dont want to pick you up overmuch as you are so to the point and great humour but there's a young policeman who comes to our Quakers sometimes and this just isn't true.

People of any background chose to lie through their teeth if they can get away with it. Crimes to people and theft and drugs offences all backgrounds.

I was a working class kid who loved the planet. I worked part time in Woolworths and in a pub in the evening to get through college but I also went on marches, did leaflet drops, collected signatures for petitions and protested for CND, Compassion in World Farming and other causes dear to my heart.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

It's weird that the threads about going into a supermarket clad in your pjs stirs up more angst.

You are quite right Galaxy. The charge can be the same but the outcome very different. Well put.

I have no idea of their class, I am guessing people are making assumptions based on accents. I was responding to the idea of class having no impact. Criminal convictions and the consequences of them are impacted by peoples class. As does the money available for legal support, the financial situation if you lose your job etc. People cant not know this surely.

In all seriousness MaizieD Heinz tomato soup with some toast is a good lunch for someone in my factory and well, when people queue up for tinned food at our town food bank they'd be happy with Heinz - I'm a bit upset it is wasted on a painting. Though we all know Vincent Van Gough was impoverished and mentally unwell anyway

The consequences would be very different depending on income/class as with many things in life, we can pretend that's not true if we want but it's not accurate. I dont know what I think about this form of protest to be honest, I am not especially outraged but I am not going to pretend that consequences of behaviour arent impacted by class/income.
Sometimes the middle class cheer on behaviour that has absolutely terrible consequences for those not so privileged.

As for the consequences being different if the protestors were black/poor/whatever....well how different could the consequences be? The protesters have been stopped, charged and appeared in court yesterday. The same would have happened to whoever made the protest.

We seem to tell ourselves stories around these actions: -
The people were middle class
The police didn't act
The protestors don't know what they want

It's not true. Why do we do this when the facts are readily available?

Why do we seek to put down young people who want to make change? Young people who tell us (as we ourselves know) that conventional ways of making change don't work? You can write to your MP until you're blue in the face, but if they don't reply, then what??? Imagine you're young, your whole life ahead of you, you read about animal cruelty, about 70% of all animal life being lost since the 1970s, you wonder what life will be like for you when you are 60....what do you do?

What would you have them do?
