I was prepared to ignore the coronation, but for Charles to insist that his now wife be crowned is beyond the pale in my opinion.
I realise there are a huge number of royalists on Gransnet but do any of you agree with me that she should not be crowned?

Willowbreeze 59 I believe Diana will forever be the queen of decent people's hearts
The rest is egoism, pomp and entitlement

volver is correct, the British Isles includes Ireland. Geographical fact. Great Britain does not include Ireland, but British Isles does!

Elegran Sat 15-Oct-22 14:01:47

It is an island, and it is one of the islands that collectively are known as the British isles. Not the British Isles as a political name for a country, but the British isles as a description of where the whole group is situated, whatever their political affiliations.

Personally I have nothing against Camilla, and as she is the King's Wife then she should be crowned.
But!!! There is always a but!! I can also see why people think she shouldn't be. I know Diana and Charles were divorced, but Camilla and Charles were having an affair long before that, in fact before Charles and Diana married. The only reason he married Diana was to produce heirs to the throne. He didn't love her. Diana knew this soon after getting married. She was totally in love with Charles, and the whole threesome thing made her ill. That I believe was very wrong and I didn't support Charles and Camilla at all back then. I can also understand how it has affected Harry, as he is a very emotional person. William is a totally different character and coped better when Diana died and has accepted and moved on from the past. It has been 25 years since her death, and yes, move on, times change, but I for one will never forget Diana. She should have been our Queen.

Actually, after I posted, I thought of this...

Is it a misappropriation of the concept of Great Britain that makes somebody think that the island of Ireland isn't in the British Isles? Britain/Great Britain/British Isles even Pritanī if you like, as actual names for the geographic entities that make up bits of this archipelago we live on. But has there been a move towards having people think that "Britain" is somehow a superior nation that includes England and all it has "conquered"?

Just musing....

volver Sat 15-Oct-22 13:47:10

Oh FGS "faye17". I'm trying to be "nice" but the island of Ireland is in the British Isles, whether you like it or not.

And Britain ain't "Great", not from where I'm sitting.

faye17 Sat 15-Oct-22 13:43:50

Volver I think the people of the Republic of Ireland would very much beg to differ that the island of Ireland is a British isle geographically or otherwise.
At all events and before someone tells me to start another thread as this one is about the coronation of Camilla, I think she will be a most fitting queen for Charles in continuing the traditions of GREAT Britain

volver Sat 15-Oct-22 13:28:53

No, sorry faye17. The island of Ireland is just Ireland. It just sounded daft to me as I wrote it!

It's all geographical, none of it political.

The British Isles includes the island of Ireland. Geographically. Not politically.

faye17 Sat 15-Oct-22 13:24:27

By 'erm' do you mean Independent politically Volver?

faye17 Sat 15-Oct-22 13:20:49

Thankyou Elegran, very informative post

Anniebach

Shock, horror, she had sex before marriage, unlike Diana who
for some reason knew she had to keep herself tidy, wonder why

I wouldn’t like anyone to speak about my family like this.

faye17

If its geographical why does it not include the island of Ireland?

Because Ireland is....erm.... Ireland. ?

Volver....
Would it not be about what made it GREAT in the first place

Great Britain was first called Great, or Big, Britain to distinguish it from little Brittany, which was, and still is, Bretagne in French, and spoke Breton, (which is actually an Insular Celtic language, meaning it originated in the British Isles and is related to Welsh and Cornish and more distantly to Manx, Scottish and Irish Gaelic. It was taken over to what is now France by Britons who migrated to the area in the Middle Ages.)

Is there anyway that the Queen Consort can be side stepped to takeover as PM?

She would be 100% more effective than the present one.

I believe the rôle of PM could be better filled by one of the corgis right now.

Photos of the late Queens corgis being cuddled and playing with Sarah Ferguson are all over Twitter this morning.

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 12:49:31

Great Britain is a geographical term. It means great, as volver says meaning big or bigger. It includes England, Scotland, and Wales (the UK is those three plus Northetn Ireland.) Even if Scotland or Wales were to become independent, the description Great Britain would still apply. The countries are England, Scotland, and Wales as said before, and can be independent of each other politically but the geographical term still applies.

'fraid not faye17.

Its great as opposed to lesser. Not great as in "wonderful".

Look at the name in other languages ...

Grande Bretagne; Grossbritannien; etc. (All Big Britain)

GREAT Britain is just a description of how big it is compared to lesser Britain.

It's about size. And as we all know, size doesn't matter, it's what you do with it that counts. wink

faye17 Sat 15-Oct-22 11:31:04

Crown Camilla GREAT Britain deserves no less

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 10:55:03

Haha, but there is a problem. There’s controversy over which posh hat she should wear
grin

volver Sat 15-Oct-22 10:48:30

??

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 10:40:16

Or as volver would say, let her wear the posh hat, just like him.
