So is Hunt the Prime minister in all but name?

It seems that he is Truss’s watchdog, or the CEO as a Tory described him. He will almost certainly become he main spokesperson, given Truss’s abysmal performance.

But it is clear that the Tories are completely split, and one wonders if they can ever form a United party.

The issue with Hunt imo is that he is closely associated with austerity - close to Cameron. Very distrusted by the doctors and nurses.

There is now a suggestion that there will be an increase in cost cutting, but Just how much more austerity is the country willing to accept. Their reputation for good economic management is completely blown.

The last period 2010 -2015 appeared to have achieved nothing except to put enormous pressure on the NHS, and forced so many cuts on LAs and public services etc.

I suspect that Truss turned to Hunt because of his rhetoric when running for party leadership, which if you look at it is very Truss in tone.

It isn’t going to work and that will become obvious very quickly indeed.

Truss will go and Sunak will be crowned.

Thanks Dickens. That’s what I read on another forum but I couldn’t share it as I wasn’t sure where it had come from. I did think though that it was that hilarious Muppet Show clip that I’ve just seen on Facebook ( I’ll see if I can share it). At least it would be hilarious if so many people weren’t suffering from this governments ineptitude #youhavetolaughoryoudcry

Saw a headline on Facebook that Murdoch ( the true ruler of the country) is saying there has to be an election. If so it’s a done deal. But I can’t find it in the paper…DH is just looking for it now.

I’ve just, by accident, listened to an interview with Alastair Campbell on utube called Alastair Campbell in conversation. Policy, the people and the press 21/5/2013 at The British Library. It was fascinating because it was pre blogging and twitter etc. But in it he says that Murdoch only came out in support of Labour because he knew they were going to win.

Jeremy Hunt is to deliver part of his medium term fiscal plan today apparently. The chaos continues.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 17-Oct-22 06:56:59

They are hoping to satisfy the markets.

Who is in charge here? The British government or are we to do what the markets want?

What level of austerity is he trying to force on us this time?

rosie1959 Mon 17-Oct-22 06:59:22

Wasn’t it a quote by Mrs Thatcher you can’t buck the markets

She would say that though given her beliefs in laissez faire. Didn’t work then, ended up with 3 million unemployed, whole swathes of industries collapsing and empty high streets.
Has failed spectacularly now with Truss Laissez faire that has just again ruined our economy, and reputation.

Exactly how are Truss and the rest of the government going to get behind him? They have no authority, zero credibility.

It’s been reported that the markets have eased this morning and the cost of borrowing on the open market has already come down,

My take on that is that the money people are happy with Jeremy Hunt.

The question now is

Is the voter happy with Hunt’s policies?

That is something that only a GE can show, not sure there will be an early one,

Let’s face it the chance of a general election is slim to nothing so one way or another they are going to have to sort it out.
Will probably get rid of Truss and put Sunak or Wallace in her place
Suspect Sunak is thinking told you so

Hunt was disastrous as Health Minister

Stephen Fry throws his weight behind campaign to prevent deaths from outsourcing of NHS services

Stephen Fry and a group of other celebrities have joined a campaign asking NHS leaders to act to prevent deaths as a result of outsourcing of health services.

The group has written an open letter to NHS chairs following a new study published in The Lancet which links NHS privatisation to 557 deaths. The study suggests the deaths may be a result of “a decline in the quality of health-care services” when run by for-profit private companies, as compared to when those services are run directly by the NHS.

Personally I think they should have left well alone until the General Election, but I feel Rishi was being too ambitious, he wanted to be Prime Minister!

DaisyAnne Mon 17-Oct-22 12:13:40

Do you mean you would be happy for this government to have ended up costing us even more than they already have Gwenisgreat1? That would run the economy into the ground. Or have I misread what you are saying?

The Tory members & Mp's followed Boris's plea to back Truss, instead of realising he wanted someone worse than him in the job. So instead of asking why, they followed like sheep and did his bidding.
Now Truss has realised she's out of her depth so asked one of her rival's friends to help her out. Which actually does the opposite of what she wanted.

He ran down the NHS - now he can run down the whole country!

Indeed!

I posted a link detailing his record with the NHS yesterday. Here it is again (can't possibly precis it because there's too much detail). It's a long read but worth it

I think he now has his eye on austerity; which will finish us off...

Dillonsgranma Mon 17-Oct-22 12:30:21

Bring back Boris. He got us through the Covid crisis and I reckon he could get us through this mess up as well

Scottiebear Mon 17-Oct-22 12:31:45

I foresee Truss going and being replaced by Sunak. He was Hunt's choice, so hopefully it would bring some harmony to the chaos.

I know it’s long but I think everyone needs to read this! In fact it should be printed on the front page of every newspaper (as if!)

'Boris' landed us in this mess by appointing a cabinet full of incompetents and far right free market loons. He's better off where he is, lying to US audiences about how wonderful he is...

Has anyone heard anything from her in the last few days?

And maybe this is a side effect of being old, but I echo what I read somewhere else - I feel strangely concerned about her parents watching all of this...

Theoddbird Mon 17-Oct-22 12:49:48

Armchair politicians....rife on here. If any of you were in charge the country would be on its knees...hahaha. I actually like Hunt. He is what I would call 'a sensible chap'. I was impressed with his interview with Laura Kuenssberg yesterday.

Jess20 Mon 17-Oct-22 13:03:03

Wasn't Hunt the health minister who oversaw the demise of a safe and effective health service? Historically low funding, closures, missed targets....dismantling the NHS, selling off land, growing delipidation, the junior doctors strike and so on. Private companies stepping in to make up shortfall, creaming off the profitable bits... cutting training places and GP budgets and selling bits off to big business? Is anyone going to trust this man? The co author of 'Direct Democracy' which aims to allow private companies right into the NHS.... Oh yes, a safe pair of hands!

Anneeba Mon 17-Oct-22 13:09:48

Lucca, James Naughtie was spot on. Hunt will continue to destroy the NHS along with all the other state funded entities in our country. Horrendous.
