Sunflowers painting targeted by activists.

“Just stop oil” activists throw tomato soup at Sunflowers painting. Then glue themselves to the wall. I despair. How on earth is this going to change anyone’s mind about the use of oil and it’s by-products? Just yet another mess for some body else to clean up. Plus possible damage to an irreplaceable work of art. Yes, there’s a few versions of Sunflowers but all are precious. And yes, it’s protected by glass, but there could still be seepage between the frame and the glass.

the charge often isn't the same though
poorer people get charged with crime more quickly because they admit to them and have no representation and no money
and middle class children have back up straight away and often don't get as far as being charged

"poorer people get charged with crime more quickly because they admit to them" ?

dont want to pick you up overmuch as you are so to the point and great humour but there's a young policeman who comes to our Quakers sometimes and this just isn't true.

People of any background chose to lie through their teeth if they can get away with it. Crimes to people and theft and drugs offences all backgrounds.

its true about the limitations of legal aid etc of course!

I knew a small number of Quakers involved and found this on a website, I dont necessity agree/disagree btw but its interesting.

Jane it was indeed Heinz soup.
It’s a pity that it wasn’t Campbell’s, for a Warhol / Pollock mash-up.

Heinz tomato soup with a toasted cheese sandwich is absolutely lush.
I won’t be able to stop thinking about that now ?
We’ve had a lot of soup related stuff recently…

I was a working class kid who loved the planet. I worked part time in Woolworths and in a pub in the evening to get through college but I also went on marches, did leaflet drops, collected signatures for petitions and protested for CND, Compassion in World Farming and other causes dear to my heart.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

yes, you are right. I remember all my amnesty international posters. I wish I'd have kept them

I thought it was a deliberate confusion to make me think!

Strange, isn’t it when we have a situation where Police can’t remove protesters from our roads yet are very physical when it comes to removing Hong Kong protesters from the railings of the Beijing Consulate.

volver Mon 17-Oct-22 09:05:29

The police, was it?

Think you’ve got that wrong.

The Police rescued him from the grounds of the Chinese Consulate. Men had emerged from the Consulate nd dragged him in to assault him there.

I suppose they thought nobody would be able to come into Chinese grounds.

I await a protest by the Chinese eEmbassy for violating Consulate rules. Perhaps it’s already on the Home Secretary’s desk.

I've just had a two week long bout of covid and have lived on Heinz tomato soup and cheese sandwiches. Food of the gods!

As that painting is one of the true joys of my life if I had been near them I would have attacked them with a vigour that only an eighty one year old can supply. I would have been happy to stand in court on whatever charge they might bring.

RichmondPark1 Mon 17-Oct-22 15:57:53

Lovetopaint037 If the sunflower paintings bring you joy I wonder if you've heard of the immersive Van Gogh exhibition? I saw it recently and it was breathtaking. vangoghexpo.com/

Personally i would put the lot of them in the stocks

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 17-Oct-22 16:25:17

Yes, lovetopaint, as I said earlier in this thread, magnificent paintings bring me- and you- much ( free) joy. That is their true value, not their cost.

Well, worry not. The painting has not been harmed.

No I wouldn’t Grannypiper. I think the time has come to leave them stuck to the wall. Supply them with water, but protect them from public attack or support. If they’re making a meaningful protest, we should leave them there doing it. Presumably they’ve made provision to unbind themselves, so let them do it, on video.

I'd rather have a climate that supports life, than all the works of art in the world

The painting was not harmed but the cause got publicity, which is what it was all about.

This is very interesting Wyllow
I found one of the comments particularly accurate as far as I'm concerned.
Thank you for the link.

That’s true. But, having said that, going back to pre history people have felt the need to creat art so it is an important part of what makes humans human.

Caleo Sun 23-Oct-22 11:02:52

That is true, Maybe. However creative people will create anew, but nature: when it's gone it's gone.
