t watch.

Geordiegirl1 Tue 11-Oct-22 19:38:57

What benefit is this to the rest of the country? It’s London-centred.

The alternative being - conduct it on an open topped bus travelling the whole of the UK perhaps?

Neilspurgeon0 Tue 11-Oct-22 19:46:49

Well witzend can I say that the Duke of Norfolk (centuries of father to son apprenticeship) plus the magnificent Garrison Sergeant Major and his team were just left alone and, since at the time we didn’t really have a Government, they just got on and did it, impeccably. I think it just says so much about how little the idiots in Westminster actually matter to Great Britain

Oh an I hear their might have been a Festival of Brexit, but I for one never noticed it.

Slim or not, it will be magnificent - ‘cos we’re Brits

Harmonypuss Wed 12-Oct-22 00:51:16

They should cut it right back to the bare bones in my opinion

nanna8 Wed 12-Oct-22 01:07:11

Go for it, makes good tv viewing. Only happens very rarely after all. Think of it as a Hollywood spectacular.

vegansrock Wed 12-Oct-22 04:49:32

Ooh yes the Festival of Brexit. That brought in so much revenue didn’t it? Complete waste of taxpayers money.

Grany Wed 12-Oct-22 10:13:05

Why have a coronation?
